I've been going to the library a lot lately. I'm a big mystery fan, and last week I went in and found they had a bunch of Rex Stout/ Nero Wolfe books - I read most of them when I was a kid, but I thought I'd check them out again.
Rex Stout was writing back in the 30s and 40s so a lot of the language is a little dated, like Archie calls women "doll" or "sister" lol.
So in this one particular book (Too Many Cooks) the setting is this fancy hotel/spa and most of the servants are black. I was cringing all the way through whenever someone used the N word.... But then, right at the end of the second to last chapter - once the murderer is caught and the male and female characters (he's a cop and he mistakenly arrested her father and she didn't want to forgive him) finally are together on a train and Archie makes him spill gingerale on her to 'break the ice' and you just know they're going to live happily ever after
I almost choked on my coffee when I read this:

Seriously....I'm sorry but that totally cracks me up. (snicker)
