Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

Dont really want to get involved with the Sweden debate but out of interest I checked the population density.
Sweden 59 per km ,UK 725. per km.Surely this has a significance on infection transmission and the effect
of lockdowns, The UK lockdown should be be far more effective than one in Sweden (scuse ignorance ,I dont
know if they have ever one)., Seems to me the Swedes are pretty well isolated most of the time anyway.

not at all, because I'm not stupid enough to think you can look at one figure and think that it proves anything, without taking other relevant factors into account.
They are not close to being better than 'most' countries that have locked down. They are 17th worst in the world, do you think there are only 30 or so countries worldwide that have had a lockdown? More lies from the resident troll. What a sad sad life you must have.
 
We're now on track to fully open up again on the 1st Feb, the lockdown has done its job, local pubs and restaurants (and all other venues) are sending out publicity to get people out again, me and a few mates are planning a day at the pub followed by a meal at a nice Indian.

(For clarity, we need to get to 21 days with no new community cases for lockdown to end.)

Like last year the lockdown has been both well observed, and also enforced for the handful of arseholes who wouldn't take it seriously. (Just the other week a couple of blokes were jailed for 30 days. They crashed their car on the mountain (non-serious, both were fine, but emergency services were called), and when the police found out they were from two different households (even though the journey was legitimate), arrest > court > jail.)

Just another four days with no community cases and we'll be done.

I'm not a huge fan of masks (I mean, who is?), not least because I wear glasses and they steam up like a bastard, but it's not much of an imposition and it's something I can do for the benefit of others. Plus when I think of the folks who continue to work every day in the places that need to remain open, such as supermarkets, the very least I can do is demonstrate that I respect what they're doing, and do what I can to make them and everyone else safer.

Here I am masked up ready to go into the supermarket last night. It's not a muzzle, stop calling it a fucking muzzle, it's a mask, and it just might save someone's life.

It's almost as if, and I know this might sound crazy, but a government that has a plan, clearly communicates the plan, explains how the plan will work and what it will achieve, follows the plan, and enforces the plan, seems to have a decent chance of enacting a virus elimination strategy and getting everyone back to their normal lives.

I hate the attitude some people keep espousing, you know, 'Well let the vulnerable and the old and the fat etc shield so I CAN CARRY ON DOING WHATEVER IT IS I WANT TO DO' - how about fuck that? How about we all make a sacrifice in the short term so that EVERYONE can back to living their lives in the medium to long term.

Some folks will still be posting their absolute bollocks to this thread about lockdowns not working - (whilst also behaving in a fashion that pretty much guarantees their failure, 'Lockdowns don't work, fuck that shit, now I'm off out partying!') - and moaning about their muzzles and all the rest of it whilst we're back out at the pub, shaking the hands of our friends and hugging them, downing pints and spending our money back into the local economy.

This scientist is attracting a lot of flak at the moment for 'politicising' the Covid debate, which means she told the truth about the political failures in the UK that have lead to us having one of the absolute worst track records on Covid in the entire world, not only on sickness and mortality, but also on economic damage.

Liam Fox has been Tweeting about her, some people don't like to hear the truth.

Mate he’s allowed his opinion, just as people disagree don’t brand them trolls.

i don’t agree with his sweden stance either as it’s not comparable at all.

but I’m happy for anyone to disagree with me mate.

He has posted the same thing over and over. His 'facts' he posts have been proven wrong, over and over. He posts them again and again. His chart he posted, Sweden are the 17th worst country in the world for 'per million', funny how it cut off just above Sweden. There are almost 200 countries in the world, he's posting as fact that Sweden's way of dealing with it was the right way, how can that be a fact when they are in the bottom 10% of countries? Ask him to explain how Norways figures are so much better than Sweden's, when they have had lockdowns, and are a very similar country. You will be wasting your time as he's been asked that probably a dozen times already by multiple members, and refuses to answer. Thats trolling.

Tbh mate that's an oft used get out for 'I can say what i like, regardless of any fact' and blurs the lines between fact and non fact.

These are often the same people who, seemingly, hate things like the 'race card' being pulled , yet are happy to hide behind 'just my opinion'

Also, 'opinion' carries subjectivity - hence why 'My opinion is that Hitler rocked' etc doesn't really cut it.

But he posts things as facts, when the only fact is that they are lies. Thats why so many people get their backs up at him, not because they don't agree with him.
As an example, 'the suicide rate has gone up by 300%'
That is posted as fact, not, 'i think the suicide rate will have increased' which would be an opinion.
It hasn't. It was a lie. Thats trolling.

Maybe i am crazy then too, but in my opinion this is how it should be, planning things well as possible and have some targets what to reach and how to measure them and then also it's been almost year now with this covid show, there is much more information available as well to work out some plan what can be done, where to start to etc... And communicating it to people, didn't give very deep look to that plan but at least it looked that there is one and somebody at least have tried to think bit further than let's do lockdown and nothing really planned further.

That for sure should be positive thing for plan itself if you can explain it to people in detail and it makes sense, that's much more than many places where only message is that lockdown start, we have no plans when and how to finish it but we'll figure out and if not working well, can always start new one. Would guess that have helped IOM people (or huge majority of them) to cope with regulations when you are clearly given facts and plan which actually looks quite good, was easy to get majority to follow it.

The passport should be digital and capable of tracking and verifying a person’s coronavirus “status” wherever they travel in the world.
Included would be details of any vaccination they had, together with the results of Covid-19 test results, the Daily Telegraph reported.
Governments could access data at borders by scanning a QR code, rather than working through paper certificates which might be vulnerable to fraud.
A report published by the Tony Blair Institute said current border restrictions were “disjointed” and urged the UK to “place the creation of a global Covid-19 travel pass as a key item on the G7 agenda” – a body which the UK currently leads.

It's a funny old world when a war criminal can have their own institute, and give advice to countries.

Latest 'lockdowns don't work' news, from notoriously horrible BBC News biased MSM etc.

I like the way our Chief Minister added in the caveat that some people might still feel nervous and/or still want to wear a facemask even when we're out of lockdown, and to respect their feelings and still give them some space.

This is what considerate, intelligent government looks like.

And yet plenty of large countries have managed to follow a virus elimination strategy, enabled by, amongst other things, lockdowns and closing of borders - and as you say, the UK is an island state so it's got that going for it right out of the gate, Johnson's government fucked it all up right from the start.

Lockdowns have worked to an extent in the UK, although the latest one has faltered with the more transmissible variant on the loose (it's still managed to stop the exponential growth of the virus though), and in many regards it's neither being observed or enforced, for all the reasons that are well known, not least (for example) the fact that many people simply can't afford to self-isolate so either avoid getting tested (despite having obvious symptoms) and/or don't follow isolation rules.

The blanket statement of 'lockdowns don't work' is demonstrably incorrect and completely disproven by ample evidence from many countries around the world, but like anything, they need to be done properly and are not a single answer, they work in conjunction with a load of other measures.

What does that chart show? Absolutely nothing as there is no other information with it.
Why haven't you included the fact that Belgium had lockdowns starting 18th March and 2nd November.
Funnily enough, their rate fell dramatically both times a few weeks later. According to you, lockdowns don't work and actually increase transmission rates, so how come, as has been the case in the UK, both times they had a lockdown, the figures fell. All your chart does, is prove they do work.

Scenario: Person A reads no newspapers, has no internet, watches no News on TV = They would go out not knowing we are in Lockdown around here, normal life appears to be taking place add or take the odd face covering, yes West Midlands people are either total arseholes, pig shit thick or maybe even both.

Scenario B: I was in my car doing my usual work round yesterday and found myself talking, no shouting to myself, main part of the conversation (which was a bit one sided) "Why the FUCK am I sat in traffic, Lockdown, what lockdown!!!"

My point, this is why things in the UK will drag on and on and on and really postpone our return to any sense of normality.

Re-opening schools is not going to make a noticeable difference to the 'fight' therefore on that measure the harms easily outweigh any benefit. Unless you have some stats and scientific evidence that children are a significant transmission factor?

Not all measures will have the same effect, therefore stick to the most important [backed by science and research] and weigh up the benefits and disadvantages of the others.
