I Need Feedback On Stop Smoking Tips Please !!

Well went to my Dr. yesterday for my physical , mamogram was great along with everything else except I was told I have stage 2 COPD , more toward stage 1 and that I need to quit smoking.

I do not smoke but 10 to 15 cigs a day , good health and heck I don't even inhale all the way , its more of a mind over matter for me I think but I just can't quit. I hate medications and have heard of ecigs blowing up , chantex making you want to commit suicide, just looking for some other tips instead of cold turkey or meds.

Any tips on how you quit would be so much appriciated as I do want quit but the will power is lacking. I have been scared since she told me and then I have talked with others in the medical feild who say that this test can be off.

Smoking is not good for you , we all know this but it is my only vice except gambling, well maybe a glass or two of wine a week but thats it.

I am worried about this COPD , been trying to look up things I can do , I breathe great , no wheezing and coughing , good shape but was told there is nothing you can do to fix it , this I do not believe.

Have had allergies bad this year , was wondering if this can have a play in it ?

Try new VIP electronic cigarette. They are a good safe brand no blow ups.

Mostly those you have heard about because people are silly charging over night. But by having spare batteries it will not be a problem.

I can't or not sure if allowed to link but try search for them on facebook or google.

I am on verge going back using them and wanna use the new one they have.

My only suggestion is not to be so hard on yourself. Smoking is a drug and a disgusting habit, me myself would love to get rid of it. Take one day of a time, allowing yourself only the morning, mid day, and the evening smoke. It's a good start my friend <3

It's the best decision you will ever make Laurie....healthwise, and cost wise ($25 a packet here for 30).

Cold turkey worked for me almost 11 years ago. Avoid foods and drink that you normally have with a ciggie. I found hot chocolate makes them taste awful afterwards, and foods with garlic in them and milky drinks....so choose them over coffee or other "smoking" foods. It's not forever.

I can't give you any tips as I went cold turkey, like Nifty. Had to as my SO has COPD as well as a rare lung problem. So when he was diagnosed, my cigs went in the trash.

Best thing that ever happened to me. You will be surprised just how much better you feel, how good food tastes. You will get over the cravings, just make sure and watch for triggers. Mine was playing slots, online or casino. LOL! Not sure all the hard candy I ate was good for me either but at least I got rid of the smokes.

I had excellent success with the Nicorette gum (I buy the generic version)... It's work in similar manner without the bad chemicals in the cigarette. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I would just chew the gum. Eventually I tapered down and then instead of the Nicorette gum, I would chew regular gum until eventually I didn't feel the need for that. It gives you the same amount of nicotine in the beginning and then you slowly wean off of it until you're on a lower milligram and then eventually you're off it for good. I went a bit longer than what it said - about 6 months in total, but during those 6 months I wasn't inhaling all that crap so it gives you an immediate feeling of doing something healthier for yourself. That was 4 years ago and I haven't gone back yet!

I'm one of the lucky ones I never started smoking (well except for a few) so never had to quit. My whole family smoked at some stage and all my friends at age sixteen were doing it (so the temptation was there). When I go out I get offered a cigs all the time, I'll say no thanks but my friend/s will have one. I just never got anything from them that pot or benzos wouldnt have done better. I've always said that I'd smoke but they just dont do anything for me.

I really got spooked about them two years ago when my dad had a heart attack and had to stop smoking. My sister smokes a pack every two days. Anyway my dad got hypnosis done and it really helped him out with quitting plus I noticed he physically wouldnt touch a pack (i dont know if that had to do with the hypnosis though). My sister said shes going to stop soon because they are planning another price increase in Australia.

Another "cold turkey" case here, Laurie. Many years ago now and I've never regretted it. Healthier, better sports and life performance (and no scent of tobacco!)

A word of caution - appetite improves (shows you how deleterious smoking is) and you have to discipline yourself to avoid putting on weight - a common problem but perhaps not as life-threatening as smoking.

I appreciate that some folks find it more difficult to give up than others (my daughter really struggled) but the effort is so worth it.

Not knowing what the acronym COPD is, I looked it up on the internet...this is some scary s*** and should be enough to make you throw that packet of smokes away immediately!

This helped with me too (although hot chocolate and a cig were MADE for each other LOL). The key for me was to identify what I did when smoking and change my habits. So for example, before, I'd be sitting by the PC, need a break and go make a cup of tea or coffeee and have a cig with it - they went hand-in-hand.

Instead, I put a cheap step machine and a bottle of water by my desk and every time I wanted that tea break, I did 3+ minutes on the step machine instead. I set myself targets....100 steps to start, upping to 150 after a week etc. the aim was not only to break the habit but get fitter too. It worked.

From about the same as you - 10-15 a day - to 0 overnight after solid smoking for 25 years. That was over 2 years ago and while I still like the smell, after a couple of weeks had passed and I felt myself getting fitter I wasn't tempted to even have a drag on a ciggie, even on a trip to Vegas 3 months after I quit (that was my acid test!). Nor since.

So yeah: change your habits to avoid doing the things you associate with a ciggie would be my advice also.

I trolled the Internet for help. There were a lot of ads for stopping smoking, for pills, patches, hypnosis, gums, etc.
None of these appealed to me and for a couple of hours, I thought it best to just cut down and smoke a few cigs a day.
My addiction was insisting I couldn't stop. Powerful stuff.

The uniqueness of this site is that it has interactive forums such as these at Casinomeister. You can rant and rave and get the support of other Quitsters. I never believed it would help me. Hi Laurie I have end stage COPD and I smoked for over 30 years. It was very hard for me to quit but now I have not smoked for 2 years. I tried a lot of things and it seemed like I would never be able to quit. I tried the patch, gum, e-cigs, hypnosis, just about everything you could think of. It was third time trying the patch that I finally quit. The patch's side effects for me were crazy vivid dreams. I think with me it was just never to give up trying to quit. In the long run pure determination and the want to attitude is what will work. COPD gets really bad if you continue to smoke. I can no longer walk up stairs and I am on oxygen 24/7 Good luck quitting and never give up.

I am trying to get two nieces and 1 nephew to quit - no luck so far.

It's the nicotine that creates the effect, but the act of smoking also creates a habit, and many smokers can't work with patches or gum because they don't know what to do with their hands in the redesigned "fag break". The E-Cig was designed to overcome this, and dispenses nicotine in the same way as a regular tobacco cig. The problem seems to be that they were launched, but not regulated in any way, so there are badly made versions that DO have the unfortunate side effects of "blowing up", etc. Taking care to choose a trusted brand should mitigate these dangers, but common sense like not charging them unattended would help. Remember, E-Cigs are not the only things that have blown up whilst on charge, there was a major recall of laptop batteries a while ago for the same reason! You could sit there spinning away, too scared to use an E-Cig because it might blow up, and then with a bang, you have shards of Thor and his hammer flying across the room because your laptop has exploded under the strain (Probably the strain of being called upon to render more than two reels wild in the wildstorm).

Hi, have you tried Allen Carr's Easy way to stop smoking? This book worked for me and I have recommended it to many other family members who have had success with it. The beauty of this method is that it changes the way you think about smoking. You no longer see yourself as "giving something up"
rather than becoming free of something that was holding you back.

After i had my 'experience' with the E-cig.i have just went cold turkey.

I joined a gym as i was eating anything in sight lol but i feel great though even though i have gained a few pounds grrrr

The fact that you want to give it up is already the first step towards quitting. However, make sure you really mean it as otherwise, any approach you will take will be for nothing. We all want to quit bad habits but are we always mentally prepared for it??? This is what I mean.

My husband has been a smoker since he was 13 yrs old. Now he is 36 and I cannot tell you the countless times he wanted to quit but was not really prepared to do so. We tried everything from patches, the gum, electronic sensors, ecig...nothing worked. He knew that his health was not in his favor yet he coudn't stop!!

When our LO was born, it still wasnt enough for him to give it up until one day he realized that he might not be around long enough to see her grow up if he continued down this road...

He booked a session of hypnotherapy and has never looked back since. The first few weeks were hard and I seriously was going to apply for a divorce. It was tough for him but even for me as I was the one person in his life that he could 'lash out' with when he needed too. It got so bad that at times, I secretly wished he would start smoking again.

baby steps later and plenty of patience on my end, he took it one day at a time. Its now been 4 months since he quit and he doesnt even think of smoking. He misses it but wouldnt dream of it. He did gain a few pounds and still eats almost everything in sight but the cravings have decreased so its just a matter of letting the storm pass completely. The weigh can be shed off when he is good and ready. The damage he has done due to his smoking cannot be reversed.

I guess my point is, first believe that you are bigger than this and stick to it. If it fails, just keep trying. I dont believe that the hypnosis was the key here, I sincerely believe that this time he really meant it.

Good luck and dont ever give up trying to kill the habit!

The weigh can be shed off when he is good and ready. The damage he has done due to his smoking cannot be reversed.

Don't forget your lungs can still gain in health and strenght again once stop smoking.
Don't get me wrong,smoking does damage to the body but if you quit you can still rebuild your health significantly.

I mean only look at your ability to smell and taste when you quit smoking,it will increase big time.
Also you will be able to breath better as your lungs will recover step by step allthough this offcourse is a long road but it is defo possible!
It will have a positive effect on your bloodpressure too.


That said,I am still smoking myself!

ecig Njoy brand Menthol. This e cig seems to be best should be about $8. I never smoked menthol, but the menthol gives you more of a smoking sensation. As you use it your usage of the ecig should go down. I know only use it for a crutch when drinking.

Oh and your mind has to be set to quit. I tried the ecig in past, but would always ask for a cigarette after a few puffs. This time is serious so its working, plus I think I found the best brand out of all the ecigs.

I made several serious attempts and eventually failed (the longest was more than 1 year). Since spring 2011 I switched to e-cigs and would advise every smoker struggling with his addiction to give it a try. The odds of a ecig battery exploding are not higher than the odds of any other battery exploding, cellphone or other. For me personally switching to vaping was extremely pleasant, there is no craving, the body does not take thousands of toxic supstances, no smell of cold smoke in the house etc. Plus its much cheaper. I save more than 100 € every month, compared with what I was spending for tobacco cigarettes.

I take my hat off to anyone who has stopped by any means.
I smoked for 15 years (25 a day) andf stopped April last year. I used my GP for help, they worked with me by using champix and similar pills.
For me, that worked. It was still the inner need and want to stop though. If you not ready to stop, dont try

You may need to try various options. Dont worry, try them all if needs be.

I agree with the weight issue! Ha ha, I gained 25 pounds... will deal with that next year.
I have no more aches and pains, smell and taste all better.

I dont have regrets in life but starting smoking was a poor choice. It a m*^ther F^$&r to stop.

Electronic cigarette batteries exploding are just as possible as the ones on a laptop and the UPS (uninterruptible power supply) that businesses use to ensure no data is lost when the lights go out.

You may be more likely to be on a plane when the pilot is dying and you as a passenger have to land the hunk of metal.

On a more serious note I have heard they are a good way to quit because they offer the vapour and the tactile experience of holding something on the lips.

I have heard that a possible downside to them is inhaling too much and getting too much nicotine into the system which can cause headaches.

A possible suggestion is to use high vapour brands and then reduce the nicotine levels by switching to the different versions they offer (reduced nicotine levels) over time until you are smoking completely free of nicotine.

Probably the only way to stop people smoking would be legislation enforced that would not allow anybody over the age of “x” to purchase Tobacco without an I.D. Card confirming they have an addiction to the product, thus stopping the take-up.

In reality though the problem would go underground like the “speak easy” days in the USA and more recently the online Casino shenanigans, tomfooleries and monkeyshines we see when people get what they desire and the part where a government are at a loss to tax it.
I’d hazard a guess that money has some deep rooted part of it somewhere, call me cynical.

I think the trouble with e-Cigs is that they continue the habit part of the addiction and that's the bit you need to break.

For me: I gave up cold turkey as well. But I did a lot of research first and the conclusion I came to was that 'if I could break the habitual smoking, I could probably conquer the addiction too'.

So, I made a list of things I did where I smoked almost as an afterthought. It included: first cup of tea or coffee in the morning, phone calls, end of a lunch break, first glass of wine, end of the working day, etc. etc.

Once I was aware of these - I just used willpower to not smoke at those times. The cravings for each individual cigarette last all of about 15 minutes, so if you can figure out stuff to do for those 15 minutes you'll be fine until the next craving.

Trust me when I say that once you've got a list of the 'habit' cigarettes (my list had around 20 or so instances every day) and you make a conscious effort not to smoke during those times, you've got it made.

I am not a smoker myself but I know what it did to my husband and the addiction is really bad. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is its socially excepted so it make it 100x harder to stop. At the end of the day, an addiction is what it is and getting rid of it requires a lot of effort. There is plenty of help to stop but still not enough awareness from the media. Of course tabacco companies would not be happy with this!
