Aussie Woman loses $8m playing online casinos

I just can't wrap my head around spending that much money online. You are either spending 24/7 online or you are wagering $100s at a time.

It doesn't surprise me that the casino never questioned the player. She was a whale of a whale and a cash cow for the casino.

I believe these tragic stories should always be given publicity to (a) remind other at risk gamblers of the dangers of too much of a good thing and (b) to flag the addicted gambler so that other operators can bar them for their own good.

In an online sense, at $8 million this must be one of the biggest problem gambler rip-offs yet, although the article does say that it was not just gambling that the accused blew the cash on.

There have been two or three big-money online cases in the UK recently in which an employee in a trusted position but suffering from a gambling problem has ripped off his/her employer, but nothing in this league as far as I am aware.

The story mentions that at one point she won $1M, but gambled it back due to a limit of $20K every 4 days. Wonder how far in the hole she was at that point?

I don't think a limit of 20K every 4 days would put me off a casino, I play casinos with much lower weekly limits.

Should I ever be so lucky, I hope my CM friends would help keep me on the straight and narrow!

Wasn't 21Nova that William Hill Online operation that was involved in a brand/trademark dispute with 32Red, which it lost in the UK courts, 'persuading' it to change its branding?

Yes!

From wikipedia:

In October 2010 32Red's dispute with William Hill over the use of 32Vegas reached the High Court of Justice in London where a six day trial took place over the matter. 32Red objected to Hill's use of the 32Vegas brand (which was renamed 21Nova subsequent to 32Red instigating legal proceedings). Handing down Judgment in January 2011, Mr Justice Henderson ruled that William Hill had infringed the 32Red trade mark and that their counterclaims against the validity of 32Red's trade marks (32 and 32Red) were dismissed.[3]

That is just crazy O.o.. How in the heck casino did not required some kind of verification where all that money came from.

Now we know where they got the money to pay their lawyers. ;)

So what kind of business doesn't notice that kind of money missing until it's in the millions? There was a case awhile back here where some woman was embezzling from her workplace too - she got busted when it was just over $100K

I know addicts are addicts and will play and lose insanely, but why do so many of them (who make the news and forums anyway) seem to dump so much money into 'iffy' joints? I mean, if you're pissing away insane amounts of dough at least play where there's no max cash out per week/month and you get some good comps for your time and (employer's) money.

Because casinos with good comps and no weekly/monthly max cashouts would have stopped this insanity long before it came to the news. ;)

This is the funniest part:

"Jobson told police she tried to win back her losses which she logged in a notebook so she could replace the money and would not be found out.

"One time I won $1 million," she said.

"But they only paid you $20,000 every four days, so you can imagine sitting there waiting for the money to come back, and it's not coming, so you would keep gambling because why not? It's there. And I'd lose it." "

Losing 8 millions at online casino and then, when winning some small part back- getting paid in increments -20000 at a time. Ouh those greedy casinos!

The plea hearing continues.

Jesus H Christ. How on earth they couldn't lift that ridiculous limit for an obvious high-roller (regardless of where the funds came from) beggars belief.

This quoted text should be chiselled into stone and placed on the banner area of this site:

'Don't ever listen to excuses for 'pending periods' from any casino - this is the sole and absolute reason.'

Sad woman, big jail term coming, has lost her future and all to play one of the crappiest slots invented.

Is there a chance the Casino could be charged with "receiving" the stolen money, they don't seem to have done any due diligence to verify the money was hers to spend?

Oh my goodness at that! That is the most Dumb and Dumberer I have ever heard of! Steal $7.8m and spend on pokies in 5 years space. Is she insane? Yes! Does she knows what money really mean? Does she understand how to manage money? None! She is very dangerous woman stealing other people money and use it on pokie so casino earn a big hefty $7.8m just from one lady. I bet casino would be exciting but unfortunately it gonna be changing story because once police finds out those were stolen money. Casino must hand over the $7.8m back to the police or else they face a very serious consequence. So really, it is very very very stupid to do that. She is ultimately the most responsible for what she has done as a serious crime. She must be punished and pay her jail time. She need to realise that is absof...lutely crazy! For me. I have been very tight with money and I can only put budget aside if I feel like to gamble for fun, once a bit of it run out, then its over for next time. Unbelievable!

I don't want to sound mean but there have been some outrageous acts done by people who don't like the way they look The casino simply got a windfall that could keep them operating for a long time. I feel for the employer though I am at a loss as to how this woman could get access to all these funds. Surely sums reaching 6-digit figures would arouse attention.

I think there is no chance casino will repay that money. And I don't think they should. What if this was money's owner who lost all that money and just used this woman to get the lost money back claiming the money was actually stolen? It could all be planned before he started playing using her name. You never know. So if any casino will pay the money back in the cases like these- it will go bankrupt very soon.
