Jersey senate committee passes online gambling legislation
4 April 2012
By Vin Narayanan

A senate committee in New Jersey voted Tuesday to allow Atlantic City casinos to offer online gambling services to New Jersey residents.

The bill approved by the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee (SBA) allows all forms of gambling allowed in Atlantic City to be offered online, requires all the equipment used to offer online gaming be housed in Atlantic City and sets a 10 percent tax on Internet gross gaming revenue.

Land-based gross gaming revenue is taxed at a rate of 8 percent.

Gov. Chris Christie vetoed similar legislation last year because it helped subsidize New Jersey's horse racing industry, didn't specifically address the issue of banning Internet cafes for the purpose of gambling and that the expansion of gambling beyond Atlantic City required a voter referendum.

The bill approved this week addresses some of those issues. It provides no additional money for the horse racing industry and prohibits the marketing of online gaming by anyone other than the casinos offering it.

And by requiring the gaming equipment to be located in Atlantic City, bill sponsors Sen. Ray Lesniak and Sen. Jim Whelan hope Christie will no longer view online gambling as an expansion of gaming beyond Atlantic City.

The bill also contains language that will allow New Jersey to accept bets from places outside of New Jersey if it is legal to do so.

Eleven of the 13 members of the SBA Committee voted to approve the online gaming bill. Sen. Paul Sarlo, the committee's chairman, abstained from the vote. Sarlo represents a district that includes East Rutherford, home of the Meadowlands Race Track.

Sen. Anthony Bucco did not vote on the measure

Does this mean that you have to live in New Jersey to play at the online casinos?

I read where Christie is trying to make deals with other states to be able to play multistates just like our lottery is. So, I think it just might be happening for us all soon. Schedule is for september I think. I will try to find the news article I saw this and Nevada trying to force this to happen more quickly also.

Interesting that was included in the bill. Very clouded as to what will be allowed. Just horse betting? Or are they preparing themselves to allow the NJ casino's to go online..........and only with them?

Seems all want a piece of the action. For chirst sakes, let the USA player play where they want to. But then again, the USA government realized they were missing out on revenue.

Would love to know the government connection and political affiliates to whomever sponsored this.

True, but since the introduction of spellcheckers there's really no reason for it.

Nothing personal against rocky or anyone else. I just see it as a respect thing....if someone can't be bothered presenting their views in a legible fashion then why should anyone take them seriously? If spellcheck wasn't around then sure, but it is and I don't think it is too much to expect people to use something resembling proper English. Members often complain about posters not using paragraphs or full stops etc, and it is the same thing IMO.

Anyway.....back to the topic....

Wms will want very clear legislation. Aussies can't play and it isn't even illegal here, even though every other provider is happy to cater to us.

I was almost going to thank you until you made light of people with a mental illness that require "meds" (note: no comma required)

What I said has NOTHING to do with a "spell slip". We all make slips. I'm talking about entire posts looking like they were written by....well anyway, as I said, it's common courtesy in a forum. When humans are speaking in two letter words and "ugh" sounds in 100 years, just like they did millions of years ago, you can claim the knighthood as a founding crusader for the cause :D

I don't want to derail any further so apologies to the other participants and enjoy the topic of leagle gambing in new jersy.

It makes so much sense it's not even funny. The potential tax revenue generated should be enough of a reason.

All I can say is, with the Feds staying out of this and letting each state set up or disallow online gambling, we're in for a royal mess. Guidlines (T&C) will NOT be consistent from one state to the other.

But congrats to those who may get to play online in the states before they get too old and gray to know what a slot machine is. LOL

OK here is a confusing question. I'm in IL right now its illegal to play at certain casinos(IL was one of the band states) however since we just went live with our online lottery does that now make it legal to gamble at casinos on line? So would I then be able to play at NJ online casino?

What is going to happen as I read it , is that once it has been passed and approved, New Jersey will be putting in for interstate licensing to allow states that want to join in the online gambling through New Jersey. It will not be automatic. It will be by invitation and licensing by New Jersey. That is how I am understanding it.

Dude what's your problem? You know full well what Rocky is saying. I see you have a habit of provoking members. A lot of these threads do very well until you start commenting on them. SMH

Thank you rtgkiller. At least your comments above aren't a derail or anything

I would say "welcome to casinomeister" but I don't think I need to, do I? I have a feeling we have met before.

But, Nifty, if you stop taking your baby aspirin you might have a heart attack!!

This is a first, small step, towards legal internet gambling in the states. Don't assume for a second its going further any faster though- I'm guessing ten years before the US /really/ knows if this is going to go forward in a way that's great for players.

It is a step though, forward at that! Its being discussed. Its up to you folks in NJ to get the word to your local government. Let them know you want it, and you're willing to pay for it. :p Then they'll be all ears!
