My Dad is a World War 2 Vet and was recently in the hospital, the VA Medical Hospital in Nashville and sadly i must say some of that is true. In the ward with my Dad was a Veitnam Vet who had been in the hospital for months following surgery, he could have been sent home 3 months ago, but he was homeless.

The VA Hospital is letting him stay there till they can find a Vet Home for him,The Vet almost died on the streets or back alleys of Nashville, when he was picked up, he was taken to the closest hospital where it was discovered that he had an honorable discharge and would have been considered a hero in this era but not of his, instead he came home to people spitting upon him and calling him a baby killer, most forget that the Veitnam Vet served his or her country proudly too and that many are indeed homeless and need help.

I know this to be pure fact and not fiction as i had an enlightning picture into what he has been thru the last 37 years, he drew no money from the goverment and got by doing odd jobs, never had a family of his own or a place to call home, he had a sister but doesnt know if she is living or not, parents are now dead, the VA is also helping to find out if he has any other family somewhere and will be helping with a monthly check, something he is entitled to and deserves.

I dont know if Mr. B has gone to his new home or found any family members yet as my Dad was released from the hospital. I hope that he will have a place to call home and be around former war vets and know that he is not alone in this world.

So next time you see a bum on the street, you dont have to stop and help but dont be so quick to judge that person but instead be thankful for the life you have, it could be another Mr. B asking if you want your windsheild cleaned for a buck so that he can eat, not to buy booze.................laurie

Many years ago when I lived/worked in San Francisco there was a story in the local paper about the homeless living on the streets in San Francisco. The reporter who researched and wrote the story had gone undercover to join the homeless in the streets and "become one of them." What he learned from the experience impressed me: The vast majority are "homeless" by choice. It was easier and more lucrative to beg for a living than work at a job. Unfortunately, that mindset is also used to "beg" for money by organizations who claim to "feed the children" and "save beaten and abused animals."

In our country today there are too many homeless. The problem will only get worse before its gets better. With our goverments resouces streached to limit as it is. With the Bill we are leaving our children. Their have been news reports of tent citys popping up all over the place. Children suffering as well as the old. We are the first to help when disaster strikes( earthquakes and hurricans) But I feel we are the last to notice are own. Think about this: the little things you do affect everyone. Places you shop, food you buy the clothes on your back. When companies are forced to let people go because of us the consumer we add to the homeless. A year ago my friend Chris was sad because she lost her job due to downsizing her parents told her dont worry we will help you until she got on her feet. Thank god! Chris decided to work a shelter for the homeless on weekends. She called me up crying her boss who had four children was in the shelter he had also lost his job and then lost everything. They were living there. She found another job but allways gives back now because of it.. To many in our country live paycheck to paycheck. To many are just a stones throw from poverty. Who knows that could be you one day. I dont know what the answer is. Will our country fix itself overnight no. There are way to many greedy corporations and politicians for that to happen. I do know that I can share what I have when I can. Its a small start but its a start. I dont mind buying a little extra in groceries so I can give to a family that needs food. So I dont buy the Omaha steaks this month I buy the tube steak from Jewel. So What if it feeds or helps someone for the little sacrafices that I made its worth it to me.. Im not very spirtitual. And Im not preaching but when our goverment seems to be failing us I think it is up to us to help those who cant help themselves.

Are there people who abuse the system yes.

Im talking about the people you know, the ones that truly appreciate what you do. The ones that one day when back on their feet would pass it along and never forget that someone helped them.

Last Month when the earthquake hit someone asked me why now are all these people helping when the same country needed so much before?

My response was when a disaster stikes we forget that we are a country fighting with other countrys. We forget who are enemys are> We Become Human.

We remember that they are the same as us, suffering and needing help. Too bad and very sad that is usally takes a disaster for all of us to remember that.

Just my thoughts and not intended to offend anyone.

From Gordon Sinclair circa 1973

I found this again, having not heard it since 9/11 , its from a regarded Canadian Broadcaster, the words were true back then and much so again today just a different time and different countries.

I Remember hearing it as a grade schooler and at the time we had Vets coming home in body bags and some just going north to Canada.

We are a country that takes care of our vets, some slip thru the cracks as not all is perfect in life and in goverment and somehow we manage to try to take care of other nations when they need it, maybe if alot of that money was spent at home, we wouldnt be in half the shape we are today, sure we would still have our troubles but we are not that type of nation to just sit still and watch others suffer imo..................laurie........your American friend:)

A shopkeeper near me and I were having a conversation one day about his experiences while in South America shooting a documentary on shamans.

He was there for quite a while and experienced everything from altering his mind in the Amazon, to having his bus shot up by FARC rebels.

I asked him what it was like to experience that kind of poverty first hand and he actually looked surprised.

He stated that the people in SA do not live in poverty.

They have roofs over their heads, food to eat, close knit families, and responsible communities.
If our 'standards of living' were applied to them based on their 'quality of life', they'd mostly be considered prosperous.

True poverty is what we see when we walk down our streets.

That person you see sleeping in the alcove does NOT have a home.
He/she does NOT have food, or a kitchen.

Nor do they have any hope.

The reason is OUR FAULT.

We choose to classify them as 'bums', 'winos', 'crack heads', etc instead of acknowledging the truth: It does not matter what circumstances brought them to this position, they are now people living in poverty and need our assistance.

I do applaud the efforts of the organizations that are working around the world to end child poverty, but why don't they do any work in OUR NEIGHBOURHOODS?

My roommate's child's elementary school has 252 students enrolled.
Of them, 250 live in rental housing. Only ONE FAMILY owns their own home.
In addition the school has a breakfast program sponsored by the province because there is a hunger issue, but does not have a PTA, nor do the children ever go on field trips, because the parent (mostly single parent families) can not afford anything.

The Downtown Eastside of Vancouver is 'the poorest postal code in Canada'

Two Olympic venues and the athlete's village are in this neighbourhood.

Instead of addressing poverty and homelessness in Vancouver, the province chose to hide them instead and enacted a number of draconian pieces of legislation to give the police the power to do so.

The vast security setup that is in place isn't there in case of a terrorist attack, it's to keep the protesters and homeless people away.

We DO have poverty and hungry children in our own neighbourhoods.

Whether you choose to see it is up to you, but it affects us all and we must each do our part.

OK, I'll tell you, rockycatt...
As you may see, I'm living in the Republic of Belarus. Our country was the first country which people were fighting with Nazi (Poland was occupied in one month, so I think there was no resistance to occupation).
In the Second World War II USSR (and Belarus, as part of it) lost almost 27.000.000 people (soldiers and civilians). In Belarus every third man or woman were killed or taken to Germany for work. We lost almost 34% of our population in 1418 days.
USA lost 405.399 people. Just compare 27.000.000 and 405.399...hope you won't say that we weren't "involved in keeping the peace".
For more information I'd suggest you to read this article:

Oh, yes, and we have a lot veterans, and we honor them and care about them. And I can bet my reputation on that fact that noone of them is homeless.

those photos are extremely complementing and very delightful to look at
and your country's history leaves no reservation's now that its clear

but you chose to show a very derogatory pictures of my country
along with this quote

Is that true that in the USA almost 3.000.000 homeless people and almost 750.000 of them are veterans? Thanks.

and to end the statement with the word thanks [thanks for what it was nothing less than a insult from you personally

lets not get rhetorically involved in a test of political rhetoric skill's

look at your first post than look at your rebuttal and in your own admission that is what it is

and that speaks volumes of your respect for my country while i admire yours

I would have to say that i admire both SlotMonster and Rockycatt and the love that they have for both of their countries. I didnt know that much about your country SM and to be honest had never really paid much attention about it till now, you do have alot to be proud of in your nation and its history and i have learned alot frrom your link.

When i first saw your post, i was abit insulted to be honest again, but knowing you from this forum and the kindness in the way you post, i thought differently and dont think you meant it as a slap in the face toward our American vets.

We all should be proud of the service of our veterens from the past to the present and hope that our future generations will have no need for veterens of war.........ever..............laurie:)

I am sorry, rockycatt if you found my first post made you feel insulted, I didn't mean anything like that. I was just curious about it, because one of my american friends once stated it in his email. I asked him is that was true, and he responded "anyone know about that". So I decided to ask USA members, just to listen another opinion(s), no more no less. I didn't stated "I think that in the USA almost 3.000.000 homeless people and almost 750.000 of them are veterans". I clearly said, I asked "Is that true that in the USA almost 3.000.000 homeless people and almost 750.000 of them are veterans?"

"Thanks" means the same as "Thanks for your replies" or "Thanks for answering".

But I found your post very insulting, especially the phrase
also tell us what involvement there country has in keeping the peace when world disorder takes place
. Just imagine how it sounds for partiot civilian of the country, which lost 1/3 of its population in the War. According to Nazi plans, if they won - they would have erased (killed) 75% of Slavic population, and 25% would have left as slaves. Europe even wouldn't exist!

Do you know world history well, rockycatt? I doubt you know it. Or you know it, but you don't accept it, or something else... But I suggest you to read the facts before to know what you are talking about.

I can repeat, that I didn't want to hurt anyone, I just asked a question. And I'm feel sorry if anyone feel insulted about that.

195,827 Homeless veterans in 2006

I worked for the V.A. Hospital Administration at two of the largest u.s. hospitals. There are many many programs to assist homeless veterans and 99% of those that were discharged honorably including the National Guard members called into combat, are eligible for V.A. Medical Care. Those with service disabilities can qualify for unemployement if they meet the requirements. Those that are homeless have many programs that they can apply to.

The biggest problem is that most homeless, while better educated than non-veteran homeless, have mental illnesses or drug and alcohol dependency and that interfers in their ablility to contact the V.A. and apply for assistance. Many are unaware of what is available to them. That is a big failure of the current Veterans Administration Program. They need more outreach programs to identify these Veterans and assist them. Since most of those needing the most help can't help themselves.

Public Service employees, such as the Police could definately be more involved in this, as they often arrest these homeless veterans. Also, shelters could help to send them to the appropriate V.A. organizations for help.

Gee, with all the tax funds ACORN has received, one would think they should have been helping these individuals.

Good lord, it took YEARS, for the Government to admit that Vietnam Veterans may have been exposed to AGENT ORANGE, and that such exposure contributed to the many cancers, illnesses and mental defects of their children and themselves. I was in charge of the Agent Orange Registry as part of my Administrative Position. The registry was put into effect in approx. 1978.

To help the homeless veterans will take several things, first being evaluating their health and treating any conditions that are affecting their ability to maintain gainful employment. Second, if untreatable illnesses, a disability determination needs to be made to see if their mental illness or chemical dependency was caused in part or totally due to their military service. If they have a service disability they may be eligible for unemployment and other benefits and services to get them off the streets.

We can all help these veterans. When you have the opportunity, offer to take them to the nearest V.A. Hospital or notify the nearest V.A. Administration and ask for assistance.

This is about all anyone can do.

So True

In my state I feel a lot of the homeless are the mentally ill which I know we do not take care of sufficiently imo but how many are veterans I do not know.[/QUOTE

The fact that they are mentally ill is one reason they don't seek treatment at a V.A. Hospital. If family or friends don't help them get to the V.A. Hospital they likely will go untreated.

The V.A. has excellent programs for mental illness and drug dependency. Including methedone programs, in-patient and out-patient pychiatric care. First, the Veteran needs to seek treatment!

Lack of knowledge regarding all Government programs established to help those at poverty level, veterans and the like is the biggest reason these people don't receive assistance. Lets face it, how many families or individuals that are homeless or earn little have access to computers or televisions or any other meanings of staying informed or finding programs available to them? expanding Medicaid will not help unless an effort is made to inform the public on eligibility, etc. Most that fail to signup for Medicaid will end up in Emergency Rooms. The Hospital is going to receive very little if anything to treat them.

With all the "Federal Employees" you would think the State and Federal Government could have one central branch/location in large cities that can direct people to operate departments/offices.

Fed up with Government!

Funny how vast numbers of the population that are not as "needy" or helpless no how to "work the system" We have medicaid patients that pull-up driving brand new "cadillacs", go figure

I have a 75 year old aunt that has been living basically homeless and as a paranoid schizophrenic in the Boston area for years and because of our laws it is only possible to 'help' her by begging her to voluntarily put herself in a hospital and then they will only keep her for 72 hours. Unless of course she hurts someone I guess. It's very sad and I think of her often and actually don't even know if she's alive or dead since 2003. She used to call us collect a couple times a year and we'd send her money to whatever address she'd give us but never anything permanent. It's a very sad and frustrating situation and there but for the grace of God go I....
