Law enforcement officials are investigating what appears to be a massive theft of U.S. consumers' credit card data, MasterCard and Visa confirmed Friday. The computer security expert who first reported the theft said it might involve as many as 10 million accounts, making it one of the largest known credit card heists.

Yikes, that's a lot of peoples details. I am using my pre-paid card so much more these days for this very reason.

From what I was reading yesterday, MC, Visa and Discover didn't even make the 'news' public until someone in the banking community saw the alerts then told the media. WTF is up with that?? Oh, well, they say they're closely monitoring the affected accounts for any suspicious activity. Excuse me? You let a zillion cards be compromised and I'm supposed to now trust you to bar the proper barn door? Sheesh...

Last month I went thru this crap: Someone got a hold of my number and emptied out my checking, when that was done the credit line kicked in, when that was emptied the savings kicked in- got all of it but 300 when I woke up to an email from bank saying your acct balance is 0.... It was a pain in the ass- they went shopping in VA - I called the stores they shopped at and they used a name S Mang.. So after police reports closing of credit acct and blahh blahh blahhh - finally got it all reversed- which pissed me off because they did it as charge backs- Still waiting to see if it affects the credit. But this is a common thing now as I was told by police and bank- they just need your number and they make a new card and or just a mag strip and its buy buy buy with your money. Funny thing is I said to the bank you once shut my bank card down because I was IN FL on vacation and you wanted to be sure it was me - Why didnt you ? all the out of town shopping this time- oh we were closed WHAT? LOL

One again great minds at work lol

That's what I thought when I read the bit about this being uncovered in earlier this year. But I seem to recall there have been other cases where these big banks said diddly until the issue hit the press from other sources.

Just the number? Everything else a bluff (name, expiry, codes, etc)

I thought the number on it's own was not enough, they needed other data from the card which needed the card to be "skimmed" at some point, or a full set of data stolen from a merchant database.

If numbers alone are enough, they don't even need the details from a card, just a "brute force" attack method that generates valid CC numbers, and then checks their validity via an online site to see whether it is rejected because it doesn't exist, or because other account details don't match.

It's also a loophole that when the banks are "closed", fraudsters have free reign. Surely fraudsters will use this and defraud cards during weekends and holidays, which also happens to be when shops are busiest, and thus less likely to check so carefully on the card transactions.

It has been claimed that banks accept a certain level of "leakage" from card fraud before they see the need to make changes to tackle it. They don't care where the money leaks to (crime syndicates, terrorists, etc), just how much.

I dont have that problem. My bank locks my account where my cards are used overseas too much. eg: my casinos. I deposit alot and because my banks have 'no idea' who or what these online transactions are from overseas, they're really quick to lock them.

Which I totally get (safety and security blah, blah) but its a total pain, when your'll trying to make a deposit in the weekend and your cards being blocked and no way to get it unblocked again until the banks open up on Monday.. lol!
