Alcohol, Marijuana Linked to Online Gambling

Gambling over the Internet is a common practice and with the spread of smart phones, an individual can gamble in practically any setting.

New research looks to see if individuals who gamble online are more prone to risky behaviors than those who gamble offline.

Researchers from Concordia University compared people who gamble offline only to people who also gamble online in an effort to answer this question.

In the study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, Sylvia Kairouz, Ph.D., discovered that alcohol and marijuana (cannabis) use are associated with online users.

“There has been growing concern with the rise in online gambling and how this affects the health of our public,” said Kairouz.

“The number of gambling sites around the globe have grown from about 15 in 1995 to 2,358 in 2010 and global Internet gambling revenues increased from $3 billion to $24 billion between 2000 and 2010.”

Sounds like a rather silly 'study' on the face of it.

I do both... gamble at a B&M (when I can) and (used to) gamble online. Haven't had a toke in 35+ years and rarely drink. But like Blonde... I do love my ciggies when playing slots (wherever I am)...

At times I like a drink playing but I also like to play knowing what I am doing too.
The only good smoke I do in a casino is a good cigar(That's if I have someone next to me that's a jerk)
& they move fast after I blow the smoke towards my machine & it hits them in the face lol.

So you can still smoke in your casinos over there?
In Sweden there isn't a public place you can light a cigarette anymore.
Why do you think I stay at home?:D

Don't drink at all almost and have never tried smoking anything but cigarettes (not even a cigar)
But I have seen some strange postings here late at night by people inhaling or drinking some stuff, so I think it might be a related problem yes;)

I play online because I can smoke cigarettes while I play! Plus the rtp is better!
Everywhere here on Oz has banned smoking everywhere! You have to wait for free spins then race outside and have a smoke!
Not a problem now though coz I can smoke when I play online!

Cheers

I think I'm gonna quit smoking cigarettes and start drinking and doing "recreational" drugs" :D There's no fine for drinking and the fine to light up a joint in a public place is only $50 whereas it's $150 to light up a cigarette, and I can always say the joint is for medicinal purposes lmao.

I think this is an interesting study. As somebody who has struggled with substance abuse I can see the relationship not only between gambling online and marijuana/alcohol but gambling in general, I personally believe this is obvious. From the age of twenty to thirty I drank (not always heavily) almost everyday and probably smoked weed anywhere between 3-10 times everyday, unless I didn't have it, which was very rare. On top of that I was a nicotine addict since the age of 18, tobacco and cigarettes. I am now almost 37 and have not so much as touched the above in almost 7 years. I made the commitment to quit one night and didn't look back.

Online gambling started about 3.5 years ago and I would be in denial if I told you I couldn't see and feel the correlation. Now gambling fascinates and entertains me but it doesn't consume me like the above, I simply can feel the resurrection of that same "thing" that made me disposed to my past problems. I recognize the ability of gambling to be a severe enemy of mine if I don't respect it soberly and understand what it can potentially do to a person.

Internet gambling, like marijuana/alcohol, IMHO allows folks like myself who tend to be on the introverted side to be by themselves and get that elated endorphin rush with nobody else around. I have won a substantial amount of $$$ gambling online but have never set foot in a B@M casino, I think my concentration would be all flustered because of the element of the crowd. It makes sense to me, the introverted person, gambling by yourself, marijuana/alcohol abuse- I can definitely see the correlation.

They seem to link everything to gambling.
I dont gamble because of drinking/smoking whatever I gamble because I want to
I like it ,its my thing and Its up to me how I keep it under control.
I think when we have problems to often we to find another reason to blame it on!
whatever it may.
Theres people who max there cards out shopping, some spend more than some gamblers, what lets go blame it on to many stores?
