Anti-smoking commercials in the US

These anti-smoking commercials that we are getting here in the US now are pretty grafic but this latest one is just so wrong in so many ways.

In case you haven't seen it, it's a woman who has had a stroke, caused by smoking, who is now bedridden. She talks about not being able to take care of herself and there is a male person there giving her a bed bath. This person is her son. Her teenage son bathing her leg and up.

Now come on, they have shown us amputees, people showing you what they have to do getting dressing in the morning, and people that have lost the ability to talk and have to use a machine. All this is not pleasant but this latest one is not right on so many levels.

If having your legs, toes, arms, voice box etc removed has not caused you to quit smoking then nothing will and this latest commercial is just bad.

I agree . I thought the commercial with the son bathing the "young" mom a little on the "off" side. If she were maybe 90 or something, it might be a little more palatable...but as young as she is...it is not quite good at all.

I also believe if one is going to quit, they will. If not, these commercials won't do anything but make them dig their heels in even more. I know, because I smoked for many years and all the harping my children and family did went into and out the other side of my deaf ear. It kept me smoking for a long time..the harrassment, just for spite I guess.

I quit because I CHOSE to, after decades of smoking. My husband still smokes though. I make him smoke in another room (He refuses to smoke outside because he says it's his house too and he pays half the mortgage) which he does have a point, sad to say, so we compromised.

I will say one thing about those that are against smoking and demand others to stay out of thier space if smoking...YOU ARE IN DENIAL! Give smokers a break, they have feelings and are real people too!

Do you drive through the soot, fogged, fumes, and brackish air tunnels when traveling? (Look at the ceiling of the tunnel and see how black they are?)
Do you drive behind deisel trucks, cars etc angry that the black exhaust is filling your car up while you breathe deeply from anger?
Do you have a fireplace and use it? Love the fire (there is some smoke that does enter your home at any given time when lit)
Do you cook on a grill outdoors? (Ahh the sweet smell (you breathing in deeply here not to miss a whiff) of the burning (SMOKING) grill)
Do you live near the forests where acres of trees burn every year?

So why must a smoker that smokes one small cigarette have to stand alone and be the enemy? If you do any of the above..one cigarette is NOT going to kill you cause our air quality already is...any one of these items is already killing you!

I thought that drinking alcohol would leave you more susceptible to having a stroke:confused: that is if you drink it excessively as what was shown a few years ago here in the UK in an advertisement.

But sure if anything was really good for you, everyone who took it would live forever, so in all aspects, nothing is really good for you, even fresh air, yes there are supplements you can take to make you 'feel better' (though give me a great run on the slots/VP would make me feel good for days and days:p) but the point being nothing makes you live forvever, when it's your time, it's your time....

Example.....there are many who have walked out of accidents that should have made them perish...they lived...what is meant to be, is meant to be, is the way I look at life, sorry if I offended anyone:o

and in the mean time the lungs of the world are black from the pollution companies left, and are leaving, behind in their quest for oil..
which is also a huge cause of the increase of cancer (and other diseases) worldwide - be it car pollution and destruction of rainforests.

With this I would have to very very strongly disagree with you, as my aunt died from cancer, who barely traveled, she never was on holiday, never smoked or drank alcohol, she died from cancer, yet my father has smoked from the age of 7, yes you read correctly, 7 years old, he is 69, now tell me, is it something to do with the food we are consuming that causes cancer or is the main cause of cancer smoking or whatever, look very deeply into researching these things, look up contrails left by airplanes as a start, and the sweetener aspartame which an independent test research team carried out on rats for the recommended dosage per mass, that malignant tumors where found on these rats after consuming the very sweetener that is put into candy and diluting juices and chewing gum...granted everyone is not the same and alot of us will form some sort of resistance to this sweetener.

The destruction of the rainforests however is man made....do you know that trees take in co2 during the day...likely....but do you know that trees take in oxygen at night and give out co2 because they have no sunlight at night to complete the photosynthesis process, Co2 is a part of this world.Yes we do need these vital instruments but it's plankton in the sea which gives us the majority of the air we breathe. Note:I still do not condone the destruction of the rainforests.

Sorry for the derail, but I wished to make some conclusive points in response to Selenico

damn you respond fast, cause I changed post within the first minute of posting it... I wanted to post the link to the youtube video without attaching the actual video, cause that stuff is too depressing to be confronted with directly, so I ended up removing it in total.
but.. where did I say smoking is the main cause of cancer and other diseases? I was talking about the pollution of the planet being a bigger problem than people ruining their own health with smoking.. And yeah there are many other reasons, like for instance processed (unnatural) food.
and the final part I find very strange... did I read it correctly and you mean to say trees hurt the environment?
and yeah the destruction of the rainforest is man made - who else monkeys? - beef, lumbering, gold and cocaine are the main reason for this...

I just wanted to point out that fact first and foremost as the initial thread was about smoking advertisements, I'm sorry if I misconstrued your post (I'm a little tipsy tonight, but you changed the topic of the original poster). I did not say that trees 'hurt' the enviroment, (the environment is "ever" changing, if you look clearly at what is going on with the planet), I merely stated that trees(and other green plant life) give out carbon dioxide at night and take in oxygen (at night) do not be so quick to jump to the conclusion that the trees give us our right to breathe as plankton in the SEA give us our oxygen(90% in fact), but what is the point in bringing this to light, even now, the people with the power will blame the common man or woman for the destruction of the planet...eg, it's your fault, pay carbon tax for C02 emissions, Smoking will kill you, swine flu vaccines don't create narcolepsy etc ect ect

I turn off the radio and TV when the harping of hospitals that specialize in cancer is constantly played.

It's 24/365...constant.

I am a smoker and drinker, driver and player (slots that is :) )

I am so fed up with this. I am worried about my health but I do not want to be in a bidding war for my body, so to speak.

The smoking in Sweden is going down, but not because they are showing a lot of videos of sick people. They are actually not showing anything of that kind here.
The only thing is the text on every package that says that smoking is dangerous for me and everyone else around me.

It's going down because people see smoking different now. They know it's dangerous wich they didn't when i was a kid.
It's a lot of information and talking about it, and it's forbidden in a lot of places. That's it.

I still smoke but if I quit it will be because I want to, not because anyone tells me it's not good for me.
I do have to stop smoking...soon:o

Me too! I think even if I wasn't a smoker, I would flip the channel. I am pretty sure most, if not all smokers know what it does to our bodies.

My son switched to an e-cig over a year ago and has stuck with it. I bought one in Feb. when I broke my leg. I smoke outside and not in the house or cars. I couldn't get outside so I that is why I got it. I still smoke most of the time and use it in situations where I can't smoke.

I have come along way in cutting down. In 1998, I was smoking close to 3 packs a day. Now, it 10-15 cigs a day. I doubt if I will ever quit! I still enjoy it too much!

Smoke'm if ya got'em!

Wow I really commend you for going from 3 packs to 1/2 a pack! So you ladies have inspired me-I went out first thing this morning on my way to work and bought my first electronic cig called NJoy.

Now let's hope it doesn't explode on me LOL:p

Please let me know what you think about them.
I always plan to buy and try them out, but for some reason I always forget :o

I agree! Those commercials are very graphic! I suppose they are making a point however. I've never actually watched one completely....thank God for DVR and the fact that I can fast forward them. They definetely have a certain shock value but I already knew all that stuff without the horrific commercials! I wish that watching that commercial would be enough to help me quit.

Yep, but over 14 years...lol! I don't know anything about NJoy brand. Ours are called tec-e-cig. They are pretty decent, but, I like my smokes too much. I know my sons' has not exploded on him ..... yet!

chain smoker here

we have tons of graphic anti-smoking adverts over our way too and if your saw the pictures and wording on our packs of smokes well....:barf:

In saying that, when you'll addicted to something, its not easy to kick:eek2: My whole family are smokers. My best friends are smokers. Why do we do it? Habit. Simple as that. I'm seriously evil, when I'm outta of smokes. I scare myself. Turn into a totally nasty bi@#ch

Expensive habit, unhealthy habit - yet a physical addiction which is probably one of the hardest in the world to kick. We all have kids that are asthmatic as and we know dam well that it was our habit that caused them to be that way but we just cant help ourselves.

I nursed my mother to the day she died (lung cancer from smoking) yet it STILL hasn't put me or any of my family off the smoking habit.

Im not strong enough to give up smoking, but I will make sure my kids don't pick up my nasty habits. And they are probably the biggest anti smoker crusaders out there - hehehe and Im glad of it :)

Great!

Don't know why I waited so long. I highly recommend that you give them a try. Was very pleasantly surprised at how satisfying they are. Just think about how much money it will save:thumbsup:

I was totally the same way (a BITCH!!!!) without my smokes, back when I was working and couldn't smoke on the job! It's like your brain freezes and you can't function or do ANYTHING until you have a smoke!! Once you do, you can go back to work and be a perfectly normal human being! Now, I am retired and go outside to smoke (ANY TIME I WANT!!!!!) I haven't smoked in the house or car for about 15 years.

As for the kids, my oldest was the absolute worst about griping and bitching at me for smoking! Guess what, he came home from college smoking. Now, he is the one using the e-cig, so, he only smoked for about 10 years or so. I have smoked for about 40 years. Minus 2 times I quit, once for 1 1/2 years amd once for almost 2.

I know, it will kill me someday........but, if I quit, my family will kill me now! (for being a BITCH!!)
