Cat owners, dew chime in

So, kitty has quite the little problem. From the looks, he lost his dew claw - though not quite certain honestly....could be a cut. Not sure what happened, possibly a cat fight, the hedges, who knows.
Maybe cat owners can chirp in.

Seems the method of treatment, as it's a common injury if the dew claw, is to clean it in salt water (did that) and I've cleaned it with polysporin. I'm a bit clawed to piss from that, but will keep an eye on it.

I'm not qite ready to run to the vet and the goal is to watch it, keep it free of infection. I'm not insenstive to him but he doesnt seem to be in pain and lets me wash it and not gunning to spend $$500 for what may be a home solution.

Insights?

Happened to one of mine a couple of years ago.
I kept mine indoors, popped in a local pet shop for advice, i have asked my local pet shop loads of things and they are very good for advice.

They suggested this, should be something similar in Canada.
It has a little nozzle on it and you just squeeze the bottle so the powder goes onto the affected area.

Just keep an eye on it and if gets no better after a few days, then a trip to the vets may be the thing to do.

Cats are generally good in looking after themselves, would keep indoors though as they go all over outside and may pick up an infection.

Poor baby. (The kitty, not you. :D ) You seem to be on the right track with him, just watch for infection - puffiness, white puss, fever, lethargy, that type thing. Antibiotic on it a couple times a day. And if he will recoup inside till it begins to heal all the better. Hope he's all better soon.

Now that it's cleaned, looks like maybe a bite.
We've stray cats around (well, likely owned, too well groomed, so outdoor cats), I've seen him chase squirrels and disembowel mice, and he's stupid enough to go after the trash pandas.

It's raw and he won't let me bandage it, but aside from soaking it it warm salt water, he's been really good for allowing me to slather polysporin on it generously.

He's eating, playful, active and walks fine on it.

Looks a bit better than before, you're right, it does look suspiciously like a bite of some sort.

Wish the little fella a speedy recovery

So, just a follow-up. What looked fine, turned for the worse; he got blistered, they broke, oodles of blood....fun times.

He went into the vet this morning. The vet said my methods were fine in principle - the salt water soaking and cleaning and the polysporin, but unfortunately, being a bite, once the wound had sealed, I was really only essentially applying topical solutions that couldn't reach what was below the surface..nasty bacteria associated with bites which was ascessed and infected. (not sure what it was, but she says squirrel bite a possible culprit).

So they had to cut his paw open, drain it, glue him back up and he's on slow release antibiotcs and wearing a lovely satellite dish which he's not fond of. But he is/was rightly high from the anaethesia and his pain killers. :p

So, not a whole bunch of fun (but alas, a whole bunch of monies) but he's on the road to recovery and should bounce back just fine. :)

I live with 6 cats presently.

Cat bites are one of the worst things going - cats have very dirty mouths full of bacteria and any time they get a bit on something that punctures the skin it's almost a guaranteed infection (that includes humans!). Chances are your kitty got in a fight/argument, probably with a stray that's more aggressive, tried to run and got bit on the retreat. My advice on this is vet every time. I've left it a few times and it's always resulted in the situation getting worse and having to go to the vet anyway. The ear bite was the worst - left it overnight and in the morning the whole ear had ruptured and there was blood everywhere! The vets will almost certainly be pretty rough to get back into the wound and clean it and in the UK will usually give an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic.

Hope kitty's feeling better soon!

Would have been best to take to the vet.

I also guess it depends on how much one really does love their pet/friend/companion maybe ?

I have 2 ragdoll cats, 1 is near 9 yrs old, female, been desexed, other is female and is 8 months and 9 days old, not fixed desexed yet.
8 month old girl, she was showing signs of straining, weeing in her tray, taking extremely lengthy times, I suspected she may have a bladder infection or similar issues
took her to the Vet, the consultation fee was $65 in the end costed $100 total, she is on medication and now improving too.

This was just prior my birthday as well, money went on her vet bill instead of me, which was what I opted for and decided on, as we are very strapped financially.

I absolutely love her, and my other cat... and even though it costed $100 it was far worth it knowing she is feeling better, improving and not in pain.
Bladder Infections hurt like hell in females, humans and animals, burns like mad and for long time after when weeing.

Our pet friends cannot tell us in our language what is wrong and how much it may hurt and so on and rely upon us heavily... never hesitate or wait to take your pet friend to a vet if they are sick/hurt injured.

Open cat wounds can lead too blood infections very fast and cause death.

Meh forget the neighbour, love thee pet ! <-- some random shit cause I can :p

I am glad that you got it sorted and kitty is on the mend. Bites can be awful. We came across a stray cat years ago that was in a cat fight and had an infected wound (it was very bad with maggots on it and everything). We took the stray to the vet and he had to put the poor cat to sleep because it was far too late for help. The vet said that cat fights can be quite vicious and a lot of damage can be done even if the wounds are small. It was a very sad situation.

I guess I fall at the extreme end of the spectrum, but my opinion would be that if you get a pet it's your responsibility. I've been fairly lucky in life that I've never suffered significantly from fiscal instrument rarity. I've had good times and bad and the bad have been tight, but I've never had debt collectors at the door or anything like that. Even during the bad times though, when something's happened I've spent more than I could afford to ensure my animals got the help they needed. They're my responsibility and if it came down to it I'd ensure they ate before I did. The people in this thread seem to be of around the same perspective.

It never ceases to disappoint me how callously many will treat animals. The reason I've got 6 cats isn't choice on my part, it's been finding abandoned cats living stray and in real trouble. I often wonder who were the owners that could have cast my best friends aside so easily.....

Nice response.

Yes it is very hard breaking and unfortunately a common problem massive huge problem cats and dogs tossed away.

It happens alot too when a cat or dog, but will reference as a cat here, misbehaves, example used to use the litter tray and all off a sudden starts weeing on floor, furniture, your bed, clothes etc.
This is a huge factor for when the cat is tossed out and away.

Problem is people are not educated being a pet owner and or do not want to know why all of a sudden this is happening.
And people do not realize your pet is trying to tell you something...

Your neglecting me.. like alot of different ways 1 could be I am mid sized kitten and I still want to play but your not playing with me much anymore...
You have a new appliance in your home, it's freaking me out... it actually happens and can cause the cat stress..
You moved house, someone moved in or away

Alot of different reasons, something has changed..

My 8month old she went into heat cycle, it was horrific for her, and I felt so damn cruel in not letting her out too mate.
We wanted to breed her as she is a beautiful pure bred, but looks like we are going to have to pay another huge amount and have her fixed up next week instead.
Money we just do not have to be honest to spare at this point in time but are going to have to skip something and get it done, as it is better for her and us too!!!
As she will enter another heat cycle every 2-3 weeks each heat wave last around 7-10 days... just not a good idea to put her through it again.

Over the last 4 years I've been down this road. One of our cats has a kidney problem that gives him a sore stomach a lot of the time. And when combined with real anxiety issues - he's gone through long periods where he'd piss on any piece of clothing left on the floor. Curtains, rugs, towels, cloths, cat beds - everything got a hosing at one time or another. I now give him saline injections twice a day to help keep him hydrated and stop the sore stomach and I give him a Zylkene (75mg) tablet twice a day. He's terrible at taking pills so I get a little bit of a cat pate (just the tip of a teaspoon) and break the tablet open and mix it through. I then have to force his mouth and smear it on the roof of his mouth so he can't spit it out. This makes a HUGE difference to his anxiety. It's been a long road to getting to this point. When he was first diagnosed we were basically told that he would slowly starve himself to death over the course of several years and we'd eventually have to get him put down. Now he's putting on weight at a significant rate and has actually increased beyond the weight he was when we got him. He's now a friendly happy beast who only pees in the littler tray.

It takes time, but there's lots of ways to understand what your cat is telling you.

Had this with another girl - we were considering breeding her, but ultimately we couldn't live with the heat cycles. I think kitty will thank you for getting her cut in the long run.

Wow that is incredible.
So glad he is improving and gaining weight and using his Tray!! that is brilliant you were looking after him like that as well :)

And yes we really did want to breed my ragdoll, she would be a great mother cat and would produce amazing kittens. With great personalities for sure!!
However, we are severely over crowded here, with 4 kids, 2 adults, 2 cats, 3 gold fish and 1 leatherback lizard soon to be 2... house is just far to small for us, with very limited room in any of the rooms yet alone walking from
one room to the next lol.

It just is Not ideal to try and allow her to get through the heat cycles until it is time to breed her. And not to mention in how damn cruel it seems to leave the cat like that for almost 2 weeks I just
cannot stand it for her. Breaks my heart.
She her name is Cassino (heheh) is booked in actually for tomorrow (Tuesday) for her desexing. I am some what down about it, as I really did want to Breed her, but on the other hand
feel relived because it is better for her and us anyway. Going to miss her like mad tomorrow, as she is purely 24/7 in door, like me for different reasons, so will be waiting anxiously for her to come home.
Cassino cannot have anything to eat past 10pm, so will feed her at 9pm and my other girl and then wash the bowls and put them away until she is back later in the afternoon next day.

gosh, she loves her food, she won't be impressed lol.

Oh and your boy with the kidney issues, I presume you do not feed him any dry cat biscuits ?

That is a busy house! I understand what you mean about missing them. Working from home I really value having my herd trotting in and out all them time. Keeps me company.

As to our kidney boy's diet (named Caliban for any Shakespeare fans) - there are special diets specifically for his condition. Essentially his body doesn't process protein very well causing damage to his kidneys. As such the diet's low in protein which doesn't make it taste very good. Alongside this a biproduct of the kidney disorder is a reduced sense of smell and taste. And this is where the difficulty lies - he has a sore belly a lot of the time and food that's unappetising, so quite often just won't eat. After discussion with our vet we decided to just give him whatever he would eat, the kidney damage is less threatening to his well being than the malnutrition from starving himself. However, after a couple of years we've now got him to the point where he'll actually eat the kidney food so things are starting to look far better for him

Aww that is Great News, because 4 years of pain and agony for him is a long long time. he is improving so that is awesome :)

My Cassi (Cassino) is due to come home in another 2 hours... been waiting all day, she went to the vet at 8:45 am this morning, and she can be picked up at 3:45pm.
She was spayed today cannot wait until she is home with me. I called the vet earlier, everything went well and she was recovering. Poor Cassino she is going to be starving, no food since 9-10pm lastnight
and this morning she was wondering why I did not feed her and harassed me for hours :(

At least she will be home soon and she will Not have to be put through those horrid heat cycles anymore!

My Cassino, has recovered nicely after her surgery, and she is all back to normal now :)
Except maybe a little extra lippy and bossy so it seems lol.
