Chris Christie headed to veto online gambling bill!

So help me out here, I don't get this at all.

Chris Christie supports land based gambling in Atlantic City, also signed a bill to allow sports betting too but his two main concerns with online gambling are the following.

1. He's not sure it will bring new jobs to N.J..

2. He's afraid it will create a new generation of problem gamblers.

Sure it will bring jobs to the state and people that want the land based experience will always go. As for his other comment, new generation of problem gamblers. He surely knows that anyone, anywhere can pretty much gamble online now so what's his point?

I was feeling pretty good about him not vetoing the bill but after this interview, looks like a veto might be coming in the next few days, not sure.

Just good old politics as usual - maybe he's a little worried about the feds weighing in on the sports betting litigation launched by the national sports leagues....despite IMEGA assurances that it won't really make a difference to an essentially constitutional issue.

Lesniak says Christie is clueless!

"If he vetoes the bill for those reasons, that has to go down for stupidest reasons to veto a bill ever given,” Lesniak, the leading sponsor of the bill, said Thursday in a phone interview. “More importantly, it would just put another nail in the coffin for any hope of economic recovery and job creation in Atlantic City."

Christie today signed legislation allowing gamblers at the state’s horse racing tracks to place bets using mobile devices such as cell phones.

The bill (A2610) allows people to place bets with handheld devices for races at the track and outside races simulcast at the track. Bets must be placed on the track grounds. A similar bill allowing mobile gaming within Atlantic City casinos was signed into law in August.

I just dont understand how you, a rational person, would try to find sense in irrational behaviour. There seems to be other forces at work so dont waste your time trying to figure this one out.

I got the impression the first time round he just didn't want to be "first". Maybe he has higher aspirations and doesn't want to rock any boats? It is a bit of a hot potato in that gambling does divide opinion.
