Spam Issue - MailChimp

Hi All,

I don't know if it's me or if the Compliance Dept. at MailChimp.com is pissing in my pocket but I can't believe the email response I received after submitting a complaint about spam.

On site they state:

XXXhttp://www.mailchimp.com/abuse/

"For customers who are 'starting from scratch' with MailChimp (and have no lists of customers to import), we give them free signup forms to place on their website. The signup forms only use the double opt-in (aka "confirmed opt-in") method. This method keeps prank signups out, and also stores opt-in proof for every subscriber (IP Address, Date/timestamps, etc)"

When I submitted my spam complaint to MailChimp.com, I used the logic that my mail server uses an anti spam verification system.

EG - All new email addresses that have not been white listed receive a verification email. The sender must respond to this mail before the original email is delivered to my in-box.

As this has not taken place, it is impossible for me to have received the double opt-in and or approved such opt-in request.

Every couple of days I review my mail verification queue (it grows rather large quickly). These are mails received that have not yet been verified & or white listed.

Sitting in that queue was not one (1) but three (3) notifications from MailChimp.com stating my spam complaint had been received.

Obviously they send via a mail box that is not monitored.

On seeing these I manually white listed MailChimp.com and these were then delivered to my mail box.

Today I received the following from the Compliance Dept. at MailChimp.com

Hello David,

We have replied to your email requesting verification that we are human. It requests that the subject line stay intact and does not state that we are required to provide any message in the text body. Indeed we are human. If you have any questions or concerns please let us know. Thanks!

Since this fiasco has been playing out, its just come to mind how I must have been added (without my consent) to the mail list for emptyjets.com.au (the catalyst of this complaint to MailChimp.com).

Back in November 2009 I contacted a Sydney based aeronautical company (altitudeaviation.com.au) making an inquiry regarding a Learjet.

It didn't trigger, but from this inquiry some bright spark at altitudeaviation.com.au, has seen fit to add my email address (without my consent) to their client database on their new site emptyjets.com.au

Come Monday they'll be receiving a non to friendly response.

We're not talking nickel and dime business here. Hence I'm flabbergasted that such a incident has taken place, without my prior consent.

Cheers

:)

Dave
