Man buys half-ton pickup with half-ton of spare change
Posted Dec 24 2007, 07:57 PM by Karen Datko
We can hear the gears grinding in the minds of personal-finance bloggers everywhere as they process the following information: Paul Brant, 70, of Frankfort, Ind., used about $25,000 in spare quarters and dollar coins he had accumulated over 13 years to help pay for a $26,670 2008 Dodge Ram half-ton pickup last week. Sheriff's deputies provided security as Brant drove the rolls of coins to the dealership. Brant, who works for Chrysler, decided to give his collection of spare pennies, nickels and dimes to his wife, Judy.

No, dear bloggers, Brant did not deposit his spare change periodically in a high-yield online savings account. He kept it in piggy banks and old cans and jugs. We don't know how he is paying the balance owed on the truck, but we know he could have paid the entire amount and had lots left over if he had deposited or invested the money and let compound interest work for him. (You may even be speculating that Brant could be living comfortably -- in retirement -- if he had different personal-finance habits.)

That apparently isn't Brant's way. He bought himself a truck and his wife a car 13 years ago, again with accumulated spare change. His unusual savings plan was noted by readers of the Journal and Courier of Lafayette, Ind. "If anything, the longer he held this change with 0 interest, he was potentially losing money," a reader names "Zoso" commented. Reader "lillyalex2003" said maybe Brant's method works best for him. "I think the point should be that this gentlemen knew he wanted a truck and saved for it, whatever the method, and was able to pay for a good portion of it."
.................im off to count all my spare change:D..............laurie

I say start saving your change lol
It's a great story for the guy.

Weird Facts: Man Buys A New Truck With Spare Change He Saved For 13 Years
weird facts
(AP) FRANKFORT, Ind. - Paul Brant considers himself a penny pincher, but his savings in quarters and dollar coins really paid off.

Brant, 70, used more than $25,000 in change to help buy a new Dodge Ram half-ton pickup truck Friday _ 13 years after buying another truck with spare change.

"(The old truck) didnt have four-wheel drive, and living in the country, I figured I better get a new one to help get me through the snow," he said.

Brant said he was raised to be thrifty. His father always paid in cash and saved up loose change to take vacations.

Brant has been storing his change for years, and estimated he had about $26,000 in coins for Fridays purchase. In 1994, he bought a Dodge pickup and a Dodge Neon using about $36,000 in quarters.

"As long as you dont put your hands back in the till, it really adds up," he said.

Brant stored his change in coffee cans, water jugs and piggy banks over the years, and was escorted by sheriffs deputies as he brought the rolled coins to the dealership.

A Mike Raisor Chrysler Dodge and Jeep employee who sold Brant the truck said the dealership called in an armored car to count and handle the coins.

"No bank wants to take them," Keith Gephart said.

DO you guys remember some person in the late 70's early 80's doing the same thing with a garbage can full of pennies? I lived in IL at the time and remember that being in the news. I always said I would do that too but I always end up going to coinstar when Im at about $80-$100 LOL

once every 6 months i take and clean all my purses out and count out the change and then ill gather up all my pennies ive collected and you may laugh but i sometimes end up with 2 coffee cans of coins and then im off to the coinstar machine where i have around 150.00 to 200.00 depending on what my daughters taken out :D..and i have found a 20.00 bill or two ive found inside some grocery slips ...you never know what you may have when you look hard enough..................laurie:)

one time, before i did direct deposit for my wages, i found a paycheque from two months prior for a couple hundred when cleaning my room. ch-ching! and i "coloured up" 15 bucks in pennies the other month.

happy tip: roll your coin and take it to a gas station for bills (or deposit at your bank) at face value rather than an automated machine that usually levies a fee.

special bonus tip: the plastic snap-closure type rolls leave no question that a roll contains the correct number of coins and are easy to just pour coins into for less hassle in counting/rolling change.

You know in all my years, I have never found lost or forgotten money in jeans or a purse or anything. Im kind of OCDish when it comes to my money though.....I drive Rich crazy . Funny thing is..I never did the checking to the penny, I always round off and dont use change to make up for ATM fees. It works out pretty even, but i do online banking and check it everyday, sometimes twice a day (ocdish thing lol)

i used to let the kidds when they were smaller keep all the change they could find in my purses, ect until they got older now its all mamas money:D......................laurie

hah! Good luck! I remember about 10 years ago, I tried to do that, and the )(*#@&$@ wouldn't even take it. Too bad the manager wasn't on duty that day...I was pissed! My whole argument was the fact that it's LEGAL TENDER, and they should be required by LAW to take it - rolled or not.

It's not like the good ol' days anymore where you could take rolled change anywhere to cash it in...as long as you had your name and number written on the roll!

Don't all banks have coin counting machines??? Hell, the casinos do :p

the fact that it's rolled eliminates the need to count the change. especially in the type of rollers mentioned in my special bonus tip. the paper rollers could easily be shorted by one or two units, but with the transparent plastic preformed to the correct size, it's guaranteed to be correct unless the rollers are from a different country where money has a different thickness.

i mentioned a gas station because i work at one, and places like that are always in need of change anyway. and a bank should bloody well take them as money is all they deal in. i'm certain they'd let me colour up 100x$5 into 5x$100, so why not 1000x$0.01 into 1x$10.00?

if i can't pay in coin, i'm going to start refusing coin back with my change. "you expect me to carry that coin around? nobody even accepts that crap anymore! round my change to the next higher bill, or charge me less!"

along that vein, canada (and probably US too) is debating eliminating the penny from currency. it's almost neighbourly to be rounding to a nickel instead of trifling with pennies, but i suspect businesses are going to round the price up every time, which is unacceptable in my eyes as a consumer. i strongly hope it doesn't get to that. maybe store shelves will be like those in germany and state the final after-tax price of the item ($5.70 instead of $4.99), and every item will end in 5 or 0. that's the only fair way to get rid of pennies without implicitly screwing people, that i can think of right now.
