I believe your ATM rejections were caused by the routing numbers matching some database that the bank has where checks could be suspect.
A couple of checks I got the ATM wouldn't take them so I brought them into the bank, deposited them, and no problems.
For the OP, 2 months seems like a ridiculous amount of time in this day and age for anything. I would hope the bank causing the hold up would be investigated and possibly sanctioned for dragging their heels.
The way the whole world is connected there should not be any reason these transactions should take more than 1 business day. I can't picture the OP's bank watching their mailbox everyday waiting for the cash to be delivered from the bank the check was drawn on.
I do not understand the ins and outs of the banking world, but like you, I would think that in this day of electronic this and that, that checking to see if a check is good shouldn't take 2 months - even one from Canuckland. However, I am hesitant to take the issue up with the ladies at my local bank as it might draw too much attention. *sigh* It's such a frickin' mess ...

One thing stands out here, that is, the long delays.
