Concerns over new French laws which ban online gaming to be advertised in France led race organizers to ask Unibet to wear “neutral” jerseys in a recent pro cycling event. While Team Unibet’s lawyer maintains that the advertising ban violates European law, Paris-Nice organizers excluded Unibet and a second team on the grounds they wish to keep the event open to just 18 teams.
Ironically, information has come to light that Tour de France and Paris-Nice organizer ASO asked Mr. Bookmaker, Unibet’s former sponsor and also an online gambling company, to sponsor the Paris-Nice event in 2004.
