Well,

Sitting here in my home sipping a nice cup of coffee on my day off.
As it is a bank holiday in The Netherlands (I work in Ireland but get to take my Dutch bank holidays). :)

Anyway, last Monday 3 colleague's and myself were told we are going to be made redundant.
My employer has sold the Belgian part of the company and solely will focus it's activities on the Irish market now.
We did see it coming and I already was shopping around for new jobs but yet still I feel a bit sad.
Have worked in this place for 7 years and made several new friends.
It just felt so trusted to go there every day from 8am to 5pm and now that is all gonna be finished from June 30th.

To avoid drama, I have already found a new job as it is not hard for bi-lingual people to find work in Ireland. ;)
My next venture will start August 1st as I wanted to take a wee sabbatical, so after I finish up I will have a month for myself.
Fits perfect as my kids are off school for summer holidays too. :):)

Positive part is that we got a decent redundancy package so I am now in the position to go and look for a newer and better car and I do not have to touch the savings for our holiday later this year.

So a bit of a double sided feeling.
Sad to leave the place and my friends and colleague's but also excited for the new challenge that lies ahead in my new job. :)

Anyone else ever had been made redundant?
For me this was a first time.

Yes, twice. You soon miss the camaraderie and if you don't start work again you may soon start to feel a bit isolated. It serves as reminder most people live their lives to someone else's orders, instructions and clock. When I got Ill-health retirement from my last employer I was already working freelance on the side so decided I will never live to anybody else's clock and rules again. It can feel a bit detached and isolated as I said, but I can get up, go to bed and work when I like and with me, I always like to get jobs and work done before my own leisure. Best thing I ever did.

I just can't face the same insecurity you have just cited by depending on somebody else for all my income. I never touched a penny of my last two pay-offs, still sitting in an ISA!

Then again, I reckon it's highly likely you'll be looking back in say 24 months' time and thinking that this redundancy was a positive and you're glad it turned out for the better, if the new position becomes very enjoyable. I hope it does, enjoy the summer!

I got made redundant back in early 2012 from a job I'd been in about 12 years!

Worked my way up from office administrator to contracts manager, was on a nice 'screw' when made redundant and actually loved the role so sad, sad times when the news of closure came through.

I was not alone, the whole company folded as to cut a long story short, DWP had not offered us a new contract, reasons never disclosed but the managers among us knew

Its never a good thing but It is good to grab the positives and take a step back, a little breather and look at our options :D

Pretty much like Dunover, I worked for myself for a while but also decided I'd never "flog myself to death" anymore, no more getting home after 12 hours absolutely dead beat

I now do little bits from home but have also taken a part-time driving role, granted for an employer but I'm using my own car and have no one on my back at all and can basically just get on with it at my own pace!

Yeah, starting my own business is still on my bucket list.
I have plenty of good idea's and my brain is constantly in motion scanning for that one opportunity to do start my own wee business.
I have now 2 six year old daughters and to ensure their future I will now settle for that paid job for a boss.
Maybe when they are older I still have the chances to do something but I feel your sentiments Dunover when it comes to working for a boss.
It ensures income but you have to play by their rules which can be hard and frustrating sometimes.

One of my favourite idea's is to start a proper candy shop here as the choice of candies in Ireland are very little and most of the candy is atrocious except for the Haribo sweets, love 'em. :)
A proper candy shop is a potential goldmine in my vilage.
Especially in the summer when we also have loads of non residentials visiting our village because it is right at the sea.
Icecream, Slush Puppies, Candies would sell great.
However the winter would be challenging as there would be far less people about in the main street. :)

Ah,maybe one day.

Was self employed before, but that was more an extra income as I still had a job next to it.
Used to have a small PC/Mobile Phone repair and unlock shop in The Netherlands and that went actually quite well.

I was made redundant at the end of last year, which was in a bit of a specialised role. It kind of worked well for me, at a time when my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer so decided to take a career break to help with his care, that was the plan anyway. My employer who had made me redundant then contacted me and asked me to work for them as a self employed contractor and it grew from there - loving not having to travel to work every day in an over packed train and fitting my work around whatever else I want to do. :)

Your attitude to self employment is very good in my view. I've been self employed for years, but my daughters are grown up and I only have me to support. I've seen so many people start up a business, plough life savings in, only for it to fail and them lose everything a year or two later. I wouldn't like the uncertainty if I had two young children to support.

And there is me thinking you was Irish :D

I canot say I ever have been redundant but walked out of a few dozen jobs but I blame that on the hang overs. That was back in the day, the walking out parts, nether managed to cure the hangovers

I work with my farther, I really do not think I would last long with being told what to do of some idiot

At least you found a new job which is the main thing, Do you really need a new car? if not than invest the cash not on machines, It boggles my mind when someone gets a new motor when the one they got is perfectly ok, my sister done it just the other day

Also I thought the the redundancy pay vanished a long time back? I do know a few people that have been cut from work and at best received a few weeks pay

And there is me thinking you was Irish :D

100% Dutch breed turned for 5% into a Paddy in 7 years I live here now. :D
I even have a lucky leprechaun boxer short. :D

Oh and yes I need an upgrade of my car mate.
We have a good family car but my wife drives it mainly to work and back.
I am driving the secondary car so to speak which is still fine but not great, a bit of a newer car wouldn't harm as the current one will most likely not pass NCT without the usual fixes and repairs. :)

Well dunno about the redundancy settlements but I think it differs for each company?

My employer made sure we got at least compensated for our contribution to the company :)

Yes three years ago, three tips, don't get cabin fever if you can't find a job straight away, don't take the first thing that comes your way and get stuck in a part time job that you can't get away from and thirdly don't gamble/spend too much your redundancy thinking it will last forever because it soon goes and you regret it.

I am pretty lucky with MOT (NCT) spent half hour doing MOT last time and 29 minutes of that was him trying to put the suspension strut back in the right spot, even had ABS lights on but just change the the launguge on the dash computer :) OK the warning light still on but as long as they know its not dangerous than its all good.

I blame the idiots at the compound center for that where it was sitting for 9 months
My drive test is in August. I know I should of took one 20 years ago but I was to dangerous back in the day

You also said you had a holiday booked? where are you off to? I have not took a holiday in a long time and probably will not unless a get a huge winfall, living in a big two bedroom house certainly takes a whack out of you spending limit

So basicly I already agreed to start a new job with a certain company but then today I got a call from a recruitment office in Dublin and offered me to apply for a job with a multinational iGaming consultancy company based in Dublin.
In a nutshell it would be to maintain contact and expand their B2C customers database which are all affiliate partners for casino websites and poker websites.
He would send me all the details a.s.a.p so I can see what company it is and check them out.

Now I am really nervous but also excited as this would be a role right up my street as this kind of business interests me obviously. :)
Also the annual pay is about 5k more than the job I accepted & better perks.

I would feel guilty by dropping the other job but more income is better for me and my family.

That said, need to go through interview process and all and might not be picked for the job after all.
So maybe my excitement is a bit premature. :D;):D

Been lucky to never have been made redundant but I have made other people redundant and that was not a nice experience either, despite what some people might think, there but for the grace God etc.

If I have the power to sack peeps than surely I would have the power to compensate them, even if have to wriggle the books

To be honest if the money existed to compensate then it probably wouldn't be necessary to make redundancies in the first place, just from my own experience.

Fair point, but I would be leaving with what I could,

And so you should. The last time I was responsible for making redundancies (only had to do it twice) I accidentally forgot to submit a persons 2 week holiday form from the previous month so they were owed 2 weeks additional salary, how careless of me! ;)

I do not know how to respond to that, lost for words, I would made sure they got 2 months worths

They had already had the 2 weeks holiday and it was all I could do to get them that. ! weeks pay for every year worked and this poor chap had been with the company 14 years. Anyway, that's probably enough of hijacking this thread.

fair play, No hijacks thread as comes with the runch :)

My ex emploer was quite the legend regarding redundance pay. I appreciate he himself was self employed and wasnt getting as much work thrown his way being why it wasnt in his interest to employ me further for work that had been reduced by the people he is contracted with, meaning he could just about cope without me due to shorter days.
I worked some 4 years for him, and he based my redundancy pay on the final months working hours, which is legal, only to then cut my hours even further for that final month so that the total amount of redundancy pay was not far from feck all. :notworthy
