It seems like yesterday that Megaways was the only gaming mechanic that anyone was interested in. That was back around the time Bonanza exploded (literally) on the scene and it all coincided with the sudden rise of streamers, bonus buys, and highly volatile slots.

Fast forward 10 years, I am interested to know what our membership thinks of Megaways now. Is it still a game mechanic that you are drawn to or do you go out of your way to avoid it?

Some Megaways facts:

First Megaways slot: Dragon Born (2015)

Number of active Megaways slots:
377 (source BWB)

Evolution bought Megaways developer Big Time Gaming for: 450m

Read our BTG review and find out where to play BTG slots

I am drawn to it because it still is the only one that shows big wins in my mind, ie the Max Megaways 2 win over the weekend.

The newer mechanics such as the stupid 3 pots games and the endless fishing and book ones are just dull.

They need to find the next generation mechanic but they seem to be bowing down to the casinos margins rather than finding something exciting, take Crazy Time probably will always be Evolution's top game because the games they have produced since the casinos panic at the prospect of a 50x top multiplier happening with doubles so they know the casinos don't want this type of win so games made after it never quite live up to the hype even with the most up to date fancy graphics.

I remember someone did an interview with one of Evolution's top staff and he was asked if the games they produce next wouldn't go near to the Crazy Time potential because the casinos would panic at the thought of another game that could give 500,000 euros/£s.

Good point on big win potential.
The ones I try to avoid but stupidly occasionally dabble in are Iron Dog Megaways and I did this last night chose a random Megaways game turned out to be an Iron Dog game and surprise surprise my £20 was gone instantly, I said change game but I thought nah give it a go and instant regret.

I find Iron dog impossible to win on, anyone else? I mean I just close em now as soon as the iron dog logo comes up LOL

Iron Dog logo has the same effect as Red Tiger logo or the Daily Jackpots on the VS thumbnail sometimes I might have a spin or two if new games but generally I avoid at all costs.

I'll still play them a bit but nowhere the amount is used to , I was flat out playing bison rising for the last few years and had some nice wins but id never won over a grand on it . Ive had 4 wins on Gigantoonz this year over a grand and one on Reactoonz. I've done nowhere near the amount of spins on those games as ive done on Bison rising but have had way better wins more often . I think that the huge 20000x Megaways max win they advertise, is living in fantasy land as you'd have a better chance of winning the Euromillions as hitting a max win on it

Had to chuckle reading @Reelsoffun and @steveh35 remarks -deffo also have that see certain logo = instant exit button, but it's not the Red Tiger or Iron Dog for me: i think both have a few decent games, Megaways or otherwise. That said, yeah, specifically Iron Dog seems pretty harsh in their Megaways offering: doesn't feel like much middle-ground, but i've had a few good wins on 'm nonetheless...

And @conker Definitely love my Megaways, not to the point where i seek them out specifically, but a lot of my fav. slots happen to be Megaways :)

Was a bit surprised there are only 377 out there currently: is that number really correct? Could it be some are not yet categorized, or categorized falsely (something i noticed at least Operators seem great at )?
Or are clones not counted? Feels like i've seen thousands...

Yes, 377 is not right - check out my personal page of Megaways games here:

There's 372 on it and I stopped adding them at the end of October 2024, since when tens of new ones have come out.

It's well over 400 now, surely?

I found all megaways after White rabbit quite boring. Then came Primal megaways which added the feature of guaranteed connection with mystery wilds. After that pragmatic overdid the megaways in the beginning. But in the past two three years Pragmatic have come up with great features in their megaways slot with my favourite one being the wild feature on witchheart megaways. Everytime I decide to stop playing megaways pragmatic comes with a great feature.

This one was always my favorite. Originally found it on Pulsz when I first started online but I've seen it do some heavy numbers. Can't find it anymore.
206.webp

I still play them on and off have been having some good luck on the isoft megaways games recently find them better to play and pay than btgs which I probably have the least amount of luck on .Someone mentioned iron dog earlier which was another provider I used to win big on their megaways ,1 million bc and rock the reels been my favorite but cant even land a bonus on them now days

Honestly, it's a bit of both! I play them and I avoid them at other occasions so pretty ambivalent about Megaways. Similar to specific dishes you just have to have the feeling for it. Lobster one day, tacos in the other day. Recently, I played Dogmason's Mega Woof (promise me you won't search that and click images, I was not expecting that!) and that crypto slot umm....Blockchain Megaways just for the vibey tune lol

Bonanza has quite possibly the best bonus trigger in the world of slots. Sadly it's so rare and usually shite but hey, can't have it all.

When there's a new MW release I'll give it a whirl but usually not more than 50 to 100 spins, it can't be worse than new Hacksaw or NLC releases. They can give much better wins tho but that aside.

Have to be honest I don't even know what BTG's latest release is.

Worse part is it almost feels like its programmed to know you are at a low balance....

Soon as you get to a certain low state of balance - you will start to see MORE GOL, GOL, GOL for the last good few spins with no prevail.

Feels like a scummy programming tactic to allure you into a false sense of hope.

I was once a huge fan of Bonanza. Used to get a bonus every 400 to 500 spins and decent base game hits. One fine day I started my session on a 20 cents bet and gradually increased my bet after every 400 spins to a point when I was doing €1 spins. I stopped raising after I reached €1. 3000 spins later no bonus and I quit.

I love Megaways, Bonanza started me on that as that used to be my favourite slot, Now I mainly play Pragmatic and Bgaming.
Been playing @Slots Temple after hearing good things the site is so boring got a few wins when first on there and then dead for days over rated sitei play mostly big bass some are shocking there new things I have learnt from there which I didn’t know from playing the same games on other sites are how many empty fisherman show up and levels 2 /3 are mostly empty not a site I would recommend but highly recommended on here cannot see why best to keep low bets there10pence only my opinion not seen any great certainty does not like to pay on 30pence spins
