Update Fighting Spam in the Forum

Hi all,

A week or so ago, I made the command decision to make registration a little easier, and to no longer moderate new signups. With this decision, it also delivered a few more assholes signing up - who are not bots - but people hired to post spam. So we have been seeing a few of these turds getting through the ol' gauntlet and posting their spewage.

Well fear no more. I have created a new usergroup (PreNewbie) that is a moderated group. The first two posts are moderated (which means one of us admins must look at it before it's approved), and once the third post is approved - that person is automatically promoted to the Newbie user group. Their permissions are about the same, but PreNewbies cannot post to their profile page, nor to others.

This has also been applied retroactively - so those of you who have never posted before and are only lurking, your first two posts will be reviewed before they go live.

I hope this will eliminate most of the garbage we have been seeing lately.

I hope they still can send pm's though since many are signing up just to be able to reach a rep.
Besides you need to be able to do that before posting a complaint.

Just my two cents but I signed up in 2009 and found the process quite easy. The new rule of having the first two posts reviewed probably won't stop those who are determined to spam. They will probably change tactics as annoying people usually do. But you are the boss

Most of the spammers are either bots or copy/paste merchants trying to hit as many forums as they can so a good proportion should be caught. There will always be the odd persistant asshole but as I'm a moderator, you're stuck with me

No Not stuck with you, but happy to have you as a moderator!! I think you and all mods due a fantastic job catching spammers. No complaints from me!

Nice to see such a proactive group of mods that work together to make life on the net a little easier for their forum members!
