Try Gumtree for the cheapest cars and u can find a gem there, i got my first car from there but remember when buying privately u have to be vigilant against all kinds of fraud so make sure to take someone knowledgeable with u

Do a HPI check and when u check the car , check the engine number and chasis number are in order

For insurance i paid around 2200(Full Payment) for my first year for audi tt through insure your motor but try different websites and compare them as i found some qoutes were cheaper on confused then compare the market or another couple of sites and vice versa

Try adding an older person but make sure u add yourself as main driver as if u r main driver and dont declare thats fraud

Also if you want cheap insurance make sure to buy a relatively newer car which will bring ur insurance down and if u can have it garaged at night also would help

But if u r looking to buy a car under 1000, u can be expected to pay with ur age around 3-4k at the least depending on postcode as i'm in manchester and all of manchester is in red zone for insurers

Like the previous poster said, if you are in your early 20's your insurance is likely to be at least 2 or 3 times that! :eek2:
That's ONE of the advantages of being old - my fully comp insurance on my 1.9CTDI Zafira is only £209.

At your age I think you should thoroughly explore what your insurance options & costs will be before you even start looking for a vehicle.

According to this ():

I would definately do some research for cheapest insurance and pick car by that. To buy a car for 1000£ and buy an insurance for 3000£ seems quite bad. It's strange, here in Sweden the insurance gets cheaper the older the car is. Our "second" car is 13 years old and cost around 250£ fully insured (I'm over 40, our own house etc.) but it's more than double that on our 5 year old car with half the mileage.

for car insurance check the comparison sites that find best quote but for first time young driver itll be expensive wherever you get it , places like autotrader that you can pick up a copy from local garage for free are good places to check for cheap cars , but before buying remember all the costs, not only have you got insurance but petrols sky high and with an older car chances road tax will be dear , also an old car might soon need a lot of repairs and once you go for an mot it could cost a fortune and you could end up a lot out of pocket , maybe if you can afford it and have a good credit rating it might work out cheaper in long run to try and get a newer car on finance, that way tax will be cheaper , running costs cheaper as no repairs etc and no mots for first 3 years

What the hell is going on here? 3000£ for car insurance? Is that a lifetime payment or something?

yearly and trust me that would be one of cheapest qoutes as average first timer in the UK pays around 2.4k/annum so depending on area u live it could be anywhere b/w 1600-3600 and these are the cheapest

The only other option is to have a sainsbury big brother box(That records everything from how fast u r driving on which road and how you break etc) fitted which could bring it down around 10-15% but with that you are not allowed to driver at night times b/w 11-7 and fixed miles per month

So its virtually impossible for young people to have a car without atleast having 7-8k spare to give to these lot from insurance to mot to road tax

I think these insurance estimates are way off!

When I was 21 I insured a 4.0 V8 Jaguar with 290bhp for £1,500/year and I thought that was outrageous! I'm 26 now and I wouldn't expect to pay more than £500/year, and that would be for fully comp and a performance/luxury car.

That was 5 years ago so if u r a day under 25 these days ps average insurance is around 1500 for new drivers and its real hard to get a qoute for 1500

If you were covered as a driver on your mom or dad's policy, it's definitely worth checking with their company. I was 30 when I got my first car, and had had a valid licence since I was 17. Quotes were quite high everywhere for a previously uninsured driver. But I had been covered when living at home (for an extra premium), and then as an occasional driver for a smaller premium until I was 25. That company was willing to give me 5/6 stars and I got very reasonable insurance, since they considered me previously insured.

A car gives you a lot of freedom, but a used car will always need repairs as well as the regular maintenance kind of stuff.

If you look at all the costs, you can take a lot of buses, taxis and rent a car a few times a year for far less.

Worth looking into seeing if there is a car sharing club where you live as well.

I'm trying to figure out why it is so expensive. 3000£ to insure a 1000£ car doesn't make any sense to me. Why is it so expensive? Do you have the "no-fault" in the UK? If not that might be the problem right there.

Here a younger driver would have to pay a lot more, but for a such a crappy car probably no more than $700-$800 (~400£) a year, if that.

5 years ago I had an older, cheaper car (Honda Civic) and the insurance cost was a whopping $23 (12£) a month, with tax. We have some messed up things over here, but getting f*cked over by insurance companies isn't one of them I guess.

I'd really hate to have insanely high gas prices and car insurances.

I guess different countries have different laws and taxes when it comes to these kind of insurances. Those numbers (3000£) for an insurance is a bit insane. It’s like they do not want drivers below 25 to own a car.

The insurance isn't just to cover the cost of replacing your own car - it is for all the damage you might do to other peoples's property or person.
e.g. If you killed someone by reckless driving the insurance company might have to pay out £100,000's, or if you crashed into a Ferrari and wrote it off, your insurer would have to replace it.

We have the same here, but those numbers (over 3000£/year) for an old car is insane and the only explanation is that they don't want young british drivers owning cars.

What has the age of the car to do with anything?
If you were hit by a car doing 70kph - would you suffer the same injury if it were a 30-year-old model, or a brand new one?
(Actually, the modern one would likely cause less damage to you).

Insurance (like most things) is based on facts and figures, Unfortunately a relatively small number of young male drivers turn into total idiots after passing their test and case immense damage. The simple fact is, their age-group is VERY high risk, hence the high premiums.
Bizarrely, in this age of "political correctness", the UK have recently brought in a law which says that insurers have to charge female drivers the same amount as male ones - even though they are MUCH lower risk. How bonkers is that? :eek2:

I have no idea, I just find it ridiculous.

Prepare yourself for a laugh!

In Sweden, there as a case some years back where a female driver made a sex change and therefore her/his insurance cost increased a lot and she/he was mad. This wasn't part of the plan. :what:

I agree KK, it's supposed to be cheaper for female and rutined drivers. The discussion is in place here in Sweden as well but I think that the insurance companies can get away with it because they instead claim that if they have to have equal prices this will increase the prices overall because of higher risks.

So that's why you have insane costs. What we have here is called a "

" (ie: each driver is covered by their own insurance, regardless of who's responsible for the accident).

Also, body harm/death in traffic accidents is covered by a public insurance (which costs $129 a year per vehicle, regardless of your age/gender), so private insurances only pay for property damages.

So basically, a 50 year old lady driver pays equal to a 18 year old school boy when it comes to human damages? This "basic" insurance is definately depending on age and sex here.

Yes, since it's a public insurance there's no discrimination in regard to age/gender. It will cost more if you have a bad driving record or if you're driving a motorcycle though.

.

Thats how it is, if i try and insure a 1998 micra for myself with 4 years No claims bonus and no accident/claim history i'm qouted 1300 where for a 2011 model car i'm qouted around 400-500

Its not ridiculous, its their risk assesment policy and the insurers think if we buy a newer more expensive car we would look after it more than we would look after a car thats worth nothing hence the premium for newer cars is lower

Also newer cars have more sophisticated security systems which make them harder to be stolen which is also taken to consideration in all of this

I only said what i went through with my first experience where when i was trying to insure a cheap car worth 900 in Manchester area i was getting qoutes of around 4k(4 Years ago) but then i found a high performance verhicle which costed me 6k i paid 2.2k for my insurance that was in monthly installments of around 186/month

So in the UK Insurance companies work on Risk assesment and statistics which means 18-24 years have most accidents statistically so doesnt matter how good of a driver u are, until u r 25 u r stuffed unless u get a classic car

Now there is another way of getting a cheap insurance in the UK, insurance companies give cheap insurance for classic cars that doesnt mean cars that are over 30 years old, They consider any jaguar thats 7 years old and any bmw thats 10 years old a classic car

This article should be of use to the OP
