Loss limits (bit of a rant)

Hi all,

so before Christmas I had a couple big wins on slingo and ended up with around £4k in my account on one site. I'd actually only deposited £40 originally so I was extremely lucky. I took the opportunity to place some higher stakes on a couple slots as I don't usually get to do that due to deposit limits etc. I figured what's the harm in playing winnings. I did play around £1k back which I realise is a lot, but I was happy enough with it as a one off. Still 3k profit.

Cue several gambling safety emails from the site and missed phone calls. They put a loss limit on my account of £250 a month. I finally ended up talking to them on the phone (I was happy at the time with the limits but they kept ringing me) so I wasn't asking them at the time to raise anything.

Still they asked me SO many intrusive questions. The guy was nice enough and he did say I don't need to answer them, but still. Asked me how long I'd been gambling for, why I used the time-out feature a lot, why I withdrew in increments instead of all in one go (WTF), what my job was, how much I earn a month. We got cut off in the end so the limit still stands after all that (!) because apparently we're not done yet. I still have to ring them to change the limit. I'm thinking of telling them to take a flying leap and close my account (I've withdrawn all the winnings now and am up with the site) as it's obvious they want SOW to even raise the £250pm loss limit.

The thing that's so dumb to me is the "we noticed your staking activity increased" messages-well yeah because I had a decent win, fairly obvious. They knew I'd only deposited £40 so why do they want to know how much I earn? It's like you can't have a big win because only what you earn is taken into account regardless of deposit amounts.

Fair enough if they said "we don't want you to lose your winnings", but not asking me all about my work for a £40 deposit just because I got lucky. Anyway, just wanted to know what you guys thought-reasonable or not?

TLDR played some winnings back and got loss limits imposed and have to send in SOW to lift them.

Operators have to err on the side of caution, just looking at the past number of sizeable 'penalty packages' levied by the UKGC on operators found to have breach RG and AML guidelines.

How you play is no different to the vast majority of players. Certainly how I used to play. Sadly though the UK is now at a stage, that you are unable to breathe near an online casino without a raft of intrusive questions coming your way. :-(

Totally agree.
I get it with many operators. One said they'd noticed my bet per round increased, my argument is who cares, I am inside my deposit limit.

Yeah it's frustrating. I do get them erring on the side of caution but they could see I hadn't deposited in two weeks and was in profit with the site. Nothing else should matter. Looks like I'll be closing my account as I'm not going through the rigmarole of sending in SOW. Also got a recommendation of how much disposable income a month they think players should spend on gambling (I think they said 20% but don't quote me). Despite the fact it's one of my main leisure activities and I spend little money on other stuff- don't drink, smoke, go out a lot etc. nanny state indeed!

For anyone who is interested in what they want for SOW-

SOW.webp

I'm just stunned they have winnings from other companies down when playing their own sites winnings triggered the loss limit and SOW in the first place

You see that there ⬆️ is for me just as effective as being signed up with Gamstop. If anything it is more robust and secure than anything Gamstop does. It provides me with no desire whatsoever to request for my self exclusion and enrolment with Gamstop to come to an end.
Couldn't agree more. Having to show one operator your account history with another operator if you've had a big win 🤣.
They'll be wanting my shoe size next.
