You are right.

The one without the water wheel doesn't have to factor in the cost of the water - hence a better RTP and bonus trigger.

When the water wheel was introduced on the later skins, BTG used a percentage of profits to cover the cost of all that water (Or so they say??).

Now as a direct result of all that water, the mine has flooded and there is a lot of dirt in the area. This is why you are not seeing any GOLD. The version at Sky Vegas was also taken down as a direct result of this and BTG (Big Time Gimmick) will now be introducing a new bonus Trigger to fall in line with what you are finding... look out for the letters D I R T when the slot goes live again.
