I'm thinking languages again and how to solve problems for us non native English speakers.
Really I have a different problem but it might be useful for others too.
I'm sending messages to Swedish people in English and that's embarrasing

There are a lot of Scandinavian reps here but who lives in Malta for example.
Many times people don't write where they are from at all, they just live around the corner somewhere:rolleyes:
That's okey, but what language are they speaking normally? Which language are they good at?

So I was thinking that maybe when people are filling in their profile there could be somewhere to fill in which language they are speaking too.
Is that a good or possible idea?

Yes, that's a very good idea. In fact there are some language packs for the forum which I have not implemented. Perhaps I can get this going in the near future.

But if not, listing a "preferred" language is not hard at all.

What do you mean by language packs? I have no idea what is possible to do on a website like this.

This is such a great place to learn English in, since everyone is so helpful. I'm a living proof of that.
A funny thing now is that I don't even want to be or read in a Swedish forum. I can hardly understand what they are talking about :D

Funny thing I once heard about Americans and the English language. Americans assume anyone can understand English if they just speak it slow enough and loud enough.

It sounds funny but I see that being done all the time, "Can you tell me how to get to Main Street?...How to get to M A I N S T R E E T?...C A N Y O U T E L L M E H O W...ahhh, never mind."

Doesn't work in written form.

Who knows, ten years from now we maybe not are writing in this forum. We maybe are using screens talking instead :eek2:
Everyone at the same time. Thinking about how some people are behaving here it will surely be hilarious :D

Tirilej - this site is easy to communicate on as there are only 2 languages spoken - English language and foul language...:)

:D hehe. I was gonna put thanks on all your posts here. But think I will just comment instead. I fully agree with you guys here :p

English isn't my first language and sometimes in the US (especially in the south) I had a hard time to understand some people so I'd make them repeat, but people would just repeat louder which didn't help much. I'm not deaf, they just spoke too fast. :)

One time in New Mexico I was trying to order a burger at Carl's Jr. and I'd not understand a friggin' word of what the cashier was trying to tell me. He was a Native American teenager and he'd speak so fast and just mumbles his words, it was simply impossible for a foreigner like me to understand.

After a few times of asking him to repeat (and him repeating louder and louder) I told him "listen, I don't understand what you're trying to tell me so I'd like a cheeseburger, medium fries and a medium Coke, thank you" and handed him a $10 bill. He looked at me like I came from another planet and gave me my food. After that I realized that it's not normal that he could understand me but I couldn't understand him, it should be the other way around!

Okay - it's been done. You can fill out two fields in your user profile - Preferred Language and Language Skills:
Link Outdated / Removed

These will also show up in the member list once I get that squared away. :D

Bryan, Bryan what are you asking? :eek2:

Thanks for trying to make it easier, but what people are suppose to fill in is what language they are speaking. Their native.
That doesn't make me closer to find out what language they are speaking if I don't see where they are from.

For me I could put in English there, since I know some, but if you have someone from Sweden that lives in Malta what is he suppose to write?

I'm just a little confused as usual. Explain your thoughts please :D

Okay - I've changed "preferred language" to "Native Language". Hope that is more precise.

I love it when people are listening :notworthy

I suppose it's room enough to fill in more than one language anyway, but the native language is the most important.
I will move to another country in a few weeks too so I'm happy this is done now.

Changing the question to native language from preferred language changed my answer to English from Pig Latin. :)

You also can fill in Language skills skiny so why not put it there?
I saw someone were speaking Drunkanese so it will probably be a few more languages on this forum then it was before :D
