New crackdown on gambling ads...

Not wanting advertising that primarily targets children is understandable, but preventing anyone who even appears to be under 25 from appearing in an ad sounds pretty excessive/authoritarian. If it were 18 or the legal gambling age, then all right that makes some sense. But 25?

Is there a similar age restriction over there on alcohol advertisement? Not sure that whether that would be good either but just curious if they're consistent.

They probably say 25+ because the celebs that are 18-25 commonly relate to kids. Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendez et al all have millions of followers mostly in the age range of 11-15. So I see what they are trying to do there.

Yes, in Canada there is, and for smoking too. If you don't look 25 they will ask. Signs have to show that in all the stores too.

Yes - in the UK most shops have a “challenge 25 policy” whereby anyone who looks under 25 is asked for ID to prove that they are over 18. At 37 I’ve been asked for ID when buying wine - I took it as a compliment!

M@S challenged 25 if you look under 25 you will be asked for ID before alcohol is sold..

Gambling advertising needs to go the same way as tobacco especially in these lean times most have cut freebies yet they still manage to spend money on prime time TV /billboards advertising..

Let's be realistic these restrictions won't effect any of us who already gamble unfortunately it's the mugs coming behind us who will fall foul.

Just had this from one affiliate group:

(UK) New guidance on advertising: protecting children and young people - in force from 1st April 2019 Posted on: Feb 14 2019
The new guidance on advertising released by CAP UK and by The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) being enforced from April 1st 2019.

For xxxxxxxxx to remain compliant, we require affiliates to make sure that if they use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc
n the UK – that its feeds are not being viewed by children and young people of under 18 years. We expect you as an affiliate to use the platform
tools available to you, to restrict under 18s’ from accessing your social media content.

If this is not possible, or you cannot guarantee that children and under 18´s are not able to view your content, we expect all UK facing content on
social platforms to be removed.
As an affiliate, it is your responsibility as our marketing partner to help us make sure that you comply with CAP
UK´s Gambling specific guidance and codes of practice. The latest version of CAP can be found here:

drive.google.com/drive/folders/1PHfSW6UyRxdWMpWTjQgCuZy7gqw1em7N?usp=sharing

Also, make sure your content has no specific appeal to children and references to youth culture.
Streamers (Twitch) / Influencers

It is very important that you are aware of your audience data such as age breakdown and that your follower-base is not predominantly under 18 and does not comprise more than 25% of the audience. If you wish to continue streaming for xxxxx as a brand in the future, we would need this information from you and confirmed as accurate as soon as possible. Please confirm this with your account manager as to exactly what we require.

Thank you!

So how does a streamer know if no more than 25% of viewers are under 18? Surely it should be none!

I've read through the new guidance and see nothing new at all. Pretty much everything the guidance mentions was already there in the CAP codes, all it has done is put it together in a new document and tightened it slightly.
No doubt we will see knee jerk reactions from shit affiliate managers who couldn't be arsed to read the CAP codes previously and now scramble to ensure everyone is compliant.

If you think bonuses are bad now, how do you think they would be if casinos were getting say 5% of sign ups as they currently do? No advertising at all would not be good for the industry at all.

But there is still 25 year olds that look like they are 18/19 in appearance lol. So that might cause some eyebrows and headaches too. If they then choose to use celebs that look younger as a workaround. But either-way. The whole purpose of this ban is because they are trying to stop the ads from appealing to kids. Which is totally the right approach, but the big companies will always find workarounds or loopholes. The best approach might actually be to ban ads in their entirety on TV. As for online, there is already a lot of laws and rules for online ads. Especially in terms with google adsense etc etc. So they are already on top of the game.

But sometimes there has been occasions when kids do see the gambling ads. I mean obviously online is always going to be harder to police because some websites that get a lot of visitors might be ran by 1 or 2 people, so it would then be down to them to put measures in place if those websites display adult ads on those sites. In other words they have to have age check verification systems in place. Otherwise they risk getting fined.

But hey kids can still gamble in arcades in Blackpool and other seaside resorts. They also can gamble with virtual goods in online games. Wont mention the games but there is a shit tonne of them.

To be fair. Some parents should also take more steps if they want to police what their kids can see and do online. Some parents just do not care, others are completely over the top. Some are in the middle. But kids being kids will always always find ways to get around blocks etc etc. Like when I was a kid. I started smoking when I was 11. and gambled since I was younger too, on trips to Blackpool. My parents was very very strict. They would not even let me cross the street alone up until I was 12/13. Obviously when I was at school that was different as they was not there to watch over me like when I was at home etc etc.

And my point was and is, is that I always found ways around things. Getting cigarettes from school friends. I was close to a teacher who helped by giving me dinner money, So that basically helped pay for my cigarettes. As for the gambling. I did talk about this many many months ago in some posts on this forum. All the trips we took to Blackpool pretty much every weekend.

Anyway that was all I have to say. Maybe a bit of topic. Maybe some might enjoy reading some of my backstory and my opinion, some might not which is totally cool too :)

Well one way to make certain is that you make all your content viewable to adults only on Youtube and Twitch through the account settings. At least you can demonstrate to you target adults only.

Not sure how this works with Twitter though.

i also think that the whole advertising strategy should be looked at. i mean and please correct me if im wrong. but i would see it as someone has a problem if they need to play roulette waiting for the bus or train rather than 'light entertainment'.

You obviously never waited forever on a bus in Glasgow lol. Don't play while waiting be to late to play when you eventually get home:laugh:

That possibly won't be enough, Facebook/Twitter age gate isn't deemed sufficient for certain types of gambling advertising, so I very much doubt youtube would be either. Not exactly sure how you would ensure that, especially from an affiliate perspective, but thats how it is. Had a disagreement with GUTS about this not that long ago.

If you set your Youtube account to "age restricted" it prevents the videos them being found if not logged in. An account has to be created and the user has to confirm they are over 18 years of age before they can view the videos.

It at least demonstrates you are not targeting non adults. What else can you do to prevent children seeing them?

I understand you run an affiliate website yourself? How do you prevent non adults accessing it?

You do not have permission to view link Log in or register now.

As I said, I don't know what you can do. It's not about affiliate websites though, its about social media, age gates don't work as there is no additional checks other than 'click here to say you are over 18'. I'll see if I can dig the link out for the children's characters stuff.

Having checked the document that Videoslots linked to, the guidance applies to all advertising, including websites? See paragraph 5.1?
