NJ Panel send Internet Gambling bill to Senate for vote

The hearing Tuesday before the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee included the usual arguments by representatives of the horse racing industry, who contend their exclusion from the millions of dollars in profits envisioned from internet gambling will kill their sport.

"It supports one industry at the expense of another industry," said Thomas Luchento, president of the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey.

The bill now goes to the full Senate for a vote. A companion measure is currently before the Assembly Regulatory and Oversight Committee, which is considering the need for a constitutional amendment on the issue....

I really don't see what the horse racing people are on about... I mean... we (USA) have been able to bet on the ponies online for ... well... forever... Haven't we?

I may be mistaken, but I believe the horse racing folk argue that if online gambling is made fully legal people will stay at home and bet, not come to the track and do it... which hurts their bottom line.

If thats correct, then IMO they're being very short-sighted and a little greedy. Here in Ireland people are free to do both, and last time I was at leapordstown race course the thousands of other people there with me seemed quite happy to be there. If it's hot hurting the pockets here, I cant see how it would 'kill their sport' in the US.

I think the idea with the horseracing industry is this - most horsetrack now have or are trying to get, casinos. So if folks can play online, they won't go to a B&M casino. You can bet your behind that if the casinos at the tracks were getting a cut, they would be all well and good.

The big English gambling sites have just about taken over the horseracing industry in the US as far as the really big stuff.

Betfair owns TVG and some part of Hollywood Park. Somehow the Daily Racing Form and Churchill Downs are also tied to British gambling biggies.

My thoughts on this is that they were getting in now in the hopes that sooner or later, online gambling would be legalized and they wouldn't have to go thru the whole process to come online in the US.

Well, for heavens sake... guess the horse racing industry just wants their cake and eat it, too. They don't want anyone to bet on anything BUT the ponies. What crap... Not everyone lives near a track... but if they'd put casinos at the one horse track (no, I take that back, it may just be a dog track, now) within a day's drive from me... well... guess where I'd be... But I'm dreaming. Gambling is EE-ville and illegal in Alabama... oh... unless you bet the ponies. LOL

Casinos are evil in Texas also. We have 4 horse track in Texas. Guess who lobbies most against when it comes up for vote? Louisiana and New Mexico. Online gambling is illegal in Louisiana. Not sure about New Mexico.

We have casinos in every state around. Shreveport is a 45 minute drive from my house and I don't think I have been there in 3-4 months.

Hi I just wanted to comment about the cruelty to animals comment- I'm not looking for a fight I just needed to speak up. My family owed race horses up until the day my father died. He loved each and every horse he owned. He constantly checked on them he hired a full time vet to make sure his horses were happy and healthy. When they were done racing and time to retire instead of selling them overseas where yes people buy the meat or to a dog food company, he had a ranch that was staffed 24-7. The horses were there, they could run around and were taking care of better then some children in 3rd world countries. My father also express rules about whipping of the horses, he hired and used only 2 jockeys that felt the same as him- his thought was if the horses truly loves to run they would not need to be whipped. He won many stake races and he loved those horses- not all owners abuse there animals. I have to say as well his horses loved to race, you could see it in there eyes, it was natural to them my dad had a knack for picking good horses, he respected them and you could see the horses respected him back. There was one horse that did get hurt it was his knee, he was told to kill the horse he said no, hired a specialist spent close to 50 grand on the horse and surgery just to retire his horse on the ranch. He said I wouldn't shoot on of my kids because of a bad knee (thank god because I just had knee surgery) I'm not gonna shoot one of my horses. So I understand your point but please not all in the industry are bad.

Now about the Horse Industry and gambling. They fight because the horse racing industry lives on the racing purse- or win for that race- the industry has become very expensive, but the purses are not getting bigger. Most track owners and in IL we have on of the biggest asses I've ever met here, wont adjust the purses on a race been holding back trying to get a piece of the pie. they want slot machines at the tracks here and if you read the headlines months ago that same ass of an owner is the same one that started and ended up putting our governor in jail. Did he do it I don't know, but the horse racing industry bribe to get slots at track is what started it all. See the industry screwed themselves along time ago by opening off track betting parlors, they were racking it in then when casinos came they lost a lot to the casinos and are now trying to get a piece of the pie.
