Monzo did this once and they had an immediate 70% decline in gambling transactions, but Barclays becomes the first banking app to block gambling transactions if activated by the account holder. Not just those, but other groups or spending can be blocked too. Doesn't work for credit cards yet but this is in the pipeline.

Fair play to Barclays for doing this. I think it’s a useful tool to help you stop spending if you have a gambling problem.

This could be particularly useful for gamblers who use their debit card in high street bookmakers.

Pretty poor to be honest. Takes one second to switch on and one second to turn off again via the app. Customer service said if you have a gambling problem you can uninstall the app afterwards. Yeah and how long does it take to install again :p

You can also block porn transactions, premium-rate sex lines (do they still exist!) and petrol stations

The bastards! What am I to do when there's a queue at the pumps?

Some screenshots... very basic :)

It may not be foolproof just yet but if Barclays and others can iron out any kinks, it'll be the most powerful RG tool out there, and something the casinos will wish had never been devised to be fair

The only way for that to happen is if the Banks make it impossible to to lift the restrictions and I can tell you; the minute Banks start dictating what and what not a customer can spend thier own money (Regardless if the customer initiated it) on is the day they crumble and people switch to Crypto or holding on to cold hard cash. There's no way they can implement a Responsible Gaming app or platform without giving the customer an opt in or out of any time they want because people will be leaving the bank in droves ;)

I think this is a very dangerous route. At what point in the future do government have full control over this and tell banks what customers can & can't do with thier own money? We've already seen the totalitarian porn block the UK have in place.

I disagree. It's a natural evolution. You can't just not do things just in case a government uses it in the wrong way...

You could have the same argument about pretty much anything. I'd be all for that button having a "for how long?" next to it and a drop down box with some options. And then not being able to reverse it until after that period is up.

I completley understand you. The best way to have this implemeted moving forward would be to have the self exclusion method of "How long?". But my point stands about government interference at any time they feel like it. I'm pretty certain no one in their right mind allow this to occur without giving fierce opposition. Of course I'm being utterly hypothetical and it may never occur, but it's entirely possible.
