Senate Confirmation Hearings: Eric Holder, Day One

"KYL: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. There seem to be an inordinate number of members of this committee and the finance committee that discussed and talked about the potential for fraud and money- laundering and organized crime. Again, I won't go through all of that.

But the question that I'd ask and wanted just to get confirmed for the record is that you indicated that under your leadership the Department of Justice would continue to aggressively enforce the law against the forms of Internet gambling that DOJ considers illegal.

HOLDER: That's correct, Senator.

KYL: And then we discussed the regulations that were issued recently, actually, jointly by the Federal Reserve Board and the Treasury Department in consultation with the attorney-general.

The regulations primarily try to go at the problem by thwarting the payments for unlawful Internet gambling -- in other words, to shut off the cash flow.

And I mentioned the fact that they were already beginning to spend millions of dollars in an effort to try to undo these regulations somehow and hope that you would -- and you indicated you would -- oppose efforts to modify or to stop those regulations, and, of course, continue to be vigilant in enforcing those regulations to shut off the flow of cash from this illegal activity. Is that your intention?

HOLDER: Yes, that is my position. That's what I will do.

KYL: Yes, thank you, and I appreciate that very much. And we could talk a lot more about the pernicious nature of Internet gambling, but in view of the time here, let me move on......................................."

LOL, Holder is laughing behind his teeth as he smiles at Kyl in order to get his Senate Confirmation and blessing...Holder is a gambler at heart ! :D

I have no idea what Holder's personal stance on gaming is but the Dems are on record as seeing Kyl as being just another (R) blow-hard PITA. It would not surprise me if Rob have the right of it here.

Maybe I should have just posted the transcript in clj7221's thread started the end of last week so feel free to merge but since Holder's response is not quite as direct a quote as several posters' sought, I assumed Holder's response would be fair game for interpretation , as both you and Rob have posted accordingly.

FYI, the previous sister/brother thread does elaborate on Holder's previous ties to the very powerful NFL and it's lobbyist's whom to date have not given an inch in it's opposition to O.G...........Personally, I believe that online Poker has the best chance of becoming an additional carve-out but JMO!!

Thank You for locating that Nashvegas,I appreciate it. I have been so busy with work I forgot about the post.

From what I can see, Senate confirmation hearings are pretty notorious for the nominees trying to keep their questioners sweet.

That said, Holder (see Casinomeister News) has an extensive past record of involvement with the NFL as a lobbyist....and we all know what the sentiment toward Internet gambling is there.

ESPN carried an interesting article on Kyl's questions in Holder's confirmation hearing (which imo also indicated a prior conversation with Holder on the subject) in which it was pointed out that as the head enforcer in the Department of Justice, Holder would have to deal with that body's insistence that all online gambling (even that exempted by vested interest politicians) is illegal.

It's going to be an interesting change of leadership, I think.
