Australians spend more money on gambling than on gas and electricity bills, phone bills and petrol, according to economists.

Analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data by CommSec found the average Australian household spent $2292 on gambling in the last year compared with $1830 on gas and electricity bills, $2056 on petrol and $1996 on telephone and internet bills.

Craig James, chief economist at CommSec called the figures "staggering".

"The money spent on gambling far exceeds the total outlays on electricity and gas bills," he said. "And only until recently outlays on gambling exceeded that of electricity, gas and water bills combined."

CommSecs analysis also found that Australians pay a relatively low amount for water, with the average household spending $634 per year on water bills.

Thats less than they spend on perfumes and cosmetics, beer and wine, stereos, TVs and DVDs.

The modest amount spent by the average household on water &sewerage services seems out of kilter with the relative scarcity of water, Mr James said.

With population expected to continue rising at a solid clip in coming years, it is likely that the cost of water will have to rise substantially to ensure that pricing reflects its relative scarcity.

Households will also see utility bills rise by 14-15 percent over the coming year due to the largest increase in pricing for 26 years.

According to CommSecs analysis, that means households will need to find an additional $1830 to pay electricity, gas and fuel bills and $634 to pay water bills

Australians will still continue to gambling, we love it. We would bet on 2 flies crawling up a wall. With so many pokies around, Melbourne cup and our love of sports people will continue to gamble. It's part of the culture.

Yup lol.

Awhile back on this forum we had a friendly debate over a quoted 1% figure for "problem gamblers".

I was arguing that 1% was laughable. I feel it's safe to say I win that argument (for Australians, anyway).

I did my Ass today on the Derby, I had Hot Danish . I got a tip on it and the thing is still bloody running.

We cant go past Bart Cummings though, he's the god of the stables at the moment.

I see Zipping is out of the cup but Viewed is in, thats worth a bet.

What companies do you guys bet on for the Aussie races???

Mostly with the TAB online or over the phone, live video of the racing, mystery bets, cash withdrawals at a TAB venue. I also sometimes bet with IASbet (min deposit of $10) and Betfair. I have account with a few other places but hardly ever use them.

In the Cup i'm going with Zavite, Leica Ding and Cat's Fun.
