When I cashed out at the local grocery store the cashier wished me a happy holidays. I replied "Have a Merry Christmas" and she perked up and said "you too!". I'm sorry if it is politically correct, but I celebrate Christmas s do most Americans. I don't even consider it a devout religious holiday anymore, I consider it a time of bringing joy into the lives of your family and friends.

I wished someone a Merry Christmas the other day and they replied "I'm Jewish actually, but have a great Christmas!". I kindly replied "Thanks, have a great holiday season!". I think there is a very, VERY slim amount of people who will be offended if you wish them Merry Christmas when they do not celebrate it. It's time to stop worrying about stepping on people's toes, I'm not going to take away from my Christmas season because of it.

Have a very Merry Christmas!

This reminds me of something I heard recently during a local radio fundraiser. A young Jewish girl - maybe 7 or 8 years old - was delivering her donation to the host and said "I put money in my sadaka bag every week to help buy Christmas and Hanukkah gifts for other children." I thought this was quite mature and respectful to both Christians and Jews.

Last year @ my first grader's Christmas show - They sang we wish you happy holidays - come on the song is we wish you a Merry Christmas - there were a lot of angry people, The school said they couldnt sing it that way because of new school policy. I know we are supose to live in the land where we have freedom of religion and I respect everyones own choices. I just wish they wouldn't try so hard to push out God from everything..

At my kids' school, there are people from all over the world, of many different religions. During the X'mas concert, sang all sorts of Christmas music, the great majority of it from hymns ('O Come All Ye Faithful' for example).

Not one complaint - and everyone took part.

Had the school tried to sanitize Christmas, they would've lost a lot of students.

Funnily enough, though, the PTG tries to sanitize the food sold in the canteen... to the point where two canteen operators already quit the business. Unfortunately, this is the work of a few minority parents... and the other parents can't be bothered to intervene...

As long as noone is forced to participate, the old maxim "When in Rome....do as the Romans do" should be applicable in this sort of situation imo.

No one is denying immigrants the right to retain their own cultures in the privacy of their homes and communities, or to set up their own schools if they're not happy with the status quo, but if they choose to transplant themselves into a new environment and benefit from it, they should be prepared to make every effort to become a part of it in a public sense.

In the more democratic countries like the USA and the UK they at least have the right to do that, which is probably more than can be said for the less tolerant places from which some of them may have come.

I am a non-Christian that happily embraces the holidays. I tend to wish people Happy HoHo, but don't feel offended if someone wishes me Merry Christmas. I celebrate Chinese New Year, despite not being Chinese.

When my daughter was younger, her school did away with a Xmas concert, which I thought was a damn shame. There are lots of non denominational songs, and I believe Santa Claus has long ago lost any religious significance. The did have a very nice production in January though, and it was kind of nice not to have one more thing to cram into a busy season.

Whatever your beliefs, it is hard to go wrong with "Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards Men". Please, no hard-core feminist language police:D.

Growing up we had the Chaunukah lights (menorah sp) next to our christmas tree :)

The govt wants to be PC and they say separate religion from the justice system yet when you walk in a court room there is "in god we trust" and you have to swear on a bible????

They are going to far with this merry christmas stuff. I wonder what their gonna do to Easter

I'm not sure what happens in the States, but in other Western countries the witness can choose to swear an oath to tell the truth other than on the Bible - the important thing is that the witness makes a commitment to tell the truth.

The presence of a Bible in US courts is at the pleasure of the presiding judge although you are only required to raise your right hand and give affirmation that you will tell the truth. Interestingly, use of the Bible is also not required for the president to be sworn into office.

THIS IS HUMOR SO LIGHTEN UP:)

I totally agree CasinoKidd it's "Merry Christmas", not this Happy Holidays BS...BUT Merry Christmas, that's the holiday just like "Thanksgiving", you don't say Happy Turkey...it's called Thanksgiving just like Halloween is called Halloween and Easter is called Easter...I also don't like it when folks take the word "Christ" out of Christmas and substitute an "X" either as in Xmas. Would there even be a "Christmas" if it were not the birthday of "Christ" ?

It didn't get named Xmas, it got named "Christmas" so much for my non politically correct opinion here but it is mine and I would not be true to myself if I said anything else as I am sure my buddy Nash would also not be true to his thoughts and beliefs if he said he agreed with me ! :)

The abbreviation Xmas is very old, coming from the greek letter "Chi", which is similar to an "X" when written. It can be found as far back as 1551 in the Oxford English dictionary, and some sources cite its use as early as 100AD. Early translations of the New Testament, labourously copied by hand before modern printing methods, used this abbreviation, as well as X (Christos) and Xian for Christian.

The Emperor Constantine, before his conversion to Christianity, is said to have had a dream or vision of the letters Chi and Rho intertwined, the abbreviation for Christ Saviour.

Merry Christmas

I work in retail and was told by the co. that I work for the Merry Christmas must be replaced with Happy Holidays or some other generic saying. I lost my 22 yr. old son 2 years ago and have no Christmas spirit anyway so I just say have a nice day. Nobody ever gets offended with that.

Rabbit, I am sorry for your loss. Holidays can be tough for many folks, and most of us are celebrating without some of our loved ones from past Christmasses.

On a lighter note, the fella, Tim, that used to drive the casino shuttle would tell clerks who said "Have a nice day" "Don't tell me what to do

Thank you,
I have had people tell me this before. Always reply that somebody has to tell them might as well be me. lol

In no way whatsoever do I disagree. In fact as I would post, reform Judaism teaches the tolerance and respect of all religions.

Most Jews are not blind to the fact that we live in a Christain world and are in the minority. I have no clue where the Happy Holidays deal even started but as long as one respects my religion and vice versa on my part, then Merry Christmas,Happy Holidays,Felize Navidad never even crossed my mind as being offensive.

I am as diversified as they come having attended an all guys, no African American (at the time) high school that was maybe 1 to 2 percent Jewish with the blueblood money families like the billionaire Frist family et al. Ironically, a Jew named Tom Schulman would write the script for the movie "Dead Poet's Society" which is really based on his experience at the same high school I attended although it is hard to know it is actually about a all guy's college prep school in the South. I bet Wiki mentions though. Kinda like the movie Driving Miss Daisy (great flick) which iirc Atlanta was the town in the movie but the Werthan family is actually a Nashvegas Jewish family.

My beliefs should not affect your beliefs nor should your beliefs affect my beliefs and respect and tolerance of each other's beliefs is what I was taught. Being a minority I do not even expect that but do I approve of the President of Iran???, absolutely not. Did I approve of the propagandist anti-semite on this forum???, nope. Did or maybe better said did/does it surprise me, nope, That comes with the territory but if the intent is disrespect et al then never underestimate your opponent. Big difference between intent to disrespect and the 2 million times especially in the construction industry that someone said "Jew down" to moi whether it was a Sub., a Realtor, a Buyer, etc. It was always a passing comment and of no offense to me as long as there was no intent to disrespect. Usually one just being ignorant and not educated to the fact that some may find it offensive.

That said, Merry Christmas,Happy Holidays,Felize Navidad, Bonjour Madame, oh did I forget Bonjour Madame:):)

Yes there would be.

Most of the mid-winter religious celebrations Christians, Jews and Muslims honor and celebrate date back thousands of years BEFORE Christ was born.

let's not overthink things too much. "happy holidays" is a perfectly acceptable term to well wish someone. whatever your belief may be, someone taking the time to wish you well should be embraced no matter how it is spoken. i was raised catholic, so "merry christamas" is the norm, but am never offended by anything else. the only thing i do not like is when someone writes "merry x-mas". i dont think you should take the"christ" out of "christmas" but, again, i know it is not usually done on purpose and never mention it. times have changed. when i was in school it was all caucasian, all catholic. we did as we pleased. i do not have a problem with trying to accomodate all. we catholics cannot fall back on our religious beliefs at christmas because we dont agree with others. the other 51 weeks a year, we live in sin, seems ok but dont wish me "happy holidays." lol. lighten up folks and enjoy the holiday no matter how or whatever one you may celebrate.:)

response to rob...i agree that the birth of christ should be the focus of our holiday and is the reason we celebrate. i happen to think the holiday season has become nothing more than a commercial, retail, entity with a life and reason of its own but that is for another time....:)
