page posted by Balthazar (I was aware of it from long ago) shows how much of a real pain it would be to code this into the game.

I understand that going from no auto-hold to premium strategy is a big step, but if there's already an auto-hold coded into the game (ie: MGS), why not make it right?

And, another part of the truth - running that code for every deal hand in all of the video poker games that we serve up would consume a lot of server CPU cycles

On a standalone software like MGS, I'd assume that it can be done locally.

I have a vague memory of an earlier thread/post about some software that provided "optimal strategy guides" within their help system for various versions of Blackjack . Someone then pointed out that the strategy provided was not "optimal".

Given the easy availability of accurate BJ guides at the WizardOfOdds and other places, it would be stretching "benefit of the doubt" to the breaking point to assign these faulty Blackjack guides to "human error" in documentation.

Given the difficulty which I mentioned in properly programming a truly accurate "auto hold" for JOB, I would find it easy to assign the source of improper hold instructions to programming error.

However, the bottom line is really the same as with the faulty BJ strategy guides - the instructions provided to the Player are wrong.

Trust me when I tell you that you might be looking at 3,000 lines of very tricky and very demanding programming here.
I think it is easier to have something like the winpoker hand analyzer which calculates the expected value of the hand for each of the possible combination of cards held. It does not require knowledge of the global optimal strategy and it can be adapted easily to different rules or different paytables. There was a time when MG video poker had such a thing built into it, but it is not there any more.

I'm a bit confused here, on the Wizard of Odds strategy page, it lists: 14.Unsuited TJQK(0.8723) and then further down 24.Unsuited JQK (0.5005). How is this an error in the MG autoplay?

ZAP is right.

You would hold the 10, j,q,k...not the j,q,k. You have an opened ended straight and much better return then throwing the 10 away. The auto hold is right!

What constitutes "

If you're playing your own holds then I'd recommend Galewind VPs at the Pinnacle casino. (If you're just playing for fun just launch the demo casino from Galewind's own site.)

Well thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately as an American those options are not available to me. Prior to 2006 at I would use auto-hold at MG Casinos occasionally but I knew some of the play decisions were wrong and almost never used auto PLAY. Whats the point really--with auto play or even auto hold for that matter. If you want your game to mindless then slots is probably the better choice.

Chopley, the who Random Number topic is incredibly deep. What is random--TRULY RANDOM? There is much debate about this topic among mathematics professionals.

I understand were Mr. Paymar is coming from and I of course as you said the machine must be truly random and honest in order for correct play strategies to deliver. I'm confident that the current technology used in US Casinos (with perhaps the exception of some Indian Casinos) is as close to honestly random as possible.

The thing about is that I doubt very few people--myself included--will ever play enough hands of Video Poker or Blackjack to place us in to firm long-term status over the course of a lifetime. And it is genuinely impossible that ANYONE will ever be able play enough hands in a single session online or say a week long trip to Las Vegas.

So, if you play these games it is crucial to have strong knowledge of the correct playing strategies, however, it is perhaps MORE important understand that in reality, that is the short term--that ANYTHING can happen.
