Any other windows 8 users suffering random freezes / crashes?.

I've noticed several cases of this highly annoying aspect when googling it. It is completely random, no BSOD, no crash dumps relating to it, it is not a hardware problem, I have done tests on all my hardware using dos bootable discs where applicable and software when not. All hardware is perfect and drivers upto date, BIOS / windows update is also upto date, this really has left me scratching my head and any possible cures will be greatly appreciated.

Windows 8 is excellent no doubting that, but imho it has been hurriedly released and not subjected to anywhere near the time it should have undergone in Beta testing.

I've had it 2 months and don't like it. it's really designed for touchscreens. A tip is to get your desktop button at the top of the stack top left so it will be your default app. Like you (I guess) I have it in constant desktop mode, and have moved all the apps to the start menu. On occasion yes, it does freeze. I open my e-mail page, and the mouse changes to hand when I hover over a link to open a mail, and it won't click, it just acts like the cursor is on the link. I then have to shut and reopen IE or sometimes restart it. I have removed all the bloatware. Make sure you choose the 32 BIT Internet Explorer NOT the 64-bit as this will not work with some add-ons like Norton Antivirus. Also you cannot use the older IE's with the win8, has to be IE10.
It took a week of on/off messing around, but I have now got it running OK and functioning like my older win7 Premium. Still get a rare freeze on IE but am happy now. Would recommend people stick with win7 wherever possible, unless you are having win8 on a tablet.

Did you forget.

MS Windows

Good,
Crap,
Good,
Crap .......

Should have stuck with Windows 7

Vista had problems when it launched, and it took over a year for Microsoft to sort out enough of the problems to make it useable such that whatever worked on XP would work on Vista.

Windows 8 may be a good OS in 2014 or 2015, but only if you have a machine capable of supporting it's tablet like abilities, or would prefer a tablet based OS across all your devices.

Not me - I bought by latest new PC just as Windows 8 was being rolled out, and Windows 7 still available.

Buying at this stage also offers the option of a very cheap migration to Windows 8 for around £11.

I have no idea what BSOD is, but yes, we are having a lot of problems with ie8 at the moment.
It's generally OK on my laptop, running Windows XP, but on my wife's with Windows7 it keeps going wrong:
Most commonly it comes up with a "Explorer has stopped working and is being re-started" message. but other problems include not being able to open or run flash on certain sites which work perfectly well on Chrome or FireFox.
IMHO there is definitely something gone wrong with ie8

{edit} Oooops! I somehow read the thread as "Exprorer 8", not "Windows 8"! :p

I have windows 8 nowq, wanted to keep ujp with the new generation.

I had no idea what it was all about Still dont. However I have been able to download and play
at the casinos , can use Google chrome, check my cc etc basic use

I tried to use explorer, said to upgrade to the new exploer(9 I think) and was told not compatible with Windows 8 LOL

I dont know what all those apps icon are all about My granddaughter presses all of them I dont know how to turn them
off so they sre not running in the background when I stsrt up since I think it slows up the the puter.
Still learning little by little No crashes as yet
Nice thing so far is that was able to totally reset my computer to the point as if I just bought it that day

right now I wish I had bought the windows 7 but I am sure 8 will be ok since Microsoft would not send billuons on it

One question to you sir I have a laptop but I use a mouse. How does one turn off or "disable"the touch pad one normally
use instead of a mouse? Thanks

There are several ways of disabling touchpad's Stove - An F key, a separate button, through device manager, BIOS, freeware, hope this helps :).

Right, open control panel and 'mouse and pointers' - I'm glad you mentioned this, as I had aggro with the touch pad, as when the cursor went too near the edges it kept dragging those stupid bloody menus out from the left and above, or returning me to apps screen when on desktop. You can disable the touchpad and individually disable the touchpad actions like the 'pinch' or two-finger scroll which I found annoying.
Depending on your PC manufacturer, the touchpad will have a different name, usually 'Synaptics pointing device'. If it doesn't have individual boxes to click to disable each function, then it will have a setting to disable it totally, although it may re appear when restarting your PC.

When the bugs are ironed out it will be outrageously good imho, if the crashes were a single application problem it would be easy to solve, I have now tried every maybe cause solution out there.

I get mesmerized every day at some of the wallpapers, not had a real chance yet to give my set-up a thorough test regarding the hardware, Mass Effect2 on full HQ GFX card settings is about the sternest test it's had, the graphics are mind blowing. Took this picture on my phone.......

You tit lol, BSOD - Blue Screen Of Death, IE8 has it's own debugging tool iirc, I don't use IE - ever.

I don't know why you kids need to keep changing operating systems anyway. In my day we didn't even have operating systems. When you wanted to boot your computer you used your foot. They had absolutely no memory in them. If you wanted to store information in them you had to write it down in a little book and jam it through a vent hole. We didn't have your fancy 3D video games. We played Pac Man with punch cards. And if we couldn't find the right card to stick in we'd punch each other for being too slow. We had one tiny little speaker in the front the size of a postage stamp and all it could do is beep. And it beeped the same no matter what you did so we never knew what the hell was going on. Our monitors came in two colours. Yellow or green. If you wanted 16 million colours on your screen you had to sneeze on it and even that only lasted until it dried. We didn't have touch screens. We grew up being told if you sat close enough to a screen to touch it your eyes would fall out and if they didn't your mother would smack you in the back of the head and shake them loose for not listening. In fact we never had BSODs all we ever had was BSTCs. Being Smacked 'cause you're Too Close. And we didn't have fancy splash screens and windows icons. We stared at 20 minutes of gibberish scrolling up the screen while it booted until it finally stopped and there was nothing left but a single cursor blinking at you on a blank screen. And then no matter what you typed it just gave you some BS about the syntax being wrong until you snapped and pushed the monitor off the table.

Actually, I just woke up so you should probably disregard this entire post.

Sorry, i can't help you either.

In Nov., I noticed Win8 PCs popping up 'on sale' at all the online stores. I went into a panic. LOL I was so desperate to avoid Win8, I was staying up til midnight and getting up in the wee hours every day during the holidays in my search for a desktop with specs i wanted at a reasonable price that had Win7. LOL

Hey 7th! why not install windows 7 instead? you should have a valid copy still?
If it's purely for gaming, i still recommend XP:)

You can save you W8-license for later, when they have implemented service pack x.

Of course you can try to fix it, but you know it might be practically unsolvable for non-dev's
Anyway good luck with it.. it suck's when shiny new hardware and software doesn't run the way it should!

THANKS I tried an "F" key and the touch pad is disabled for now

So if I am the airport how do I "enable" it back since it hard using a mouse sitting on the airport floor

Thanks a lot again Whew was a PIA as my hand kept touching the pad and closing my app

Do you have an SDd drive?

Googling 'windows 8 freezes' and I'm seeing a hell of a lot of threads about it.

I do have a SSd and checked the drivers on it which are basic windows drivers, you could be onto something here Mousey, just shows how thorough these driver updating programs are .

 That is DEFINITELY the funniest thing I have read this year - especially the bit I bolded!

I think i've nailed it, Firefox / flash / run as administrator, could be the cause, but I have loads of Mozilla crash dump files and will do some homework on the crash report reader app later. I didn't think of FF being the cause as it's not an app based freeze / crash, but a system related one, causing flash / FF to conflict due to some setting not configured correctly (I hope lol).

Anyhow, thanks for the replies guys, especially skiny's lol, nothing like some much needed humor when trawling through 100,000,000's of possible cures, when windows bugs out .
