Who Is Googling You?

They make this out to be scarier than it actually is.

"Every computer has a Web browser that has an IP address, which basically gives you a location," said DeMello. "It gives you the ability to time stamp it. So if someone goes to Google and they are in San Diego, we clearly know the time they went on and the time it came into us. We know what browser it came from."

DeMello insisted that the company would never reveal the actual name of the person.

"We think that it is a real privacy issue," said DeMello. "We need to make sure we always think about it."

But security experts say it wouldn't be hard to take that next step and get the name and address.

There's only one way to get the user's contact information based solely on their IP address, and that is to get a warrant for this information and provide it to their ISP. To even do this, one would have to prove they were acting illegally.

The technology can also help consumers track down people they want to avoid. Katie May joined a site called Naymz.com. Through its visitor tracking service, she figured out that an old boyfriend had been Googling her and sending inappropriate emails.

That paragraph is moot. Of course someone can find your email address via any search engine if you post it on the internet. If you don't want someone to know it, keep it private.

What I don't get is why they're singling out Google. There's many many other search engines out there that people can get the exact same information from.

I love to google people. Ill be doing something and remember someone from my past and go see if I can find them lol. It worked a few times and I got to connect with some friends from the past.

I also google my brother alot because thats the only way I can catch up with what he's up to lol. He thinks its funny. I send him articles he doesnt even know he's in!
