Question What makes a good slot?

Hi All,

As said in my newbie-thread: I am mostly a poker/black-jack player, as card games have always been a thing in my family.

I occasionally play some slots, but never know what to look at in finding decent/fun slots.

So, what would you advice? What do you like in a slot?

I look for gameplay duration, with reasonable or good win potential....as a lowroller I want to get some value for money. This is where something like Dead or Alive is best because it has a steady base game and massive, attainable potential.

Also games where you can incrementally up bets without it tanning your hide, so I'd put the 9-liners in there for reliability, like Spring Break, Thunderstruck etc

Bonanza (and BTG in general) are immensely engaging WITH potential but most definitely not that lowroller- friendly. Expect to burn the candles at both ends and get about 10x less playtime as result!

I think the most important thing is knowing the variance and pay profiles of the slots you are going to play and choosing one based on what you are looking for. E.g. if you want a chance for an absolutely massive win and don't mind your session running short in case you're not being very lucky I would suggest playing Jamming Jars but if you are looking for entertainment for a decent amount of time for your deposit I would absolutely not recommend that game. Once you know how the games pay you can start choosing them based on what kind of features you like. Some like playing old 9-liners, some prefer "Book games" and someone else might mostly play the megaways games.

Personally I like switching it up playing many kinds of slots but I always start with how volatile of a game I'm willing to play right now and the decision is based on many things such as my balance, how long I want to play, possible bonus wagering, how lucky I'm feeling and so on. I try to avoid slots where triggering a bonus doesn't guarantee a bonus round and ones with bad RTP (<95%).

Personally I think a slot which gives a reasonable spread of wins to keep you going, is capable of giving reasonably frequent features which predominantly pay up to 300x but can, on occasion, go to around 1000x. In other words, medium variance. That is just my preference. I do think for the slightly more HV then a game like Genie Jackpot Megaways does a decent job of playability whilst occasionally going mad.

Cannot stand slots which pay for thousands and thousands of spins around 50-70% and then occasionally dumps 2000x plus. Just no entertainment whatsoever.

I haven’t found 1 other person on this forum who has anything positive to say about this game but as a low roller Birds on a wire is my go to slot. You don’t get many big hits in the base game but the bonus rounds come fairly often. A lot of them do pay smallish (what slot doesn’t?) but it can pay some decent ones and when you hit 5oak on the x20 multiplier it soon mounts up. Good luck 20 or 50p spins recommend:thumbsup:.

At the moment my favourite games are:

Bonanza (it can be brutal and frustrating so be warned)
Book of Dead (there are lots of book game clones but this one is my favourite)
Raging Rex
Captain Venture
Immortal Romance
Halloween Jack
Blood Suckers (the original one)

If I was you I’d try out a few in free mode to get a feel for the games to see what kind of games you like. There are so many to choose from it can be overwhelming when you first start but I found this site to be invaluable for tips on what to try so I’m sure you’ll fine something to your liking :)

I'll be trying a few over the week :) So if anyone has any advice on favorite slot?!
Just a quick question - are you in Brighton in England (about 30 miles from me ;)), or another Brighton somewhere else in the world that just copied their name from the Sussex one?

The reason I ask is that if you are in the USA or AUS for example, you wont be able to play any of the slots mentioned so far in this thread :(

I am indeed in Brighton UK!

Everyone has their own favourites, so a good way to find a slot you like is to try them out in free mode first (as some mentioned) :)

Also decide what you are looking for in a game, low variance (pays more often but not as much), high variance (pays less often but can potentially pay more) or something inbetween. That line can at times be quite blurry but is worth keeping in mind depending on your budget, preferences etc

I was also going to suggest blood suckers if you don't mind the older slots. It's a medium variance, maybe even low-medium variance slot with a small house edge. In other words, it has a good chance of giving you some play time and maybe coming out ahead, but won't give you the monster hits of some of the other slots.

Immortal romance is another good slot and a favorite of many people for a reason, medium variance but if you're really lucky there are a few monster wins possible. Pretty good sound/graphic design, though not the newest slot.

I'm not as familiar with all the new stuff, so if the most modern, impressive graphics are important to you, maybe others could point you in the right direction.

I would recommend to start with very small bets until you have a good understanding of how slots work. Probably divide the amount of money you want to risk by about 500 and aim to bet that much on each spin. For example, if you are risking $100, try 20c bets - you can always increase it later. Even low to medium variance slots can take money fast if you're having an unlucky day. You may prefer to be more aggressive with your bet sizing later on, but smarting small is safest - if you start too big, you can't correct the mistake because you'll be out of money. I would consider your first deposit a trial run, and you can decide if you want to take bigger risks after you know what you're getting into. Expect to lose, but be happy if you win.

Once you know what you're doing, I would recommend playing low variance slots on a bigger bet, but keeping a small bet size for the crazy, high variance stuff.

You can try some of the higher variance slots recommended by others, just remember that your money can disappear real fast - so either be prepared for that or again keep the bet sizes low. Dead or alive and bonanza which have been mentioned fits in this category. I don't think I'd recommend dead or alive to start with, it might seem really boring if you don't understand the slot (the appeal comes from the potential in the bonus round). But it is a good game.

The advice mentioned above to consider trying slots in play money first is also worth considering. You could even try out a bunch of slots before you get your paycheck so you know what to expect when you play.

Almost forgot to mention, but you said you were a card and poker player - you could also consider trying out video poker if that's your thing. If you're not familiar with it, it's basically a cross between poker and a slot game. You play directly against the casino and get a payout based on the strength of your hand - stronger hand, bigger payout. Usually 5 card draw.
