This is in no way any criticism of the forum or the forum rules.
We have the freedom of expression here, within certain rules.

At Casinomeister, we recognize freedom of expression as the foundation of any good forum; language can be a powerful tool. But with great power comes great responsibility (sound familiar?). We welcome opinions from every viewpoint and encourage debate, but we draw the line at flaming or being troll-like

Due to recent arguments, there's one specific line of argumentation I would like to bring to attention and that is "You have the right to your opinion, I guess.
When someone says you're entitled/have the right to your opinion, it can simply be a statement, but it may also infer other meanings depending on the context.

But when someone says "You have a right to your opinion, I guess, to me that infers something completely different if the poster is a native english speaker. A reference to the freedom of speech with an added question mark. I do not appreciate that.
There are many ways in which comments can border the line to f x flaming or being troll-like, but this is one I don't find acceptable.

Now I got that out of my system. What do you think fellow members? :)

I must admit that I did not see any point in your post. But it's probably me who's a little dumb today

I can sort of see what the OP's talking about, but I think it's just semantics. Personally, if someone says to me, "Well, you have the right to your opinion..." I can sense the "...even though it's completely stupid." tacked on to the end whether they add "I guess" or not.

But that's just me. :p

I strongly doubt that you're dumb any day :) Or was there something else inferrered there too. ;)
You know, I may be reading in things that aren't there, with reference to my post. I manage english pretty well, but I also lack "sociolinguistic skills", basically I can sometimes misinterpret some phrases. That's the reason why I explicitly asked for feedback.
Thanks for yours

Possibly it's not just lack of some linguistic skills, it can also be "career damage" on my part, since I've done a lot of text analysis in my life.
Thanks for your feedback

I did understand your post, and what you meant. But as I said, did not see any points.

but it is probably because I see the "I guess" expression as a bad habit. I can not see it as a question mark. Just something people add automatically when they disagree or feel insecure :)

When people say "well..I guess I`m wrong". They really mean "go f**k yourself, no way I`m wrong". :p

 Ok, I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here.
I will not refrain from my opinion just yet, but I'm well on the way ;)
Guess i was overanalyzing it and being a bit too emotional about it.
"You have the right to your opionion, I guess" is simply one of the countless ways you can tell someone you don't agree and/or think they're stupid without being explicitly flaming.
I can live with that. :D

This is a topic I have encountered b4.
The right to freedom of speech.

The problem is that speech can be harmful.
Slander is a step away from spitting in someones face or slapping them.
It's abuse alright. And it should not be viewed any differently to physical abuse.

;)
Rights go hand in hand with responsibility.

Sure, we can say whatever we like....but we have to then take responsibility for whatever happens as a result. We also have to accept that there may be others who don't agree and these people will challenge our views and expect us to back up our words with some kind of evidence etc - lest our opinion be considered less credible.

It's a bit like saying "casino x is rigged"...which is fine, as everyone is entitled to their view. However, if one cannot provide any kind of proof to back up that opinion, then one should expect to have their opinion considered less credible by those who have evidence to the contrary. Imagine saying to someone in a group setting "you're an a-hole", and when challenged as to why you hold that view you reply "because I just do". You've had your say, but you've probably just lost a lot of credibility in the eyes of many in that group.

@slotaddict....I'm not sure if u were trying to be funny but I thought your remarks towards Emme were ill-considered.

I am not backing up people who come in with unsubstantiated claims against casinos.
But you could submit as much proof or evidence as you want and doesn't change whether something is true or not. Nor does it mean that something is more likely to be truer if it is backed by evidence.

So what is the use of proof or evidence?

I say we start a wide open sub-forum called My Opinion where those that feel the need can flame, slander, shill, say you're quitting the forum or say anything else - regardless of value (kinda like a spam folder :p). And then limit the other forums to past experiences and helpful advise regarding the actual topic of the thread.

Wow - imagine bringing this opinion up in any sort of arbitration.

Speaking personally, and in a forum context, I'm much more likely to give credibility to a courteous, logical poster who is prepared to substantiate his or her views than one who simply rants on a topic and then gets ratty when challenged to explain the basis and evidence for his or her opinion.

It's easy to accuse; harder to actually argue a point - but much more effective.

+1 to that! I'd also add that simply disappearing from the discussion in which they are challenged only to reappear at some later date in other thread doing basically the same thing is another tactic worthy scorn and derision. I think there was a special corner of Hell for sniveling trolls wasn't there? ;)

Well, for me, a person should be responsible to any thing he/she says. The mouth is a very powerful tool. So if you are going to say something else, guess you have to stand on it and be responsible. We have a freedom, but it should come along with great responsibility as well. :)

It's another case of abiding by the LETTER of the rules, but not the "spirit". Words can be VERY powerful, and a comment can be cleverly constructed that can break the rules of civility, yet be perfectly within the rules as written. It's a case of an "advantage orator" in the same way that we have "advantage players".

UK MP's have many parlimentary rules, one of which is that they cannot call another MP a "liar". They use terms like "has mislead the house" to achieve the same ends, but within the rules.

Adding the "I guess" achieves the same thing, by turning a simple statement of a forum rule into a somewhat sarcastic expression of ".. but not in your case"

Em let me tell you what I've learned here the past couple of years. You can say just about anything you want as long as you don't attack the 'person' or call the 'person' a name. You may attack their behavior and call it any name you like. Stick to their behavior and you'll be just fine. Do not let anything anyone says ruin your day. They don't know you and lots of them don't even care to know you. The ones that do will become apparent soon enough. :)

Or....we could just do away with the flaming and immature insults;)

Unfortunately, people are not perfect and often veer away from the right direction in their passion of their beliefs. It is called being human and imperfect or flawed.

+1 to that! I'd also add that simply disappearing from the discussion in which they are challenged only to reappear at some later date in other thread doing basically the same thing is another tactic worthy scorn and derision. Yeah, that does suck, but most of the membership here is quite outspoken and more than willing to back up their statements, even if it is still more of their opinion. Once again, human nature.

Well Said.

I really do believe that some people are just generally more layed back than others and that leads to problems sometimes. Some are "the Suzy Sunshines" of the world, some are the "curmudgeonly" type of person. Cranky and a bit arrogant but pretty much on the money most of the time. Some people are just plain jaded with life experiences, making themselves a target for others with their negativity.

Hell I could go on and on, but hopefully people understand what I am saying. People are not perfect, they will lose it sometimes, or just retreat until the post cools down. They do get hurt or angry, feel pain emotionally and are "thin skinned". And all of them can feel pain emotionally. All human nature.

Perhaps the point is that people should be allowed to their opinions without others attacking them. (provided their opinion in itself is not an insult or attack on someone's post)

I find far to many posters fail to actually reply to the original post but instead just attack the poster for raising their question or issue.

We need to help not attack.

Everyone has an own opinion. Some are right and some are not. But we have to respect all their opinions for being respect to each other. Just enjoy our forum and posting, enjoy each other's company.! In casinomeister, we are one family.:)
