I am planning on writing a tutorial at some stage to assist casino affiliates that are only starting out to have a proper strategy or plan that they can use. I think we are all fully aware how easy it is to have an affiliate site that makes no money for years.

What would you suggest should be part of such a tutorial?

It is a good read, agreed. It touches the core of the role an affiliate should play. I was thinking of a tutorial that are a bit more comprehensive, something in the line with the following:

  1. Getting started
  2. Hosting issues
  3. Web design platforms
  4. Getting templates
  5. Getting content
  6. On-line marketing
  7. Choosing affiliate programs
  8. Topics to avoid
  9. Updating your site
  10. etc...

Something you can print and then follow for a successful site. Although it can not guarantee success it can at least help you to take some "learn the hard way" schooling steps out of the process.

Sounds like a great project!

Perhaps a section on off-line marketing...viral marketing as well.

Getting traffic might need its own section as well.

In terms of point 7 above, I would also like to ask if it is possible to have a list of the Affiliate programs here so we can discuss any issues related to them as well?

I think this is great idea.

MY suggestion would be to stay away from discussing specific programs for the beginners. You might overwhelm them with info about the specific programs.

Maybe the discussion about specific programs should be saved for the advanced...
Just a suggestion.

1/ Domain name
Choosing the right domain name: how to balance between SEO and brand issues.
Expired domains, domain auctions, etc...

3/ Design
Differentiate yourself creating a brand through a proper domain name and stunning design. Learn something about tipography, it's VERY important:

2/ Online marketing: SEO, SEO, SEO (skills are required, no money, it's quiet important when you start a new business), PPC, video promotion, Stumble Upon and the social bookmarking stuff.

3/ FREE GAMES: I'm conviced that affiliates should include much more free flash games in their websites as it's a fantastic promotion material specific to "our industry".

4/ Less banners (or even 0 banner !), more text links, at least we should have learned that from Adsenses/Adwords a long time ago: people are getting blind to banners and it's more obvious when you vist a casino guide.

I could give you a perfect example I you'd ask for :D

PS

So many more things are coming to my mind like interface design, landing pages, persuasive design, etc...
I wrote an article in french about this but 90% of the sources are in english, maybe you could get benefit from reading them:

The next step for me would be to define the structure of the tutorial.
The idea is to publish an article here that consist out of a step for step tutorial on how to get started as an affiliate in the best possible manner.

I have 2 options in constructing the tutorial.
  1. Planning your online business
  2. Designing your website
  3. Acquisitions
  4. Conversions
  5. Retention

The other way to go about it is to construct it in a points manner instead of the above mentioned main headers.
  1. Getting started
  2. Hosting issues
  3. Domain names and branding
  4. Web design platforms
  5. Design issues
  6. Getting templates
  7. Getting content
  8. On-line marketing
  9. Choosing affiliate programs
  10. Topics to avoid
  11. Updating your site
  12. Use of advertising material

Which of these 2 methods would be most functional in your opinions? Also should I write all of it and publish it one shot?

Come on Chatmaster, if you want more insights from us you have to...gimme some more. :D

Your 2nd option looks like subcategories of the 1st option main categories more than a real different onthology.
I see were you're going but it's still an "bauche".

Alexandre - I just wanted to say - your site is well designed, very friendly and WELL LAID OUT.

I truly enjoyed visiting your site.

Except for the Online Casinos Page where you have left the:

"EN Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Sed non risus. Suspendisse lectus tortor, dignissim sit amet, adipiscing nec, ultricies sed, dolor. Cras elementum ultrices diam. Maecenas ligula massa, varius a, semper congue, euismod non, mi. Proin porttitor, orci nec nonummy molestie, enim blablabla"

In the Bubble.

And the Blog - you need to enter info on the blog - it's not live yet - I was really looking forward to reading it... LOL!

Anyhow - Congrats on the REALLY BEAUTIFUL and well done site.

Hi WagerWitcth,

Thank you very much for your compliments.
We've worked so hard on this portal but it's still not 100% live.
Texts in latin will soon be remplaced.
We also have to integrate more games and casinos.
The blog should be live in a few days.
I will write an article about the portal's development process but we are planing to post a video with interviews of designers, developers, CSS integrators, etc...
You should register if you want to see more features.
And if you want to write a review, you just have to login and choose the page you want to edit.
We will organise a contest soon.

Alexandre -- I think that's great!

Let me know about your contest - PM me or something - I'll promote it on WW.

Also - have you checked out the TOOLBAR as a possible means of advertising for your visitors?

I have one and personally I think it's way cool (I could be biased here... LOL!)

I can give you the address to download mine to check it out - then if you like it you could either pass it around or you can talk to me.

I THINK that this TOOLBAR is an excellent tool - and as you'll notice - I put on it links to CasinoMeister and GoneGambling - So I think it could also be a VIABLE tool to use for promoting other places, casinos, etc.

I think you could PROMO a Casino a Day on it - etc.

Just bear with me - try it out - No Spyware, etc. OK

And then tell me what you think - and if it has applications for us as Webmasters...

I think it does - in fact I will post a post about it. AGAIN --- LOL!

It is FREE to download - FREE to USE - and FREE to MAKE YOUR OWN.

Here's my link - you can at least see what the bar looks like and if you are interested.

You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

I don't get any commission or ANYTHING for people making their own toolbars from my site that I know of --- so the only incentive that I have for telling you about it is to pass on what I think is a cool thing... I did make another post on it... Sigh.... I'm nuts about the ToolBar. LOL!
I really think we can all use these to promote ourselves and our casinos and sites that we visit.

Kudos to everyone who has either written some docs on this subject/topics or is looking at pushing something out.

For those of you who have been around for years then I'm sure you can relate to this:
https://www.casinomeister.com/forums/threads/the-hours-ive-put-in-so-far.30527/

There are so many things to learn, let alone transposing these skills into making a living or at least some income to begin with. I think I know most things these days but connecting the dots is sometime a lot different to knowing what's going on.

Giving an example...

Everyone knows that if you have a broken internal link then visitors/SE bots are going to get a 404 error. However how many people use a custom 404 page?

It was not until Yahoo began looking for error pages, that is sending a requests for page rfndfnerhhnzas356743er2gv.html to test how your domain handles a 404 error. That I realised I should add a custom 404 error page.

Since doing this...some of my URL's where using other pages that I'd forgotten about and changed or removed are now getting the custom 404 error page and in turn I'm getting more traffic throughout my sites.

It's common sense stuff like this, that I think we all know but for some reason don't act on it.

Anyway, I too could write a book on newbie101 aff stuff...But it's finding the time to do it...

Cheers
T

Another thing that I think is important is to update your new site everyday, if possible, something that I didn't do when I first started. It took me over a year to get one real player. I think updating has a positive effect on pagerank and search engine position, but who the hell really knows about search engines. Lately, I try not to think too much about them and just focus on content.
