NEW HAVEN – — Certain words in the litany of verdicts that sent triple murderer Steven Hayes to death row Monday were reminders of what happened to a woman and her two daughters inside their Cheshire home three years ago.
Sexually assaulted. Kidnapped. Murdered.

Included in the repetitive recitation of the verdicts by the judge's clerk Monday in Superior Court were the words Dr. William Petit Jr. has said were often missing from three years' worth of court hearings:

Steven Hayes Sentenced To Death For CT Triple Murder

Steven Hayes Steven Hayes, the ex-con who was found guilty of killing a Connecticut mother and her two daughters (as well as beating her husband), was sentenced to death. The Courant reports, "The jury"—made up of seven women and five men—"sentenced Hayes to death on all six possible death-penalty counts: killing [Jennifer Hawke-Petit and Michaela and Hayley [Petit] in the course of a single action; killing a child under the age of 16; killing Hawke-Petit in the course of a kidnapping; killing Hayley in the course of a kidnapping; killing Michaela in the course of a kidnapping; and killing Hawke-Petit in the course of a sexual assault."
The 2007 crime was a home invasion plot hatched between two ex-cons (Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky, who faces trial next year) that escalated into sexual assaults against 11-year-old Michaela Petit and mother Jennifer Hawke-Petit and Hawke-Petit's death by strangulation and the deaths of daughters Michaela and Hayley, 17, when the pair set fire to the Petit home. Only Dr. William Petit survived, who, after being beaten and bound in the basement, managed to escape the house and go to a neighbor's for help.

Hayes' lawyer made a bid to save his client's life last week, telling the jurors, "This is a human being. You may not like him, you may hate him, you may despise what he did in this case, but he's not a rabid dog that needs to be put down."

I'm glad he got the death penalty. It makes you wonder about lawyers sometimes. Personally, I think he should die the same way those girls did. Just my opinion...an eye for an eye...

I will never understand how any lawyer can claim people like that are still human beings. once they have crossed that line and have done such heinous things to real human beings, then they have demonstrated they are nothing more than vicious animals without a shred of humanity left in them.

As a matter of fact, he IS.

I am not a rabid fan of the death penalty, but I have to say in some cases it is MORE than called for. In fact I would go one step further and say people should be punished with whatever method THEY used to kill.
I don't like that violent side of myself, I am in general a peace loving person, but some just need to be removed from our world, period.

they need to be put into an old shack with a table that is nailed to the floor and have gasoline poured all over the outside and then they need to have their manhood if you can call it that nailed to the table and then give them a very old very rusty dull knife and tell them they have a choice eather cut it off or burn to death and set the place on fire.

and if by chance they do have enough guts to cut it off before they burn to death and run to get out i think the door should be locked so they can,t get out. just give them a little tast of what those poor people felt.

Good riddance. I'm glad they went to trial in a place that has the death penalty. Here in Canada we have criminals that are as bad - or worse - than these two. And here they're constantly coming up for appeal or trying to sue the prison system or sometimes even getting out!

When Charles Ng was captured in Canada, Canada wouldn't extradite him because he would face the death penalty! The public here was absolutely livid about it. Finally they did send him back but it took 6 years of battling. For those of you who don't know who he was, google him.

Oh yeah and while you're at it, google Karla Homolka...she just recently got out of prison. I'm hoping to meet her in a dark alley one day.

Too bad the monsters didn't commit the crime in California. Too bad for them I mean, I don't think we've put anyone to death since good old Gov. The thing that is beyond comprehension with these 2 is that SHE allowed him to rape and kill her 14 year old sister as a CHRISTMAS present, on Christmas eve.
This woman was sentenced to 12 years for her role in helping her husband rape and kill. WTF. Not only is she free but HOW could she only be sentenced to 12 years? It's friggin insane.
Oh yes, she claimed she was "afraid" of him. Played the abuse card.
Any woman out here who would be so scared they would allow their so called husband to rape and kill their younger sister?
Oh and they videotaped much of what they did also, so they could watch it again.

And get this, she's got a baby now....she's shacked up or married to some male porn star - plus she has complete freedom to go anywhere or do whatever she wants. she should be dead and that baby should be taken away she might have a relapse and do the same thing to the baby that she let happen to her sister.

there is no death that would be bad enough or hurt enough for people like that.

there is nobody alive that i would be sceard enough of that i would stand by and let them take anoughter human life they would have to go thought me frist.

i get so mad when i hear of people like that getting off and there are people who r sitting in prison that really don,t belong there for life and yet people like her get to walk and have a life after killing people.

i think that if you kill someone and they know without a doubt that you did it then you should die no quistons asked just kill you right there and then.

no staying on death row for years on end. the person you killed don,t get that they are just dead.

Well I could see killing someone in a fit of rage. Like if you found out someone was molesting your children. Or if someone was trying to kill you so you had to kill them to protect yourself. I can understand that...I can even sympathize with that.

But these spree killers, they do it for no other reason than either it's part of the 'thrill' or to hide what they've done and usually so they can go out and do it again to someone else.

Komisarjevsky Is 2nd Man On Trial In Deadly Cheshire Home Invasion
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- A New Haven judge has set a date for jury selection in the trial of the second man police say played a role in a deadly Cheshire home invasion in 2007.
Jury selection for Joshua Komisarjevsky is slated to begin on Feb. 22.
Judge Jon Blue said defense motions must be filed by Feb. 4 and the state must respond to the notions by Feb. 11. Blue said if there were arguments to be made on the motions, they would be heard Feb. 15-17.
