London. Nov 16 The UK government plans to restrict the number of giant Las Vegas-style casinos that can be built across Britain to eight as the industry's gambling laws face their biggest shake-up in 40 years, Richard Caborn told the Gambling Bill Standing Committee today.

Tony Blair's government has proposed the limit on regional casinos in a change to its Gambling Bill, which has faced fierce opposition from politicians and health advocates who have warned of the risks of soaring numbers of gambling addicts.

The backlash against the government's reform plans means initial suggestions from Blair that there could be 20 to 40 regional casinos built have been dramatically reined back.

Richard Caborn said in a statement: We have taken careful note of concerns raised during the Bills second reading debate about the casino proposals. There was a large measure of support for the view that the licensing controls proposed in the Bill, working alongside the planning system, would not on their own be strong enough to guard against the proliferation of a kind of gambling facility hitherto untested in this country, or the location of regional casinos in unsuitable areas.
