Do not be too inspired anyone in the appointment of Donelan. I have the misfortune of living in a constituency that borders hers and also live a mere 20 miles away from another great MP in the form of the Victorian Pencil!

I don't believe we will see any great shake ups as a result of Donelan heading up DCMS. In fact I get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that pretty much all draconian measures being mooted could get put through.

2022 could well be the year that the UK online gambling industry really does breathe its final breath!

I see it hasn't taken the Betting and Gaming Council to welcome Donelan to her new post. With their CEO quoted as saying this:

"On behalf of the 119,000 people whose jobs are supported by our members – from the high street to hospitality, from tourism to tech – I’d like to congratulate Michelle Donelan on her new role as Secretary of State for DCMS. Our industry generates £4.5bn in taxes for the Treasury and contributes £7.7bn for the economy in gross value added."

“We have been working extremely closely with the DCMS over many years to help the Government find the right balance in the Gambling Review, so that we continue to drive big changes and higher standards on safer gambling to better protect the most vulnerable, whilst at the same time ensuring that the millions of people who enjoy an occasional flutter perfectly safely and responsibly have the freedom to do so.”

When I worked at Ladbrokes at the turn of the century - circa 2000 - 2005, they were 'lobbying' Blair's government then. Hence the betting duty tax got scrapped in betting shops in 2001 and then FOBT's came about.

Some things never change.
