Anyone here who drinks Fizzy Soft Drinks? Read this!

Does anyone else on here drink fizzy soft drinks? Have any of you noticed the change over the years? I have consumed fizzy soft drinks since the 1970s but cannot drink most of the stuff made today. Why? Because of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame & saccharin. Not only do these 2 things taste disgusting, they are NOT natural & are really bad for you. (See video)

Now I do agree with the fact some people have the need to avoid sugar. That is where sugar free or diet drinks come in. At least people that WANT to avoid sugar have a choice. My problem is I want to avoid artificial sweeteners but I am NOT being given the choice. Why is this filth being added to a juice that I am expected to drink? No way.

If you doubt in any way what I am saying, try this. Walk into any branch of Mc Donalds and order a Fanta Orange. Now go to a kiosk or corner shop & buy a can of UK Orange Fanta. Then do the taste test & you will instantly see what I mean. It is important to sample the Mc Donalds Fanta first, as the disgusting chemicals in the can will adversely affect your taste buds. (Mc Donalds being an American company does NOT use sweeteners in its non diet drinks)

Up until 1997 the drink I enjoyed most was Fanta Icy Lemon. This was one of the last drinks to be ruined. If you have any doubts whatsoever, just check out the ingredients of the 2 versions below. This is now one of the WORST tasting drinks I know of.

Fanta Icy Lemon ingredients UP TO 1997.

1. Carbonated Water

2. Sugar

3. Lemon Juice (concentrated) 6%

4. Citric Acid

5. Stabilisers - Acacia Gum, (E445)

6. Preservative (E211)

7. Antioxidant - Ascorbic Acid

8. Flavourings + Colour (E104)

OK, There are 3 "E" numbers in there, but I would much rather have that than this :

Fanta Icy Lemon ingredients AFTER 1997.

1. Carbonated Water

2. Sugar (from Beet & cane)

3. Lemon Juice (concentrated) 5%

4. Citric Acid

5. Stabilisers - Acacia Gum, Esters Of Wood Rosins

6. Preservative - Potassium Sorbate

7. Antioxidant - Ascorbic Acid

8. Sweeteners - Acesulfame K , Aspartame , Sodium Saccharin

9. Flavourings

10. Contains a source of Phenylalanine

I am feeling sick just typing the names of these things, never mind drinking them! I will NEVER buy this drink (or any other drink with sweeteners) ever again. Please watch video below & comment.....

I am so disgusted by this I will be posting this to other forums as well as this one.

well, we call it 'pop' here, but to be fair, there was NEVER anything natural about sodas. It is and always has been, garbage, pure and simple. If you want natural, drink water. It always is, always will be detrimental. There are zero health benefits to soda. It rots teeth, strips enamel, and as for aspartame? It's an ongoing debate with no consensus. Think cigarettes: we know it's bad, but we opt to partake or not anyway.

I agree - I cannot drink things that are artificially sweetened, they taste vile to me, and those that wish to cut down on sugar intake should indeed have the diet option available, just as those who do not , should be able to have one with sugar.

Another example of this (again, UK - sorry to be exclusionary) is Volvic Touch of Fruit, which is a mineral water drink infused with fruit flavours, several different flavours to chose from. The fruit splash contains sugar but made the drink very tasty indeed. A few years ago suddenly they did away with this and replaced the whole range with a 'sugar free' version, sweetened with artificial chemicals. It was so awful and they must have received so many complaints/sale drops that the original version is now back alongside it, with the sugar-free version only for who those who wish to have it. It is/was one of my staple drinks so it was awful when that happened and I'm very glad they had a re-think.

I am wishing to cut down a bit as part of weight loss, so am limiting myself to 1-2 cans a week of full-sugar drinks now at the weekend only, but I'd rather have 1 can a week of a proper one, than 1000 cans a week of something sugar-free!

Glad someone at least agrees! All I am asking for is the choice....

Here is my solution for this problem:

(1) Get a bottle of 100% pure juice with no added ingredients.

(2) Get a bottle of pure carbonated water with no added ingredients.

(3) Mix around 30% juice with 70% carbonated water.

Result: Instant yummy fizzy drinks, 100% healthy with nothing but juice and water.

I have a big supply of different juices and mix different ones each day, endless variety and tastes great. I also experimented with all the brands of carbonated water and settled with Seltzer brand because it has a higher concentration of bubbles than most brands, I like to have a lot of bubbles :)

I thought Fizzys went out with the 60s :p

We have a no-soda policy at home - but we drink carbonated drinks. As mentioned above, there are healthier choices one can make. A typical drink in Germany is "Apfelschorle" - a combination of apple juice and sparkling mineral water. This also works well with grape and other berry juices. Drink an ice cold glass of this on hot summer day and you'll never want to drink a soda again.

Edited to add: I've read somewhere that what is addictive about soda drinks is not the content (sugar, caffeine, or other crap), it's the fizzy feeling on the back of the tongue. So an Apfelschorle is a great substitute for a Coke or "fizzy". The report is probably somewhere on the Internet.

I've never really liked soda, even when I was a kid, so can't really comment on that. But I agree that most things that are artificially flavored or sweetened taste strange and chemically to me too. A lot of people say that stuff sweetened with splenda tastes a lot more realistic, but I haven't tried it - mostly because anything made with splenda seems more expensive!

A quick aside though, did you guys ever do that thing in school where you leave a nail in a glass of coke?

That is a good solution for when at home, but I struggle to find any drinkable fizzy drinks when away from home. I do also enjoy cartons of fruit juice as well as fizzy drinks, but I never drink either tea or coffee (unless iced coffee).
