Corona virus - Covid 19 discussion

ive never heard it said that way vs 1.4 billion :D

That's probably because I was thinking in Finnish terms. Billion is close to Finnish word biljoona, which is actually trillion in English. Finland uses long scale as most English speaking countries use short scale.

Confusing. We should all use long scale in integer powers of 10. And celsius scale. And the metric system. :)

I have read about the occurrence of hawking and spitting years ago, I'm sure it was in a proper travel writer's book [might have been bill bryson or paul theroux]; everybody farts, don't know about untidy.

But if you look up chinese and lack of empathy, there are quite a lot of articles online regarding that, some laying the blame at the communist's door as they've relegated the importance of religion, some saying money has become too important. They do have a slightly different outlook on life, death etc...maybe more realistic or shaped by the harsh realities of living in a country with 1.4 billion people.

Every country has a class system even communist china, I highly doubt an educated chinese person would do what that woman did, or spit in the street, the standards of behaviour differ. People from china could make sweeping judgements on the brits, the lager lout culture etc.., would it be totally untrue, no, is it racist to bring it up it, no.

It may not be racist but anyone who makes sweeping judgements or generalised statements on another race is not being fair or even realistic.

As already pointed out the world is full of nice people and some nasty people plus a few total nutters . They come from every country , every colour and every race.

Comments like the one made will upset people and as they mostly arent even factual it really is best not to do it.

This virus could cause people to panic and no good can come from people leading others to believe all sorts of nonsense as people could end up hurt

from the guardian newspaper written by a chinese freelance journalist Lijia Zhang, if I had written these I'd no doubt be condemned as being prejudiced or bigoted:

The fundamental problem, in my view, lies in one word that describes a state of mind: shaoguanxianshi, meaning don't get involved if it's not your business. In our culture, there's a lack of willingness to show compassion to strangers. We are brought up to show kindness to people in our network of guanxi, family and friends and business associates, but not particularly to strangers, especially if such kindness may potentially damage your interest.

Fei Xiaotong, China's first sociologist, described Chinese people's moral and ethical characteristics in his book, From the Soil, in the middle of the last century. He pointed out that selfishness is the most serious shortcoming of the Chinese. "When we think of selfishness, we think of the proverb 'Each person should sweep the snow from his own doorsteps and should not fret about the frost on his neighbour's roof,'" wrote Fei. He offered the example of how the Chinese of that period threw rubbish out of their windows without the slightest public concern. Things are much the same today.

Under Mao, citizens were forced to behave themselves in both public and private spheres. Every March, people were obliged to go into the street to do good deeds: cleaning buses, fixing bicycles and offering haircuts. Now relaxed social control and commercialisation over the past three decades have led people to behave more selfishly again.

People are enjoying, and sometimes abusing, the vast personal freedoms that didn't exist before. To start with, it is now safe to be "naughty". Back in the early 1980s, when I worked at a rocket factory in Nanjing, one of my colleagues, a married man, was caught having an affair with an unmarried woman. He was given a three-year sentence in a labour camp and the girl was disgraced. In today's society, having extramarital affairs or keeping an ernai – second wife or concubine – is as common as "cow hair", as the Chinese would say. For a novel I am writing on prostitution, I have interviewed many prostitutes and ernai. Many see their profession as a way to gather wealth quickly, feeling few moral qualms.

China's moral crisis doesn't just manifest itself in personal life but also in business practice and many other areas. The high-profile "poisoned milk powder" case and the scandal of using "gutter oil" as cooking oil have shocked and disgusted people around the world. Last year an article, "Why have Chinese lost their sense of morality?", in which the author tried to find an explanation, was widely read. He reasoned that China has introduced the concept of a market economy from the west but failed to import the corresponding ethics, while the traditional moral principles of China no longer fit the market economy model.

You've read 8 articles in the last four months. More people than ever in Sweden and across Europe, like you, are reading and supporting the Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism. And unlike many news organisations, we made the choice to keep our reporting open for all, regardless of where they live or what they can afford to pay.

Goddamnit Theguardian, stop keeping tabs on me.

Last night on LBC this caller came on from Stoke she claims she hasn't been out of the house since Coronavirus started, she says she has a kitchen stocked up and is making meals from her supplies.

She claims Stoke is surrounded by a railway station and a university with chinese people in it and a hospital.

When Tom asked her what she would do when her food ran out she said she would put a scarf over her mouth and get two pairs of gloves so she could wash one when she got back home.

She also said everyone should stay at home for two weeks and enjoy the time off.

The woman hasn't quite grasped the reality that people can't just stay at home for two weeks.

It's probably because you're a new member. We don't know you and what's humorous to you. Rest assured, there are some real clows here and most of us are not that up tight.

Anyone scrapping plans for holidays abroad this year ?.
I know we are still in the wait and see stage but seems that a single case will end up with
a hotel or cruise ship in quararatine,Dont think too many people will want to take that risk., esp if they have kids.
Also a lot of countries are closing borders and banning flights, would be very easy to get stuck in some foriegn
place.

Im hoping to get a really cheap cruise deal for the summer, literally 80% off the normal price!!

Nah... off to Amsterdam week after next, the Poland for a week and then Berlin (my favourite city)

So, unless the planes not taking off or Glasgow suffers more sickness than it normally has, I’ll still be going.

Knowing my luck I’d just stay at home and the postman would have it anyhow.

Funnily enough Mrs P, has just came in and started going ‘I’m not comfortable going away, hotels with foreigners (she’s right of centre, I’m left of: imagine; foreigners like us abroad!) so entirely possible I’ll be going stag.

Any one who wants to change places and be entertained by an Irish guy, with a limited personality and a Bonanza addiction please send me a PM.

Eh? Who wants to stay in the barren wasteland known as the west of Scotland:p

If I’m going to pop my clogs I’d rather do it somewhere nice and they can just chuck me in the sea rather than fly my body home

Well Mr Smug presenter Jon Snow must be lording it up being the first journalist to be part of a quarantine.

Watch him milk the next two weeks for all it's worth.

Bet Sky, itv and the BBC are furious their journalists didn't get there first, race will be on now to be the first journalist to actually contract it.

He has to be the centre of attention or get some free pr for the ailing C4, which apparently boris is considering flogging, yes if people didn't realise channel 4 is owned by the british govt :eek2: unbelievable considering some of the perversive/permissive content they've been peddling over the years.

I suppose he might have corona in which case it is right to isolate himself for two weeks or so, a benefit to viewers if he's kept off air, I must admit I didn't mind him so much years ago but as identity politics and wokeness has increased he's got more intolerable, pushing this agenda above everything else.

Japan and former IOC chairman Dick Pound (and that is his real name) are at odds over whether Olympics will go ahead.

Pound says:
a decision on July's event would have to be made within three months.

"You could certainly go to two months out if you had to.

Japan's govt spokesman said "The IOC is proceeding with preparations toward the games as scheduled,"
