I see more and more casino races of different types coming up.

Just to pick a few casinos which offer "races" based on wagering or amount of spins

- 32red / Roxy Palace
- betsafe
- Energy Casino
- Tivoli
- Videoslots
- SlottyVegas
- Unibet (rarely)
- Trada (rarely)
- Sportingbet (used to in January, stopped again)

Is this what will eventually replace deposit bonuses? Do you like race-type promotions more than traditional deposit match-bonuses or free spins based on deposits?

I'm kind of in between. I like both depending on what bet sizes I intend to play. If I low-roll I like races, if I medium-/high roll I prefer bonuses.

What do you guys think?

I don't compete in casinos races or contests based on most amount spun - they're fine for those with the bankrolls, good runners and people don't mind the game restrictions.

I prefer to pick my slots on whim. Give me a dep match anyday and let me choose my own games.

To be totally honest I have NEVER liked race and wagering type promotions.

I feel that they are low roller unfriendly and those with a large gaming budget will always out do the 'small fish' such as myself.

I recall one at 32 Red a couple of years or so back, work was good at the time so my budget was a lot bigger and IIRC I deposited almost every day, completing 1,000's of spins and still ended up near last with a Race payout of around £2.

Much prefer a deposit match and/or FS, I play for entertainment and a 'boredom buster' so the longer the play time the better, regardless of whether I clear WR or not :)

It is yet another strategy to retain players!!! And a clever one at that as it calls on the player's competitive instinct

You are more likely to go back and try to improve your ranking as most races are minimum 1 week up to 1 month.

With a deposit match you deposit, lose or win and move on to the next casino offering a decent match bonus.

Personally i take a race when i want to play without a bonus but so far have done it only at VS, 32RED and Slotty.

Couldn't give a flying monkey's about participating in lopsided races, but I don't mind if I am indirectly involved in one, say at VS or something.

I look for extended playtime because it is an expensive hobby, so I will always prefer bonuses, plus I would make larger bets with bonuses than with straight cash.

But perhaps leaderboard races will overtake traditional bonuses in time. A lot of casinos seem to be fond of them, wheras I am not. And I absolutely detest prize- based promos too, absolutely zero chance for low rollers to win anything

I had something similar years back, was like 3AUD when it was credited to my account. Thought then i would need like 1Mio to deposit to get to the top spot. :D

Although in the last 2 races at 32RED i chose the right team and had 180 and 41AUD credited to my account for my wagering. Didn't do extra deposits, was just the usual 200 on Friday for the 100% DOTD. However, never made it even close to get through the WR for those 2, so it was only good for some extra playtime.

I don't think that most of the races are low-roller unfriendly. On the contrary I think some are actually more in favor of the low-rollers. For instance the VS or the Energy Casino race you get more points if you just stick to your €0.20 bets instead of medium-high roll. VS gives you 5 points for €1 wagering, if you wager 1€ in one spin you only get 2 points.

The casinos benefit most if the players on the top are spinning like crazy in order to get the biggest piece of the cake.

If I look at the developments in the recent past more and more casinos come up with that. Most recently the exclusive CM promotion of Energy Casino.

Fair point and agreed!

I spotted the Energy CM promo thread and actually said out loud to myself, 'Now that is fair and well drafted!'

One small problem I have possibly 1000+ various casino accounts and Energy is not one of them :p

Wife is a member but decided not to register for now to avoid any 'one per' type rules :)

races are good for loyalty while bonuses award all players that are willing to have a portfolio of casinos. Out of casinos perspective races are a no brainer.

I don't much like them because you always have some totally committed obsessive people who spin like crazy and make it impossible for more "normal" people to get anywhere near the top

Videoslots weekly races are ok because I always get a prize w/o trying , mostly from playing the battles

Yet another race - Tivoli jumping on the race wagon

So many races now, i am all out of breath from all that competitive "running" (spinning) :D

I really like the races at Slotty and Videoslots but don't even bother trying to win, although by nature I am a competitive person :)

Was quite addicted to the Casumo Challenges last year, actually had to set a deposit limit because of them at one time :o Don't get involved with them now though :)

All said I much prefer races and cashback to bonuses, no rules can be broken and you can cash out when you want -what's not to like :)

Cheers mate! Got the same e-mail. As you've mentioned it's a player-retention strategy.

At Videoslots it's measurable how successful this strategy is. Half a year ago we had ~1500 players receiving prize money and the last player had around 400 spins.
Last week the 1500th had 1535 spins, the 2497th had 438 spins. They have huuuuuge success. Seems like all the others are jumping on the race wagon indeed.

What really sucks is that card/table game players don't get rewarded at most places at all.

Yep, VS increased tremendously the pot and amount of players receiving some dosh.

When i registered in Feb 2015 the pot was $10.000/week and the first 750 or 800 (IIRC) got a price. Now it is $35.000/week (that is some serious cash) and up to 2497th. I ended at the very low end last week and still got 7 bucks!!! Enough for 45mins DOA and i did not even play minimum bets, all between 0.27 - 0.54$ :D

Wow, firstly, that's very impressive. So you largely credit the increase in players to these races? That's an incredible spike in half a year just from one player-retaining strategy. Were there not other campaigns, promotions, etc. also happening during that time? I'm a big stickler for causation versus correlation.

In my view the race at Videoslots is only part of a very smart overall strategy.

You have:

- Monday - Race Winnings credited
- Tuesday - Free Spins on different slots
- Friday - Weekly Cashback credited
- Daily - Free/Opt-in Battles on a variety of slots where you can win FS/cash

and also

- enormous amount of available games
- super fast payments
- great customer support
- unique control features for Responsible Gambling (like max bet or deposit limit)

The whole strategy is orientated on maximizing the "player retention" rate.

A new player who deposits once to receive the SUB and then moves on to the next casino is not profitable at all.

That's right, and I guess we'd both go so far as to say it's the overall customer experience that ultimately wins player loyalty/ retention

I play at Casumo every weekend depositing 100 or 200 Euros
Really like their challenges when they have them.
Allows me to win some spins etc when i get some good playtime.
Won 5 super spins which was 3 Euros at press and won 138 Euros from them.
Playthru was massive and i got up to 700 but with the way WR was i cleared it with about 10 left. haha
Still i had a free arvo play on my fav Novamatic games.

But i don't chase wins etc by extra deposits with them
It is what it is!

Oh, I still play at Casumo and think the super spins are fab :)

What I meant was I don't chase the challenge any more.
