More "sovereignty" problems for Ladbrokes - it's Germany this time...

British bookies Ladbrokes reacted angrily after being forced to close its German language website and deny German citizens access to its sportbook and casino sites. The move is a result of legal action taken by Westdeutsche Lotterie to prohibit Ladbrokes from accepting wagers from German residents - a ruling, the bookmakers feel, to be wrong.

(We) believe that being forced to refuse bets from residents of a member state of the European Union is a clear breach of European law and we will continue our efforts to have this reversed, a spokesman said. Recent events in the European High Court would suggest they have a case. Last month it ruled in favour of Stanleybet after the Italian government tried to ban them from collecting bets from Italian punters in the Gambelli case.

Meanwhile, after taking their German site offline on Wednesday, the people at Ladbrokes are left to seethe at the injustice. They assure their customers, however, that any chips they have in their accounts will be honoured and add that they, wish to thank them for their custom over the last 18 months and for the overwhelming support we have received for our struggle to overcome legal issues in Germany. The battle goes on.
