Any U.S. citizens living in another country?

I'm an American citizen living in Canada, and I have to pay Canadian income tax on my earnings already. I recently found out that the USA is probably the only country in the world that requires its citizens to pay United States income tax even if they're living in another country. :eek2:

Seems insane to me, but I'm wondering if anyone else is in a similar situation, and how you handle it? Like for instance, lottery and gambling wins are tax free in Canada - but if I win a big fat jackpot or something on the Canadian lottery, could I be required to pay US income tax on it?

Does anyone know? If you don't want to post in public view, send me a PM, thanks!

US citizens are required to file - no matter where you live or how long you've lived outside of the States.

Many countries have treaties with the US to avoid double taxation, and if you are paying income tax in Canada, you should be eligible for foreign tax credit.

Simply put, if you are a bonafide resident of Canada (the IRS has a checklist for you to figure that out) and you pay taxes there, you should be good to go. You just have to submit these forms yearly. Pub 54 has all the info you need. You can download it at the
