Is ther a way to know what card you would have received if you discarded different cards...in other words, your first dealt cards are AKT of Hearts, and T of diamonds,Tof clubs. I hold the AKT of hearts for the Royal. How can I tell which cards would I have been dealt if I held the three TENS, does it go left to right, right to left, or in the placement order of the discards...I am stumped...but always make me wonder whether I could have had a str8 flush or 4 oak...or (ouch) even a Royal...but I always go for it on 3 cards to a Royal, unless 3 oak...thanks if anyone knows

As I understand it, the deck is already shuffled when you hit deal so the first 5 cards are from the top of the deck. However many cards you draw next, come from the top of the deck in sequence. So whether you held the 3 card royal (which would be a really bad play in this scenario!), or if you held the 3 10s, the next card you get starting from the left would be the next card off the top of the deck. The card after that would now be the card that is on top of the deck (or numerically they would be the 6th and 7th cards in the deck regardless of which position they are in). Since you held 3 cards, whatever those other 2 cards you received were the same ones you would have received even if you held the other 3.

Some people think that there are cards 'under' the ones on the screen, so depending on which ones you toss away, you'll end up with different cards when you draw. I've never heard of any VP game that plays this way though. This would be more akin to a slot machine type game and would basically make the vp strategy and odds tables almost useless.

Thanks RPM...this has been a mystery to me. By the way, I keep 3 OAK Tens, instead of going for Royal.Of the 3 Royals I have gotten, , 2 were dealt 3 cards to the Royal, and one was dealt 2 to the Royal. I have never been dealt "pat" Royal, or gotten one when dealt 4 to the Royal...I don't even get my hopes up anymore.

It makes no difference whether the cards are shuffled in advance or after you made your choice which cards to hold and which ones to discard, whether the new cards are taken from the top of the deck, the bottom of the deck or whether there is one under each card you see, as long as the cards are shuffled fairly. An unseen card is an unseen card. I am pretty sure the Wizard :notworthy had a question about this.

Shuffling after you've made your choices wouldn't be shuffled fairly in my book. The deck should be shuffled and every card's position in it already determined the moment you hit 'deal' to get your first 5 cards. Its only the first 10 that really matter in a typical vp game (pick-em would be the only difference I could think of) and those 10 should not change once the hand begins and should be dealt out in sequence. Anything else wouldn't be kosher.

By "fair" I mean that all the possible orders of the unseen cards have the same probability. If this is true, then it does not matter when the cards are shuffled.
