In his time he's made multiple donations to politicians at both sides of the aisle, IIRC he even donated to Harris when she was running for attorney general in California.
First he approached the Democrat party to be their candidate, they weren't interested.
After that he became a Republican. All of the R politicians that don't follow his rhetoric are usually blasted on his social media. Those are the ones that are called RINO's.

Basically he went where they thought he could be useful and took over the party in the mean time.

Basically, Trump is an 80's democrat, perhaps moved a little bit more right because of the liberal madness that's been growing since the 2000s.
