Now that Valentine's day is pretty much over is it safe for me to point out that it's really the silliest celebration of the year?

It's really just a commercial event created and designed specifically to sell cards, flowers and chocolate.

Now I'm not saying not to be romantic. By all means buy the flowers and candy but why wait until you're told when to do it? Don't get fooled into buying all these boxes of candy in "Valentine's day" shaped boxes for twice the price just because you're supposed to. The stores and manufacturers love it. Take the same candy, put it in a special box and either sell them for twice as much or sell 10 times the quantity to people who will hand it off to someone who will in turn probably appreciate it less than any other day of the year.

I'm generalizing of course. The first year or so in a relationship there's the want to impress your newish mate with how fantastically romantic you can really be. Of course a half dozen years later or so it's more a matter of "Here's your candy." - "Aww, thanks..... Did you get the mail while you were out?"

In fact I think Valentine's day is the least romantic day of the year. It's the day everyone knows they're getting some flowery gift. It's fully expected. Take that same bouquet of flowers you gave on the 14th of February and randomly hand them to her on the 14th of April or May and see how much more they're appreciated. Do it for no reason other than the fact that you saw some flowers and wanted to buy them for her. That's thoughtful. Plan your surprise candle light dinner on the 12th of June. That's romantic.

Valentines day is just another day you're expected to do stuff and what makes it worse is you're not even really celebrating anything.... Except maybe the one time of the year you can buy pretty much any candy in heart shaped boxes.

Now you may agree with me and you might disagree with me but either way, do yourself a favour and do NOT ignore Valentine's day. As unromantic as it is, it is vitally important that you acknowledge it.

Trust me. You can buy her a ring on November 14th, a car on December 14th, a house on January 14th but if you give her nothing on February 14th you suck. Just acknowledge the day when it comes as you're supposed to and move on.

And when the day is gone and the behaviour is no longer expected, when the heart shaped, over priced boxes are gone off the shelves, sometime mid week when you both got those hump day blahs, bring home some flowers, light some candles and be really romantic.... Just cause you wanna. ;)

You see how quickly that day went from "Be romantic" to "Need.... chocolate..."
