Why does the debt sometimes decrease?

The Public Debt Outstanding decreases when there are more redemptions of Treasury securities than there are issues.

How do you make a contribution to reduce the debt?

There are two ways for you to make a contribution to reduce the debt:
•You can make a contribution online either by credit card, checking or savings account at Pay.gov
•You can write a check payable to the Bureau of the Public Debt, and in the memo section, notate that it's a Gift to reduce the Debt Held by the Public. Mail your check to:

Attn Dept G
Bureau of the Public Debt
P. O. Box 2188

Erm.....eh?

What does "THERE (they're? their?) on street corner drugs" have to do with the article, besides the fact the sentence makes no sense at all?

I'm totally lost.

Perhaps Rocky feels that the people out on the street corners should gift the government instead. Surely he didn't feel the citizens contributing such funds were on drugs? I've always suspected some drugs might improve policians.

It's long been possible for US citizens to send a gift to reduce the debt. The linked article shows amount contributed since 1996.

Whether it counts as a charitable contribution, I don't know.

Seems if you'd like the Government to have a gift to do whatever they like with, you can donate to:

How do I make a contribution to the U.S. government?
Citizens who wish to make a general donation to the U.S. government may send contributions to a specific account called "Gifts to the United States." This account was established in 1843 to accept gifts, such as bequests, from individuals wishing to express their patriotism to the United States. Money deposited into this account is for general use by the federal government and can be available for budget needs. These contributions are considered an unconditional gift to the government. Financial gifts can be made by check or money order payable to the United States Treasury and mailed to the address below.

Gifts to the United States
U.S. Department of the Treasury
Credit Accounting Branch
3700 East-West Highway, Room 622D
Hyattsville, MD 20782

Canadians wishing to donate to reducting the debt are able to claim a charitable tax credit and will be issued a receipt:

Gifts to Canada, a province, or a territory
You can claim a tax credit based on the eligible amount of gifts to the Government of Canada, a province, or a territory. Government gifts do not include contributions to political parties.
If the gifts were agreed to in writing before February 19, 1997, the amount that qualifies for the tax credit is not limited to 75% of your net income for the year. Enter the eligible amount of these gifts on line 342 of Schedule 9, Donations and Gifts. In all other cases, the amount that qualifies for the tax credit is limited to 75% of your net income. Enter the eligible amount on line 1 of Schedule 9.
Gifts to Canada include monetary gifts made directly to the federal Debt Servicing and Reduction Account. If you made such a gift, which will be used only to service the public debt, you should have been provided with a tax receipt for the gift. To make a gift to this account, which should be made payable to the Receiver General, send it, along with a note asking that we apply it to this account, to:
Place du Portage, Phase III, 11 Laurier Street, Gatineau QC, K1A 0S5.

some drugs hu :D

I think most of us have been online long enough to understand posts with grammatical or simple spelling mistakes.

Spell check is helpful unless you type "ther" instead of "their" and it decides you wanted to say "there."

I just did a spell check, it actually thinks I wanted to type "thee." I'm not sure what the method is to chose the best word to replace my mistake with but I'm pretty sure most people do NOT want to type "thee."

Unless I was writing a medieval tale and a knight pulled his sword and proclaimed "Have at there!!" Then maybe I wanted "thee."

Anyway, I understood the post and the title and even though I went on a bit of a ramble that was completely off topic I did intend to answer it eventually.

I think it's silly for the Canadian or US government to tax the hell out of us 9 ways to Sunday and then ask us for donations and gifts because they're still in the hole.

They should be sending us gifts. I could use a gas card.

Agreed, there are limits to what a spell-checker is capable of, it will not correct `They`re - Relating to those`, `Their - Belonging to them`, `There - In or at that place`. These are the most common mistakes.

They`re taking their drugs over there, there we go lol.
