Has Anyone Noticed A Change At The Grocery Stores?

i was watching the local news the other night and they had a segment where the t.v reporter was in the grocery store and pointing out different products to customers that the manufacturing company has changed the design of the package to put less product in, example.. jiffy peanut butter now has less product in it as well as certain bread companys are following suit as well as other food companys, this all due to the economy and high rising gas prices, i went to a local grocery store myself and started checking items i tend to buy weekly, they were right, just wanted people to look and be aware, some have gone up in pricing while others are putting less product in or redesigning the package to make it look like your getting the same when your not, i guess everyone has to make a proffit one way or another but in all it still hurts the customer in the long run......................laurie:)

many prices have gone up in the truck stop i work at, half litres of milk, multipack coke/water, vehicle additives, fuel obviously. and i am noticing the screws tightening at the grocery store as well.

thank goodness i save 5-6 cents per litre as per my work's bonus scheme and me shopping there five days a week lol. bet it costs me 8-9 bucks round trip for a day of work though, ugh.

I had already noticed this... Trash bags I buy used to come 22 to a box, now it's 20 -- and the price has gone up a little.

Due to the rise in gasoline prices everything else is going up as well. So you could say the change I notice is that I don't have any (change) when leaving the grocery. ;)

I remember the 1st time I ever noticed something like that.......do you call it shrinkage? lol
It was when my oldest daughter was a baby and I was buying diapers, which was about 19 years ago. Instead of raising the price they lowered the # of diapers in the package.
IMO it's a sneaky way of increasing profits.
:)

aye that, wb, 2L ice cream became 1.89L and sometimes now 1.65L, and no good kinds available under 3 bucks. the new tight-seal nestles tubs are really effective, though.

600mL cokes are now 591mL as well. a lot of 910-950mL bottles going around too, don't know if they're descended from full litres. i will watch the count/weight of my other items too. yikes! bread's regularly over $2 a loaf now for crying out loud.

re Shrinkage

This practice has been going on a long time. In Canada we went metric in the seventies, and required packaging be in metric. A pound is 454 grams, and a lot of pound packages went to 450g. Not a big drop, but times millions of sales adds up bigtime for the manufacturer. Now most of those items are down to 400g.

Customers notice more when price goes up rather than size going down. My coffee can shrunk from 1kg down to 925 grams recently, a decrease of 7.5%, which equals a price increase of close to 7.9%.

What's next? Nickle slots costing 6 cents?::eek:

i really took notice when i stopped at a local gas/ store to grab a loaf of bread on the way home,as i was out as ususall lol. when i went to make a sandwich later on the lunchmeat was hanging off all 4 sides:eek:not only has it gone up in pricing as happy posted earlier, but it has shrunk also:p.

Mayo used to have 32 oz, now it has 30 oz. I saw it on the Today show. They are all doing that. We have 8 packs of eggs along side with a dozen

Our gas station in Conshy is $4.10 a gallon and not only that ...Rich said that alot of stations have bags over the 87 so your stuck buying higher grades on top of it

Also...Atlantic City has had their biggest drop in sales since the opening of the casinos

I used to buy one brand of shampoo because it had no water in it. So just a very small drop would lather your whole head (I have long hair).

I changed brands several weeks ago when I noticed the price went up and the "new" main ingredient was now water... Over 40% water, and it now takes an entire hand full of the same shampoo to lather my head, what a rip off.

I guess as long as people in the west are stupid enough to put up with this ripoff crap, the marketers will continue to act like sleaze and offer to sell it to us.

I hate it when guys from the US complain about the price of gas!

In the UK, price for Diesel is 1.20 the cheapest, a litre, thats about $12.50 a gallon!!

There is talk it will be 1.50 a litre by September, thats $15!
:eek:my butt would be learning how to ride a bike or skate, i just cant imagine paying that much, infact i just traded my s.u.v in today for a honda accord, atleast when i put 40.00 in it today , it did burp:D

I think it will be learning pretty soon how to do that, but for the moment, I still have to fill my tank with $130 of diesel!

end all your fuel worries with one of these. think of it as gas communism.

Don't Swallow those Harmful Liquids though!

Trevor: how do we know what kind of gas is in the tanks, ricky?
Ricky: easy, you taste it, dumbass. regular tastes really sour, supremium is more tangy, and diesel, actually tastes pretty good.

Gas is expensive over the pond BUT your gas lasts alot longer than us so to say you get mad at US people who complain about gas prices is just silly.

The average car, lets just say for sake of argument

Ireland: yes , its 12.50 a gallon
Your cars average 32 mpg as opposed to ours which is about 15
your gas is a much higher octane which means your cars run better and you dont need to replace it as fast as we do.

So....We may pay less but we fill our cars twice as much and our gas has a lesser grade as well.

The other thing that always bothers me is when someone says something like that. It goes both ways too. I have never made fun of someone who is non US upset about the price of something. Its just rude. We all are accustom (sp) to our prices and we have legitimate gripes no matter how much it is elsewhere because we dont live there.

I wonder if this is the explanation for all of the threads lately about casino payout percentages. When profits are down, just put less bread in the bag.

Fair points. You could easily get a european car over there anyway!

Besides, even if you fill up twice, it still is not equal to the amount we pay.

Truth is , we all need something to rant about

British gas the most expensive I believe. It is impossible to say that we get accustomed to prices, when fuel has gone up from about 80p (diesel) 3 years ago, to 1.25 (average) now. Thats a 50% jump in 3 years. With all the talk about strikes, I find it hard to believe that people living here, are honestly accustomed to it.

Its just a rant, when I say "I hate it when US complainers..." , come on, take a laugh!

We dont pay profits on Gambling (if there are any ), or the lottery. We also have the NHS, so it kinda equals out, but the fuel thing is out of proportion.

I noticed it with toilet paper. Yes, toilet paper.

My holder doesn't have the spring-loaded roller like most holders. Mine holds a roll by having the edges of the roll rest on 2 stationary ledges at either end. Well, a couple of months ago, my toilet paper rolls started falling off the holder. Yep, they've made the rolls skinnier and my toilet paper now has to sit on the back of the toilet until I rip the old holder off the wall and replace it with a new one. :p

..............now that stinks when they go messing with the toilet paper:eek:

I don't understand how people live? What is your rate of pay? Say minimum wage? I'm thinking what do cashiers do? It seems half their paycheck would be in the gas tank.
