An excerpt:
...So we are left with a country more deeply divided than at any time since the Civil Rights and Vietnam eras of the 1960s. And it is important to remember how those turned out, if we want some idea of what this election will mean for legal gaming.

The spotlight of media and culture has always been focused on the anti-war and other Baby Boomer movements of the 1960s. But the reality is that the political fights were won by the Establishment; it was the Republican, Richard Nixon, who won the election in 1968 and again in 1972.

This resulted in a major boost to legal gambling...

Read the article and tell me what you think. :D

The question in my mind is whether Adelson will be able to influence the thinking of a maverick like Trump, despite his election donations.

My personal view is that Trump is more pragmatist than ideologue and it could go either way.

no quick change coming

I would not expect to see quick changes to anything. The real power is in the house & senate so it remains to be seen how they will get along with Trump. At best they would get rid of the UIGEA but all that really does is leave it up to the states to decide. Some states will quickly pass legislation to make on line gaming illegal and others will drag their feet for decades.

I expect that I will be long dead an buried before anything meaningful happens with on line gaming.

For one thing, there are a number of republicans who back the 10th amendment which protects the sovereignty of the individual states. As long as we have these guys on our side, Addelson won't get anywhere.

This is one reason the legalization of marijuana is starting to sweep through the country. Each state should be given the opportunity to make its own decision. I think you will see more of this (I hope) with a Republican government.

The guy is best friends with Steve Wynne the same guy who fought to ban online gaming and the same guy who spoke publicaly and stated he would do everything in his power to stop it. The same has been said from many other of trumps vegas friends.

Trump wants to make murica great again. Ya need money for that. So we will see how he actually acts when the lobbyist and best friends put pressure on him

Trump is a lot of things but he is a businessman first. So it makes sense to allow states to decide on their own if they want legal and regulated online gambling which would bring them (the state) and the government more tax revenue which to my mind is a win-win situation.

This Adelson guy though could get sneaky and lobby for an add on for a bill passing through congress to outlaw online gambling completely. I think the UIGEA was passed in this sneaky way.

It could go either way and lets face it even if individual states were given the power who knows how long it would take for them to decide. I remember a few years back a major argument in South Florida for a Las Vegas style casino to be built. In the end it wasn't and this is a part of the state that is Democrat and has legal brick and mortar casinos both Indian and Racinos.

Also I think there is going to be major trouble in the coming years with the legalization of pot in many states as I think the Federal Government considers pot illegal. So unless the Feds change their stance on this there is gonna be trouble. I don't live in the US but used to and maybe imbibed a few times in my life so I have no horse in this race but I think it ought to be legal.

So it can go either way. Personally I am for live and let live and hate Nanny Governments telling me they know what's best for me. Time will tell.

But Trump is on record as stating he wants online gambling legalized across the USA as soon as possible.

On the whole it looks like good news for people in the business of gambling in America because you can expect a former owner of casinos to be sympathetic.
Trump owned multiple casinos in Atlantic City.

Trump in an interview as president elect said that he wants states to make their own abortion laws.
He may allow states to make their own gambling laws.

In the republican debates Jeb Bush said Trump approached him about building a casino in Florida.
Trump gave his typical reply: "If I wanted a casino in Florida I would have got it."
From this it seems Trump isn't too proud of his laissez-faire approach to gambling.

But Trump is on record as stating he wants online gambling legalized across the USA as soon as possible.

As did (at various times in the past) Adelson and Wynn - both dabbled briefly with online gambling some time back before switching their opinions.

I'm all for states' rights and it certainly is a powerful argument that works for us. New Jersey in particular is at last starting to produce more interesting revenues from regulated online gambling, and that could encourage other states. There are a number of states still interested in the internet either for full-on gambling or lottery-related selected forms of it.

Adelson is already reportedly working with Republican junior Senator Tom Cotton on a new bill which contains most of Adelson's thus far unsuccessful RAWA bans...there has been recent speculation that Cotton (co-sponsored by Sens. Graham and Lee) may try to attach this to the coattails of a major appropriations bill in the lame duck session of Congress this year. So we're approaching a danger period again.

But as I opined before, Trump appears to be a strong-willed and pragmatic leader, and he could earn himself political and civil support by throwing his weight behind Amendment 10.

The opportunity to do that could (among others) come through the drive by New Jersey and its allies (now including the AGA) to do away with PASPA and liberalise the US sports betting market.

Here's another view:

If I was a betting man, which I am not  my money would be on Trump relaxing the laws on gambling while making things very favourable for his backers to prosper at the same time. Trumps main aim seems to be to run America more like a business than ever before so to not relax gambling laws would fly in the face of that aim.

Good op-ed.

I disagree with Rose on one point - Trump is strongly anti-trust/anti-monopoly; for example, he favors the elimination of state-level health insurance ring-fencing, so that if he had his way, Americans in any state would be able to get health insurance offered from any other state.

I am optimistic about a Trump administration's approach to online gaming, though I wish we'd be looking forward to a Sanders presidency. Oh well.

I wouldnt be if I were you. Mike Pence (Vice President) is incredibly opposed to online gambling. And what makes it worse is he will be the person most involved in any decision making. Hes also a huge supporter of RAWA and years ago even wrote a letter to Congressional Delegates opposing online gaming

You can't be serious. Donald Trump is in charge, not Mike Pence, and Pence will do a complete 180 if Trump barks at him. If he doesn't want to do that, he will be shut out. Make no mistake - Pence is NOT going to be making any decisions.

I guess you arent too familiar how things work.

Let me help.

When it comes to issues such as this, the VP is usually the one involved while the President is involved in more serious issues.

Trump will not be barking at Mike Pence. This isnt a rodeo. And no, Mike Pence will not be shut out.

Mike Pence, like every other VP, will be making many decisions.

Mike Pence will not do a 180. One of his strongest views is online gambling should be banned.

The VP is completely against it, all Trumps best friends who he has personal and business interests in, are against it.

Online gambling will not be legalized under this admin imo

You can hope of course but I wouldnt get them too high

Although I do wish you americans luck even though it is very bleek.

Done with you. Cheers.

Trump is a businessman by nature, and it seems to me if he has to choose between the ethical issues (I don't mean the casino industry, it can be whatever) and the profit, he'll choose the latter.

I agree with you, however Trump doesn't have interests in online gambling, nor his friends. Also there is not strong pressure from the population for relaxing gambling law..so why change anything?

As far as I know, casinos pay taxes to the government and, what's more, winnings are taxed too, which generates a huge profit to the government.

Legalizing online gambling would not prevent the US from still collecting taxes on winnings. The UKGC charges fees to online casinos to operate in their country, the US could do the same. It's a much larger market than the UK, I'm sure casinos would jump at the chance to enter the US market again.

Personally, I think I'll probably die of old age before online gambling is legalized - especially in my hypocritical bible belt state -- no matter who's president.

do you think that legalization necessarily means happiness? in my country gambling is restricted in all forms, so I have to use workarounds to play online. But generally I feel satisfied when I reach the world of online games. And sometimes I even like these difficulties, because if I don't have it, I wouldn't have experienced such joy like this and appreciate the chance so much. so sometimes the problems are not as bad as it's painted, do you agree with me?
