US political crisis

You think they never let off other presidents and VIPs, brushed stuff under the carpet, you've only got look at 'mr 10% for the big guy' who's now in the WH, bush jnr and cheney and his wars etc..

I haven't read the article, but I can't see why he wasn't entitled to fire the AG if he felt the guy was being blind and useless about 'potential' election fraud.
Well, he fired pretty much everyone who didnt suck up to him.
I dont think any other administration even comes close to the turnover Trump had.
Just look at poor Fox news. They removed their nose from his butt for 1 second, and he disowned them.
And for what, for correctly predicting the outcome of who would win a state.

Im not sure how the impeachment process works, but surely the calls he made there towards the end where he begged, bargained & threatened republican senators to "find" the exact number of votes he needed to win must be enough on its own to get impeached.

Trump was of the mindset [i believe] that nearly 250,000 votes had been illegally counted in Georgia, so the bit where he says all I need to do is find 11,000 is context [not 'all you need to do is find me'] if you were raffensperger which is more embarrasing owning up to massive errors in the counting or just 11,000. That's my interpretation of trump's thinking there, whether he was right in believing there were hundreds of thousands of dodgy votes is another issue, I don't know how solidy republican that area tends to be.

I guess no one liked my national treasure joke, it cracked me up when I thought of it. Of course it could have just been all the sugar products I had consumed.

I'll have to run it by some people here and see if it bombs.

Exactly, they (CNN) spun it to say go find 11k votes.

His hiring and firing record was a bit wild for want of a better word, plus involving family in actual govt roles and decisions I generally wouldn't agree with. Half of Fox never wanted trump from the start to be president, it was odd they called arizona for biden earlier than the other stations.

Might have been a bit odd coming from fox, but it was not like it affected the outcome in any way.
But it shows what happens to those that dont suck up to him.
He obviously couldnt fire Fox new, since they technically didnt work for him, so he took his tantrum to twitter instead.

I just think his whole "draining the swamp" thing kind of falls flat when he hires family, fires anyone who does not agree with him and instead fills his administration with yes-men who wont ever question him.

I dont think his call was spun to sound like anything other than what it was.
He begged, he threatened and tried to bargain, all in the same call, to get Raffensperger to change the election in his favor.
And i highly doubt that was the only call like that he made.

The liberal establishment sure are desperate to impeach Trump, but now that he is no longer president what is the actual point, is it a fishing trip in order to find stuff to criminally prosecute him?

All seems intentional to get to a point where they can declare his was an illegitimate presidency, they just can't cope with the fact 74 million like him and his MAGA idea more than their policies.
An important consequence would be that Trump can never run for president again, that's the actual point of it.

Don't totally disagree with parts of this, but also with the best will in the world he was never going to be able to drain the swamp, that will probably require a kennedy type figue, younger...mayber Tucker will throw his hat in :p Though there will probably always be a degree of political/business corruption [esp in a huge and powerful country made up of individual states larger themselves than many countries] but cutting it down is an admirable idea.

I wonder if Biden will ever do a speech about corruption [that doesn't involve trump] and lobbying etc...

The way I see it is that Trump was never a career politician dependent on backing and lobby money where many on both sides of the house where. Just like opposition politicians around the world they will appose each other in public then happily spend the evening together at shindigs. Now both sides will be shitting themselves about the possibility of him forming a new party because maybe he will be able to split the votes from both sides to win in 4 years time and nothing will be able to stop it if he did.
JMO :)

He did put back the executive order about lobbying on his first day.
Or put a new one in place is probably the right term.
Think it was 2 years instead of 5, but other than that it was similar to the one Trump tore up.

I think he'll be too old, and if the last election is to be believed he would need lots more votes, even if he got a clean bill of health from all these investigations and court cases, there's only so much high level politics and controversy one man can experience, I think he will have had his fill by now.

I doubt many people voting for the democrats in this election would swap to Trump if he ran solo.
I think he has alot of support among republicans, but instead of taking votes from both sides and winning, i think it would be more like splitting the republican vote and the democrats would win easily.

Did you know that Fox is now effectively owned by Disney?

That depends on the amount of Dem supporters happy with the way things will go over the next few years as well as how they view the events over the past few years.
If things do not change what with the Media cancel culture I can not see Americans of any flavor wanting a one party state which is what it could become

They are not the only ones being owned by Disney.

I thought, when I looked it up before, that rupert had kept the fox news channel separate [with his news international set up and wall street journal] and perhaps disney own the movie company and sports, drama channels etc..?
It is still a branch of Disney though. Maybe there is still a conflict of interests going on at the moment which is reflected in the fact that their content is so conflicting at times?

Yes I wouldn't have much hope in fox news staying the same if disney are pulling the strings, I wonder if Rupert thinks traditional tv channels have had their day and wanted to cash out, but he's kept the parts which he can use to influence politics.

Incidentally. Did you notice that some Dem congressman was calling for some online channels be banned/canceled/removed from online because they support conservative views and have more viewers than CNN?

And did you read that Facebook have decided to pass over the case of Trumps account to an "independent" entitly for review?

For me this is an important development because it will introduce the beginning of there being an online government policing all online content with "laws" etc.
The TV companies are all sown up regarding their content what with OFCOM in the UK and regulators in most countries

I've no idea but I did notice over recent months that Ausi Sky News where not too worried about sticking to the same narrative as most media around he world?
Have you noticed that just about every station is pushing the "Build back better" slogan? It is almost as if they where all in the same assembly and the head told them to go out and spread the word!

I'd have as much trust in that independent body as I do these 'fact' checkers that have popped up everywhere :p

Trump just got his mantra wrong. Must have been out of the loop. Even Gretta got the memo although she obviously had no idea what she was being asked to say and Jacinta Arden simply wants to brew Craft Beer :)

I was watching CNN the other day and they had the vaccine distribution numbers on the right while gas lighting at the same time. (one source tells CNN) I hear they removed the US death chart as I pointed out they might in the COVID19 thread weeks ago. At least its not on there as I'm typing this. They are clearly worrying my oldest sister to death.

LOL, I can see why Fauci has survived in his job as director of the NIAID since 1984. He knows when to jump ship.

Fauci knew exactly what the virus was as soon as it started transmitting between humans. It appears that he funded the experiments. Try doing a basic search of Steve Hilton and see where you find this video.

Edit. It has been removed already!

In America and there politics
I’d say personally mate it’s a biased shit storm of nonsense.

if your from a certain opinion that means less to those in the power that ‘be’s’ then your opinion means shit.

on the other hand should this opinion be similar or leaning a certain way towards certain politics you get a pass, no matter what you say to others or how you disrespect them.

it’s not freedom of speech... it’s a farce.

but for the record so I’m not banned again, it’s why I don’t or won’t give a genuine opinion on here any longer....

happy to just sit it out now, I’ll do my corona cooking and maybe comment here nor there, but as for real discussion...

Sorry it’s not aloud on here.

I think it has been incredibly divisive, from both sides.
I guess it is easier to become that way when theres only two parties to vote for, and i think its always been that way in the USA elections, but not on this scale.

I mean, the whole election campaigns from both sides, was more about telling people how awful the other side and their politics is, instead of explaining how awesome their own politics is.
I dont know , it just seems bizarre to me, with those "attack ads" running 24/7 etc.
But then again, people seem to be way more vocal about politics in USA compared to here. Lawn signs, bumper stickers, clothing etc to show who/what you are voting for.
It all looks very odd to me.

Agreed - we 'tend' to share a philosophy here; granted, not across the board, but, rather a general understanding.
The division we see in the US/UK..is...odd to us :)

Are you referring to people in general, or about the members of Casinomeister? If it's the later, then I think we are done with this "Political Rants" section. I am sick and tired of the toxicity of these sorts of posts and how it's affecting the membership.

How do Canadians feel about the decision to stop the Keystone pipeline? It seems to me that Biden is destroying oil and gas production in his own country by halting new gas and oil drilling projects and Arctic drilling. Where will America get its gas and oil from? Invading Venezuela?
I don't get it?

The point is to be less reliant on fossil fuels. Less oil/gas, more solar/wind/water energy.

They were pissed. Especially Alberta. 48% of US imports come from Canada.

The US has always bought oil from Venezuela and still does as well as other countries (90 actually).
While mathematically (exports-imports) the US is a net exporter of oil, the oil produced here is put on the World Market.

If the idea is to rely less on fossil fuels and instead switch to sustainable sources then surely there needs to be a period of transition?

I see that the impeachment is going ahead despite it being unlikely to succeed. I bet Americans are very impressed with the focusing on kicking out of office despite him already being out of office instead of focusing on their relief bill so they can pay their bills?

Besides. I see that Trump has stated that he will not form a new party but instead he has played a blinder in my opinion.
It will take something like 17 republicans to vote for impeachment which is unlikely. But Trump has vouched to run against one of the rhino's and he is looking to see which one. Those that may have considered voting for his impeachment would shit themselves if he targeted their seat

You think people suddenly stop using oil? There's already a transition period going on and it's happening really slowly...but it's happening!

Republicans like to play politics with these so they might as well vote to convict Trump. And prevent him from seeking office ever again. Besides the only ones who are blocking the aid are the republicans.

I do hope that Trump starts another political party. Small civil war in the republican party will do some good for it.

Yes, It's doubtful 17 Republicans will vote to impeach.

Another debate, have the private sector or the government transition off the fossil fuels. Although I do hear the CO2 emissions have dropped 12% here (not fact checked). Currently Petrol is dirt cheap here. 60 cents a litre/$2.29 gallon up the street.

I'm not sure if I understand your question?

We arent fans of Trump, but we arent hardly singing hally-loos for Biden either. :) The pipeline is a point of contention as is 'buy Amercan'
As mentioned, more, a lesser of 2 evils
It helped his first official state call was to us to at least address issues and make nice, however
