Should the US produce the pictures of a dead bin Laden?

I say no - it's not needed since he's dead. People saw him dead. His daughter (and wife) witnessed it. Besides, photos of his blown up head would probably infuriate all of his whacko supporters just like cartoons of Mohamed freak them out.

Any terrorist worth his salt would go to extreme limits to disgrace his adversaries. So if bin laden were alive, he should pop up real soon to show the world the the US is a bold face liar.

But me thinks this won't be happening anytime soon. He can't pop up anywhere, because he's dead. We don't need any photos to prove this.

A photo will not provide proof, especially if he can't be recognised. What is needed is independent scientific proof that the corpse's DNA matches that of Bin Laden. This could be done by taking samples from any captured family members, or even seeking the cooperation of his other family members.

The previous photo released to prove his death under the Bush administration was shown to be fake, and many will say THIS photo has been faked too, and that his head was deliberately mutilated after death in order to prevent the photo from being checked against other known images.

I suspect Obama believes that issuing the photo will be interpreted as the US bragging about his assassination, and this would inflame tensions even further. The terrorists also openly brag about their exploits, and do so in order to amplify their effect, and drum up further support from those who see them as heroes.

I want to see the photos, you can call it twisted personal satisifaction. ;)

But I REALLY want to see the VIDEO!

They taped every second... every one of those Seal's had a camera running, I want to see that video. Thats the real Beef, at least for me.

I thought I read an AP article which stated they had used DNA to verify it was him. The terrorist world doesn't need any further encouragement, which I think showing a picture would do.

The sad part is, the people who live in these countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, etc) they know no different way of life. They live with buildings exploding, gun fire, and innocents slain on a daily basis.

We need to be thankful, and I think at times we take for granted, what other parts of the world (cultures) endure on a day to day level. Women are treated with respect (most times) and aren't used as provisions for future terrorists. We know our children won't be taken away to be trained as human bombs.

Personally, I don't think terrorism will ever disappear, but maybe the people who live in these countries will be able to take a stand and start rebuilding a better life for themselves. There's always hope...

I say NO also. They have done DNA testing, I saw a clip of an interview with Obama that will air on 60 minutes this Sunday, where he stats they did the DNA test.

What good will the picture do? It will only make things worse IMOP. Look what happened when the photos became public at those camps like Guantanamo Bay and the other detention camps.

We won't forget what happened on 9/11, it is embeded in our minds. No picture of a dead Bin Laden is ever going to change it. What really pisses me off, is that the US sends 3 billion dollars to Afghanistan, and you mean to tell me no one knew he was living in one of the largest cities this country has? And, it has been many years the Government is Afghanistan has been saying that he was most likely already dead. Now that he is dead, they are taking the credit. They knew all along where he was, he has been living in this compound for an estimated 6 years. This city he was killed in is mainly made up of miltary personel, active and retired. Do you think this was just a coincidence?

If the pictures become public, it is only going to cause more problems for the American troops that are there fighting. The troops have had enough to deal without any added anger from the citizens of that country.

I don't think that releasing the picture would further enrage Islamic fundamentalists or extremists. The mere fact that Bin laden is touted to have been 'Assassinated' by the US government is cause enough for them to be enraged.

The US released pictures from the White House showing the President and his cronies watching the 'Hit' live. It has become more of a publicity stunt.

Although I sympathise with the American Population for 9/11 and DO NOT condone terrorism, I feel that his assassination is becoming a media circus. Is this really an attempt by Obama to re-popularise himself prior to the election campaign?

In any event... I looked long and hard... I found a pic which WAS NOT Photoshopped.

Evidence of Bin Ladens Death....

Bin laden.webp

Personally, I didn't want to see Saddams final moments, and I don't want to see a picture or video of Osama being killed.

That said, I don't like the secrecy either. At least providing some form of tangible evidence might help silence the conspiracy theorists who say he died 10 years ago, and that the govt didn't announce it then so they could justify the ongoing war expenses or some other political agenda. A handful of eye witness accounts that I've yet to see presented first hand anywhere just does not cut it for me.

From the NY Times 2002 :
Osama bin Laden is dead. The news first came from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the fugitive died in December and was buried in the mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan’s president, Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information. The remnants of Osama’s gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to keep Osama’s ghost alive or because they have no means of communication.

With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have, remained silent for so long if he were still alive. He always liked to take credit even for things he had nothing to do with.

Now where did I leave my tin foil hat.....

I want to see the video, simply because the story keeps changing.

First they report a 30 min fire fight (thats one hell of a fight) and Bin Lauden goes down fighting...

Now we hear only three shots fired and that he was unarmed and his only defense was his wife charging the Seal Team...

I want to see what REALLY happened.

BTW - they don't need to put this stuff on the nightly news, but they do NEED to make it available to those that want to see it.

Also like to add, I don't care if they shot the SOB in cold blood in his sleep...

JUST heard a news flash that the President has decided NOT TO release the photos.

I guess that means we will never see the video either and IMO all these changing stories make this all look suspect...

I've seen at least half a dozen (mis)interpretations or conspiracy theories on this event already, and it's only days later.

Humans are a funny and contrary species, which is what makes life so interesting and at times entertaining.

I don't personally think that anybody's remains should be paraded for the world to see, either on the internet or anywhere else - to me it seems to defile what was once a real person with dignity and aspirations and treat him/her like a slab of soul-less meat - it may be that, but why encourage this macabre trend?

Whilst I'm pleased that Bin Laden at last got his just desserts, and I can definitely understand the desire for vengeance and justice in the US, I would get little satisfaction from looking at a photograph of some probably badly disfigured and bloody body - seen enough of them in real life, thanks.

I honestly doubt that the Obama administration would risk trying to BS the world about this, and I'm certain every precaution will have been taken to verify dental and DNA data, along with a full autopsy and exhaustive pictorial and video evidence....just in case.

The risk of doing otherwise, especially with a presidential election next year is just too great, and there are some folks who will never, ever be satisfied.

I think what Obama is doing is trying to convince the average, reasonable person, because he knows the loonie fringe will remain unconvinced.

I believe on this occasion he has made the right call.

What worries me more are the apparent contradictions in information coming out of the administration and other sources.

Although I am aware of the hazards of misinterpretation when immediate news is pumped out before all the facts and circumstances are to hand and have been assessed, changes to the official story will always dent credibility, generate doubts....and encourage conspiracy theorists.

Twenty minutes after the president announces he won't release the photos and we already have folks filing Freedom of Information papers to force the government to release the photos.

It may be years, but sooner or later those photos will be released.

I don't think that it is the 'reasonable' people that Obama needs to convince. He needs to convince the radical Muslim wackos that Bin Laden is Dead and that we killed him.
And to do that, he has to release the photos and the video.

i so agree with you that its obamas way of doing just that.

love the pic

I voted no, if he is dead he is dead. Mind you i would like to see the video from start to end. Mind you there seems to be many different versions on how he spent his last few moments alive. Another to add to the above, was he was removed from the room and then dragged back in front of his daughter then shot.
Now i would not of allowed this man to of left this world that easily.
First i would of taken out both knee caps, then crotch and as he wept in pain each hand. and left him for dead. As he was screaming in pain, i would remind him this was payback for 911.

In my opinion, there is no need to show the photos at all.
Although the picture could be a proof that he's done, it's not worth the victory if you show it to the whole world, and yet the predecessors are still there, waiting for a chance to strike.

I am not doubting the US Navy SEALS, in fact, I admire their effort, but do you really think he's dead? There are many possible situations that he might have survived, .. Without us knowing the real truth.. We should still be vigilant. That's it. :)

The "bin" of death

Truly there is no need to have any sort of evidence or proof that the wicked witch is dead. If our government has announced and proclaimed the body of this person to be inert as a result of a bullet to the brain area, then what possible reason could we have for doubting the voracity and faithfulness of our great leaders?
He" been" laden, and now he is dead laden, so lets rejoice as he and his cohorts did when the towers were demolished. You dont have to go out in the streets and dance, but a private boog-a-loo and a hearty BOO YAH! would be just super!

Well, even Al Quaida has admitted the bugger is dead, now.

But I'll bet there will still be some who refuse to believe it.

Obama really seems to be milking this story as hard as he can - did you see him and the vice president at Fort Campbell last night....mutual massaging!

Not too surprising I guess. :)

WASHINGTON -- Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the Department of Defense seeking all photographs and/or video recordings of Osama bin Laden taken during and/or after the U.S. military operation in Pakistan that resulted in bin Laden's death.

The request to the Defense Department was filed May 3. An identical request was filed with the CIA.

Under the Freedom of Information Act, the agencies have 20 business days legally to respond.

"President Obama's decision not to release the bin Laden photos is at odds with his promises to make his administration the most transparent in history," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "Judicial Watch hopes its FOIA requests will provide a mechanism to release these records in an orderly fashion in compliance with the FOIA law. President Obama's reluctance to spike the football is not a lawful reason for withholding these historic public documents from the American people. We are prepared to go to court to obtain this information."

well if we cant talk to any eye witness of the killing because pakistan is mad at us [and we subsidize them $$$$] for looking out for our interest

you know it seams to me that a raid that went so easy for them that they might have him on a water board in git mo thats ok with me but just say it

why in the world would they want to give up the chance to sweat the biggest fish of all
that just doesn't make sense

I'm with Jet, I have no personal desire to see photos of his corpse or video of his killing. The diehard conspiracy theorists wouldn't accept that any photo or video that's released wasn't staged anyhow. Diehard conspiracy theorists still deny the moon landing and the holocaust happened, and look at all the pictoral and video evidence of those.

The CIA showed numerous pictures to a group of Senators including dems and republicans who all confirmed they were 100% sure it was Osama and nearly all of them agreed it wouldn't help to release them. Most of them described the pictures as extremely gruesome, and the killing shot as having entered the eye and exited behind the ear or vice versa, so I think that pretty much puts the conspiracy theories to rest.

I agree with the policy of not releasing them, at least in the short term. I think its potentially inflammatory in an already pretty tense environment, and while I don't really give two rats behinds about offending terrorist coward scum, I do care about doing anything can endanger the lives of citizens or a member of the military, so as curious as I am to see it (and the video as well) I'm fine with not seeing them now that we know Osama's blood was DNA tested, and the photos were independently verified and confirmed by a number of senators, since no amount of my personal curiosity is worth endangering lives.

Well said and wouldn't it be nice if all could call it done and move on.

Great to see someone thinking outside the box, if anyone needs some evidence of how Bin Laden`s *ghost* carried on regardless making videos, here`s more proof than you will ever need....

Alternatively watch the video in my signature, as stated on the FBI`s most wanted website `Bin Laden has never been indicted for 9/11 as there is no evidence whatsoever linking him to it`, yet, there was still enough evidence to declare war on two countries a day after :rolleyes::rolleyes:
